Hi! Can anyone tell me about the books by Carolyn Haywood? What are to
"Eddie" books about and what age group are they for? I have never read
any of these and wanted to know if they are worth buying. Thanks!

The Carolyn Haywood books are wonderful! They are written on a 2-4th grade
reading level but my 5th grade students love them as well. The books are all
about children and the setting is around the 40's and 50's. Eddie is one of
the boy characters and is always into something interesting. He has many big
ideas and gets the other characters involved in them as well. Most of her
books are about Eddie or Betsy.

I loved these books as a child and still love them as a teacher. I would love
to have a collection of all of Carolyn Haywood's books. If you know of a
source for them please let me know!

Have fun reading them!

Yes, they are worth buying. Fortunely I see they are still in print. I was
raised on these book growing up in the 1950's. They were my first
*readers*.
When my daughter was about 5 I started reading them to her. The books
revolve around Betsy, and her younger sister Star. Eddie is a friend
of Betsy's. The books are a little bit like the Henry/Beezus/Ramona
Beverly Cleary books as most of their adventures revolve around family,
friends, school and thier nieghborhood.

I know amazon has all of them (is that what you mean by a source?) Anyhow, the
page is: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/015206947X/ukguides/

Hope this helps,

Paul.

As usual, Amazon.com's list is partial and lists mostly paperbacks
which are still in print or were recently published. The older hard-
covers are no longer available and attempts to "order" them through
them will cause you to pay much more than you would for the same books
from a bookstore or on the used book databases. At the moment, we
have a little more than a shelf full of these books.

Since Mark asked how many books she wrote, I turned to the Library of
Congress and came up with the list which appears below my signature
line. I hope it is helpful and informative. A more comprehensive
list may be found in the printed book TWENTIETH CENTURY CHILDREN'S
WRITERS (St. James Press, 1994). The LC list contains some duplicates
as they were reprinted in paperback, etc.

Well, according to CHILDREN'S BOOK & CREATORS, Haywood wrote more than 50
children's novels, with approximately two dozen dealing with Betsy or Eddie or
both. She usually did the illustrations as well. I've got lists of titles
stored on another machine. If you want them, e-mail me and I'll send them out.
