An art teacher in the 1950s and early 1960s, he divides his time between London and southwestern France.
"I began writing when I was a young art teacher, not long returned from war service in Europe. As a student I met a Polish refugee who had studied in Warsaw. He introduced me to the traditional Polish craft of paper cutting and to paper sculpture which, although taught in the Warsaw Academy, was hardly known as a subject in Western Europe."

Alf Gorilla and the Battersea Gang , 1997
"Persecuted by Oily Sludge the wharf cat, the rats of the Battersea Gang release Alf from London Zoo to act as their minder. Batty and his gang of rats need a Minder to protect them against their enemies - in particular, Oily Sludge the wharf cat. And so they kidnap a gorilla from the zoo and dress him up as a person. London goes on full alert looking for the lost gorilla, but Alf is becoming harder and harder to find as he becomes more and more human everyday."
