Recently, some members of my family were talking about children's books, and
the nursery rhyme 'Hickory, Dickory, Dock' came up. My aunt says she
remembers having this book when she was little (1965-1970). The book was
roughly the size of a small Dr. Seuss book (hardcover). The cover had a
picture of a grandfather clock and a mouse on it (a 'real looking' picture,
not a cartoon). Here are the verses that she came up with. She thinks there
may be more.

Hickory, Dickory, Dock
The mouse ran up the clock
The clock struck one, the mouse ran down
Hickory, Dickory, Dock

Little Mousie blinked his eyes
And scratched his tiny ear.
The striking was such a shock
It made his head feel queer.

"I'm hungry now", said Mousie.
"I need a bite to eat".
So he tiptoed to the kitchen
To look for something sweet.

He twitched his nose from left to right
And then he started drooling.
For over on the windowsill,
A cherry tart was cooling.

The sill was just a leap away (PICTURE - Mousie w/ his face in the
And quicker than a minute. tart)
Mousie jumped right on the tart
And stuck his face right in it.

The cherry juice came bubbling out (PICTURE - Mousie washing in
And stained his fur quite pink the sink)
So Mousie had to take a shower
Beneath the kitchen sink.

He scrubbed his paws and wiped his jaw
And cleaned his furry chin.
And as he shook the water off,
The old gray cat walked in.

"Hi, Mousie", said the old gray cat.
"Please don't run away.
For you know I love you dearly
And I only want to play."

-?-?-?-?-?-?-?-?-?-?-?-?-?-?-?-?-? (PICTURE - Cat chasing mouse through

The lid fell off the kettle flying about)
And hit the frying pan.

Said Mousie, "It's a circus!
I've never had such fun.
But I hear footsteps coming
So it's time for me to run".

There may be other verses to this, but we don't know what they are. If you
can help me, please post your findings here or E-mail me a message.

Thanks.

I had this book as a child. Bought it at a garage sale. I have the whole thing memorized (except one line that I just can't seem to remember) I don't remember the verse about the clock strike making him feel queer, but maybe they took that out in later versions.

I'm hungry now said Mousey, I need a bite to eat. So he tiptoed to the kitchen to look for something sweet. He twitched he nose from left to right until he started drooling; for over on the windowsill a cherry tart was cooling.

The sill was just a leap away, and quicker than a minute, Mousey landed on that tart and stuck his face right in it.

The cherry juice came bubbling out and stained his fur quite pink. So Mousey had to take a shower inside the kitchen sink.

He wet his paws, and wiped his jaws, and cleaned his furry chin. And as he shook the water off the old gray cat walked in.

Hi, Mousey said the old gray cat. Please don't run away. You know I love you dearly and only want to play.

Mousey took a flying leap amd tried to hide himself behind a box ofncrackers that was standing on the shelf.

I see your tail the old cat said. It's showing at the end. So stay right there and I'll come up to visit you my friend. Said Mousey you are very kind, but I've been fooled before. He gave the cracker box a shove and knocked it to the floor.

The box flew open on the way and crackers filled the air. The old cat cried meow, meow and drodged behind a chair.

When Puppy heard the cat's meow he bounded in the room, and with his clumsy feet he hit a bucket and a broom. The bucket went tumbling on its side, the broom came tumbling afterwards, while little mousey on the shelf was doubled up with laughter.

This is where I lose a line or two.

Then after the it's time for me to run line.

He knew a secret stairway that was just inside the wall and through a door he disappeared wickers tail and all. He had to run a long dark way before he reached his house, but waiting there to meet him were dad and mother mouse. His brothers and his sisters too came running in a flock, to hear how Mousey fooled that cat and how he climbed the clock. When Mousey's story ended they clapped their paws with glee and little mousey danced away as gay as he could be.
