Help me remember Krakatoa balloon story!

Once upon a time, I read a children's story about a man who traveled to
Krakatoa in a balloon. He left just as the volcano exploded. Can anyone
help me remember the name or author of this story? A coworker thinks it
might be Jules Verne's "Around The World In 80 Days", but I'm not sure.

There is also a balloonist who plans to fly over the volcano in a movie
centering around the explosion of Krakatoa, made in the early-mid sixties,
I think. Naturally I can't remember the name of it! All of the characters
are on a ship heading towards the doomed island, each for his or her own
reasons but held together by brave yet troubled captain (Maximillian
Schell?) who is having romance with beautiful passenger (Diane Ladd?) and
most of them perish in one way or another! One of those movies...Brian
Keith is also in it. Krakatoa East of Java?

There is a plot like you outline in a Newbery Medal book, THE 21
BALLOONS by William Pene duBois.

I remember the ads for that movie, too. Never saw it. Interesting
thing is, that Krakatoa is WEST of Java, as a glance at the map will
show. But what do movie makers know?

Okay, I could be totally off on ths, but I'm just trying to help: I don't
know about the movie, but it sounds like one of my fave childhood books:
"The Twenty-One Ballons", by William Pene DuBois.
Did they really make a movie of that? (Or am I just totally off track...)

Yes that's right. I found it in Leonard Maltin's
Movie and Video Guide.

Krakatoa, East of Java (1969)
Maltin says:
"Muddled epic-adventure of disparate group sailing
for location of treasure-laden sunken ship. Attempt
at Jules-Verneish saga hampered by shallow
characterizations, dialogue, but action footage is
first-rate, climaxed by volanic explosion and tidal
wave... Heavily cut after premiere, leaving story
more jumbled than before. P.S. Krakatoa was _west_
of Java. Retitled _Volcano_."
