Most sources claim he was born in 1921, but since his children would know the correct date, this birthday greeting would suggest his 100th birthday was this year, on Oct. 28th.

He grew up in Pittsburgh, PA and now lives in Sarasota, Florida.

He won the New York Times best illustrated children's books award three times in the 1950s.

"(He) has illustrated more than 200 children's books, most of which
he also wrote, and 40 of which he created with his wife Ethel. A
prolific guy! Most of these are designed for beginning readers..."
