She lives in Greenwich, Connecticut.

She's been writing for children since 1957, but her first novel,
"Strawberry Hill," was published in 2009.

"Of all my books my favorite is a tiny one, long out of print, called
Hello and Good-by. It contains many of my early and still favorite
poems and is illustrated with simple line drawings by my husband
Norman. I specifically asked that it be small enough for a little
child's hands, a somewhat unusual format in those days."

Also the author of the series "You Read to Me, I'll Read to You." (Not
to be confused with John Ciardi's poetry book illustrated by
Edward Gorey. There are other books by that name too.)

I first heard of her in "Cricket" in the 1970s - the poem was "Yellow
Butter, Purple Jelly, Red Jam, Black Bread."

Excerpts:

1978 National Book Award (A House Is a House for Me)

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hoberman_sphere
(the Hoberman sphere, invented by her son Chuck)

"A Hoberman sphere is an isokinetic structure patented by Chuck Hoberman that resembles a geodesic dome, but is capable of folding down to a fraction of its normal size by the scissor-like action of its joints. Colorful plastic versions have become popular as children's toys: several toy sizes exist, with the original design capable of expanding from 5.9 inches (15 cm) in diameter to 30 inches (76 cm)."
