Born in Chicago, he now lives in Hastings on Hudson, New York.

"The Zack Files" became a TV series, 2000-2001. His other chapter books for children include the "Maximum Boy" series, the "Secrets of Dripping Fang" series, and the "Weird Planet" series.

Among adult readers, he's likely best known for the 1964 "How to Be a Jewish Mother," which became a Broadway play in 1967.

He wrote two pieces for "Free to Be...You and Me." They were "Don't Dress Your Cat In An Apron" and "My Dog is a Plumber."

His novel "Kiss My Firm But Pliant Lips" was turned into the 1968 Elvis movie: "Live a Little, Love a Little."

His first wife was the late, great Nora Ephron.

His son from his second marriage is named Zack.

His third wife is "Judith C. Wilson, who as J.C. Greenburg writes children's books, including the 18-volume series Andrew Lost." (That series is about science adventure.)
