Childhood book with Faraway Moses character in?? Please help

Am desperately trying to remember what book I read which had the character
of Faraway Moses in .... I think it could have been by Violet Needham but
not sure.... think there was a character in it called Witch Hazel too.
There was a picture on the front of it of a boy on a horse, pulling a canal
boat... or something like that.

It was in the late 50s I think. Could anyone help identify the book? Was it
something like 'The Constant Soldier' or some other similar title?

Any info would be gratefully appreciated!

The only "Faraway Moses" I can turn up on the 'net is the
pseydonym of Jacob K. Huff.
Using the names "Faraway Moses and Jake Haiden", he wrote
columns for the weekly newspaper "Grit" and for the Reading
Times. The columns were widely acclaimed as the work of a
true artist and his writing were syndicated in several Newspapers..

I check used.addall.com searched ABE and other book sites,
and nothing with that character showed up.

eBay just turned up a CD by Nefisa ;)

Spelling it "Far-Away Moses", The Innocents Abroad
by Mark Twain has a Turkish guide by that name.

Any clues about the story itself?

I've only read The Emerald Crown and The House Of The Paladin (which were
connected as regards characters and era) and The Changeling of Monte Lucio
(which wasn't) and I'd like to track down any other books connected with TEC
and THOTP.

I'm assuming the eight you mention comprise this category - are there any
