(I suspect he's practically the ONLY author that age or older whose works include children's books who lives in Nebraska! To be fair, though, I only found one title that seems to get listed as a juvenile: "Uncle Smoke Stories.")

Another book that can be read to young people, at least, is "Omaha Tribal Myths and Trickster Tales."
He's been a senior correspondent on the Sunday Morning program, CBS News, "Postcards from Nebraska."

...Welsch has had a lifelong fascination with the indigenous tribes of the Northern Plains. He played his first Omaha handgame in 1964, and increasingly became involved with members of the Omaha and Pawnee tribes that lived nearby. He was formally adopted into the Omaha's Wind Clan by tribal elders in 1967. He has also deeded his sixty-acre farm to the Pawnees so that they can return it to a scared burial ground. In short, Welsch is, what he terms an Indian wannabe in his memoir Embracing Fry Bread: Confessions of a Wannabe. An anthropologist and folklorist, Welsch emphasizes that this work is an account of his own experiences and not meant to be a scholarly tract, and uses his unique position as an honorary member to give insights on some of the differences between White and Indian culture, including the trope of "Indian time" as well as stereotypes each community has of the other...
