Book ID - Dragon, griffon and red pirate

When I was young, there was a row of books in the bottom shelf of the
bookcase at the top of the stairs - a 'remedial reading' scheme which
my mum had worked on materials for in the early/mid 70s (she thinks
the books were old then). I can't remember the publisher, although I
should know it.

All I can remember about the books is that there was a dragon and a
griffon who lived on an island (which might have had a tower with lots
of stairs). My mum can remember that the stories were about different
colours of pirates, including Roderick the Red, but can't remember the
names of the other colours.

What I'm looking for is not so much titles and authors and things
(although that would be good too), but anyone else who remembers
these, and can tell me more about the other pirates, and the
adventures they went on, in the hope that I remember it when I hear it
:)
