I recently visited Horsey Island in Essex - the location of Secret Water by
Arthur Ransome. I drove to the causeway and walked as far out to the island
as I could without wellies. The approach was a bit derelict (builders rubble
and so on) but the mudflats were very evocative.

We're moving to Manchester soon so I'll be able to visit Alderley Edge as
well!

Stephen.

How cool!

I love the books, but haven't read up on the locations -- Alderley
Edge relates to the books how?

Have you read _How the Heather Looks_? Book about a family touring
the sites of children's literature in Britain.

When I was in England years ago, I actually rented a car (really big, automatic,
left-hand drive, etc!!!) just so I could get out to one of the places Ransome wrote
about (and to Beatrix Potter's house). The hike was incredible--it was just as he
described the places, just as his illustrations made it seem. One of the best days
of my whole trip.

Re: How the Heather Looks: Patricia, is that nonfiction or fiction?

Thanks!

It's non-fiction. Family's trip through Britain, finding locales from
children's literature; recently reprinted.

Yes, that is "way" cool...

Not to Arthur Ransome, but to Alan Garner. _The Wierdstone of Brisingamen_
and _The Moon of Gomrath_ are so specifically set there that you would
recognize the places (check out the Garner website for photos of you're not,
like lucky Stephen, able to go there).

Yes, it's lovely, and has just been reprinted.

You probably mean Alan Garner, don't you? Yes, it's all there.
Completely worth it and very beautiful. You can do a long walk taking
in Goldenstone, Stormy Point, Saddlebole.... No sign of any deadly
footballers. You can also see Garner's house very easily, and the
school in Goostrey for which he wrote Holly from the Bongs.

Mow Cop is still there, too, and so is Barthomley church. And Crewe, of
course.

Looking forward to Coniston Water and The Old Man Of Coniston as well - the
Lake District is within reach of Manchester!

Stephen.
