My 4-year old is enjoying "James and the Giant Peach." Her 2 year old
sister listens too. I found it so entertaining, I've been reading ahead.

There are some mysteries by Robert Quackenbush, featuring
Miss Mallard, and Detective Mole. I have learned to dread them, but
both of my daughters have loved them. The mysteries have just enough
suspense to hold their attention, and enough adventure to give them
a thrill. And they feel satisfied at the resolution of the problem.
But I did get tired of reading them over and over ... and ... over ........
Also, the Uncle Tooth and Otto books are mysteries which are good for
that age.
Have you tried the Raggedy Ann books, or Doctor Doolittle? My first
daughter loved Raggedy Ann, even at age 2. I'm not sure just what she got
out of them, but she just adored the stories and pictures. Even on up
into kindergarten.

Another suggestion are the books about Sam by Lois Lowry --
he's Anastasia Krupnik's irrepressible little brother.
