Has anyone heard of (or have) a copy of an old children's poem
called The Pirate Don Dirk of Dowdee ? The author is unknown but
the piece is from an anthology of children's poetry called A Time
For Poetry from the mid to late '70's.

Thanks !

This is "Pirate Don Durk of Dowdee" by Mildred Plew Meigs, a
much-remembered and reqested old favorite, often from those of us who
loved the old orange Childcraft set. Meigs also wrote "The Giant Joe
Bean" in that volume.

I don't want to reproduce it here since I'm unsure of the copyright on
this, but you'll find the poem at

Thanks Elizabeth !

It's a great poem ! Any idea where I might find the Childcraft
set you mentioned ? Is it a book that I might find at a
bookstore ? I can't seem to find any writings from Mildred Plew
Meigs.

The Childcraft set has gone through many editions, and you should be able
to find a set at through a used bookdealer. I just checked Bookfinder,
http://www.bookfinder.com, and there are many listings of both the set and
individual volumes. I also just checked eBay, and there are also many
listings. This link:
http://cgi.ebay.com/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=330712658, will
take you directly to a nice listing on eBay for the whole set, the funky
orange ones from my childhood, that includes a good photograph and a
description of each volume.

My favorite volume (by far) of the whole series is volume 2, the narrative
poetry, with the two poems by Meigs already mentioned, plus other
memorable poems like "The Potatoes' Dance" by Vachel Lindsay and "A Ballad
of China" by Laura E. Richards (probably better remembered by its first
line, "Her name was Dilliki Dolliki Dinah."

I think I've seen this with Maurice Sendack illustrations somewhere. I
could see the little pirate in his plumage as soon as I started to read!

This has brought back some memories for me. Now I've got that darn poem
floating through my head and can't get rid of it.
