Sardine ice-cream?

I was watching Iron Chef this past weekend and the theme ingredient for
the episode was sardine. When I saw one of the chefs putting sardines
into the ice cream maker I was hit by an incredible sense of deja-vu,
which is very weird since sardine-flavoured ice cream should theoretically
be a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

After puzzling for a few moments, I had a vague memory of sardine ice cream
appearing in an Enid Blyton book I read as a child. I vaguely remember
the story involved a tall tree with a series of magical lands that
rotated by every couple of days. Some nasty character went up to an
ice cream vendor and asked for sardine ice cream and was forced to eat it.
Unfortunately, I don't remember anything more than that -- it's been twenty
years or more since I read the story in question.

Could somebody please refresh my memory about whether -- as they say on
Iron Chef -- my memory serves me right, and what book this story comes
from? Thanks very much.

The tree sounds very much like the Faraway Tree. It's in several books,
which I _think_ include 'The Magic Faraway Tree' and 'The Enchanted
Wood'. I don't remember the sardine ice cream but it's certainly the
sort of thing that went on in the books.

The Enchanted Wood is the first, followed by The Magic Faraway Tree, and
then The Folk of the Faraway Tree.
Excellent books - I might have to go and read them again now that you have
triggered the memory!

Hey everyone,

Although I've never read those books, I do know that
i've seen "Sardine Ice Cream" made by none other than
that famous, green chef, Oscar the Grouch on Seseme
Street.

c'mon, I know you all remember... or should I say
"..watash..." ahh, nevermind.

Yes, this is from "The folk of the Faraway Tree" by Enid Blyton. The
three main characters, Jo, Bessie and Fanny, have a disagreeable cousin
(or possibly she is the daughter of a friend of their mother) to stay,
and she spends most of the book refusing to believe in or being rude
about the magic and the people who live in the tree. When they all visit
the land where wishes come true, she asks for a sardine icecream on
purpose to disconcert the icecream vendor and gets a nasty shock when he
hands her one with little fishy tails sticking out in the manner of a
chocolate flake! I can't remember her name though....it might be Angela.
