From time to time I come across photos of bonsai from China. Some are
to my untrained eye much like trees you could see created anywhere
from Kyoto to Köln to Kansas City. Some are however clearly designed
with a very different scheme in mind, a scheme quite remote from the
Japanese styles.

Apparently, there are numberous and distinct Chinese styles.

Can anyone recommend any good books on this subject? There are at
least two intro bonsai books written by Chinese authors, but neither
of these really discusses the regional differences. Of course, books
in English are easiest for me, but I can slog through modern Chinese
with a dictionary if I need to. Same with French, much less with
German and Japanese is probably right out at this point, 10 years past
my 3 semesters of Japanese.

William,
A really nice book detailing some of the various styles of Chinese bonsai is
called Selection of Famous Works of Chinese Miniature Trees and Rock, author
is Hu yun hua and Jin Bao Yuan, isbn 7-5426-119-4/J.
It is a really good book on the matter picturing various regional styles.
