She says:
".......inspiration for my children's books begins with my own childhood: a close--sometimes too close--family life, side by side with fear; of the dark, of the huge old house where we lived with its woods, attics, and imagined ghosts, of my mother's bad health, and of the war, which though remote, colored everything. . . . I [try] to remember the kind of book that gripped me most as a child, the kind of situations I found most tense, and put them in. . . . I am convinced of the strength of goodness against the lure of evil."

Forgot to say - she wrote an autobiographical piece for volume 138 of the "Something About the Author" encyclopedias - it's about 11 pages long!

I just read her mid-school audience book Catch as Catch Can and loved it. I am 82 as of July 2019.

By the way, there's more than one thriller with that title - and it looks as though the Fantastic Fiction link above connects to the wrong one! (That book - for adults - is from 1953, by the Edgar-winning Charlotte Armstrong, who died in 1969. It takes place in California.)
