Hi, everyone. I just bought a pair of bristlecone pines at a nursery that
look full, happy and healthy, except for a lot of little white dots all over
the needles - maybe one or two per needle. They seem stuck to the needles,
kind of like scale might be, except they aren't damp or squishy when I
scratch them off. The trees look to be about 3 years old, about 8 inches
high with trunks about 1/2 inch wide. Anyone have any insights for me?
Thanks in advance!

Don't worry about it. They are the trademark of bristlecone pine.
Nothing wrong with your trees other than that they are only 3 years old.
Which isn't too bad if you are 4.

Hi Nancy and all:
Do those sclales have a brown dot?
If so you can do as I did.
I spent one afternoon scraching those scales (sorry, I don't know the
english name of those gugs)

with a brush. After that I washed the entire tree with Soap. The soap seems
to kil the eggs.
It is such a common plage here in Mexico.

Nancy,

Don't worry about the white stuff on bristlecone pine (Pinus aristata)
needles, these white dots are resin from the needles. By the way, an
interesting note, the bristlecone needles persist for 10 to 20 years, unlike
many of the varieties more commonly used for bonsai whose needles persist
for two to four years.
