Sarah-- My SO is an Egyptology major and all I can say is good luck... She says
the best place to try is the encyclopedia set of Heiroglyphics... It's three
volumes in all... Also when you do find some line it most likely is giong to be
rather peotic in nature so I hope that doesn't bother you...

Good luck...

I think first you need to come up with a what you want then find the
pictographs that tell that story. I'd be happy to assist but first figure out
the meaning then translate. If you search for the perfect "phrase" it may never
happen.

I am currently writing across my back in preperation for a backpiece, the
images I've chosen each telling a portion of my life that had some significance
in who I am or who I would like to become. I think when dealing with symbols
this may be the easiest way to go about it. I have spent as much as 4 years
researching a single symbol to determine it's value and relevance to me.

Anyway, hope this helps, and if you get an idea but need a place to start drop
me a line, I got a pretty decent library in my room to work off of.

I'm currently looking at designing a piece incorporating the "Eye of
Horus/Ra" into an arm band for my girlfriend (she asked me to draw one
out for her). I was kinda stuck on what to make the
pictographs/glyphs say. Thanks for the working backwards idea...oh
and can i trouble you for some help too if I need any??

Not if you ever use the Ra name in conjunction with the Wedjat eye again.

Mmmmmm.... not really. Gardeners contains a cursory chapter on
Egyptian art that covers mostly funerary structures and sculpture, the
photographs of which do not lend themselves to linear designs. (ie for
a tattoo). The text does not contain anything more than a basic
overview of the succession of pharoahs and what massive things they
had built to show off. :)

Look for works by E.W.Budge, I believe is the authority I am thinking of, on
"The Egyptian Gods" and "Egyptian Hieroglyphs" as that is full of usable
graphics and authentic.

Keep in mind though that each image is a representation of a complex thought
within a visual image language. The ancient Egyptians, it appears believed in
visual image telepathy and in magick of various kinds, so the imagery is the
very core of their culture.

: actually, because it's in our charter:
: RAB Welcome FAQ: http://www.faqs.org/faqs/bodyart/netiquette

: to whit:

: The original charter of the newsgroup:
: Rec.arts.bodyart (RAB) is an unmoderated Usenet newsgroup for
: discussing "bodyart." Bodyart here refers to tattoos, body pierces,
: brandings (on humans; not on animals) and cuttings, although other
: modifications that involve some *permanent* form of body alteration
: for decorative purposes also qualify. While temporary tattoos and
: standard jewelry may be discussed here, they would be discussed in
: the context of permanent bodyart.

: and:

: If you would like to discuss bodypainting, please post to
: alt.art.bodypainting. The exception to this is the discussion about
: henna, which stays on your skin for a long time. Some people assume we
: discuss bodypainting because "bodyart" *can* include bodypainting by
: some (i.e. _Body Art_ magazine in the UK covers this subject). Since
: rec.arts.permanent-bodyart is an overlong and clumsy title, the
: founders of this group chose the simpler newsgroup title.

: so there ya have it. :)

: heidi

No problems with that. I guess my problem was that instead of stating
"... inappropriate to this group according to the charter which limits
the scope of this group to permanent modification...." the response
was simply "... inappropriate to this group".

Now, I personally feel that "bodyart" does cover bodypainting just
as much as it does "play piercings" and temporary tattoos. I don't
have a problem with the segregation of stuff into separate groups,
I just have a problem with the snooty "not appropriate" responses
that don't at least tell the person why they aren't appropriate
or where they would be appropriate.

Tell ya what you assure us that you read the FAQ first and then ya can complain
all ya want. It's all there. It doesn't take long to get bored with giving
reasons for the same stuff every week, hence the FAQs exist. This is one of the
better NG's I've seen and the reason is that it does a fairly decent job of
self moderation. Snooty is not he case, frustrated with newbies that think they
are the first to bring up an idea is closer to the truth. As for the FAQ issue
I highly reccomend it for any newsgroup.

I have read it several times (both Anne and Heidi's versions) over the
past couple of years that I have been reading and posting to this group.
I make a habit of going over the FAQs for the various groups I read
about once a year. Now, can I complain your high and mighty clownness?

I have a problem with people who seagull through a thread and tell
someone, usually a newbie, that what they are saying or doing is
wrong without ever telling them what they did wrong, or even where
to find out what the right thing to do is. That certainly fits the
definition of "snootiness" that I know.

Last person that called me Fester to my face ended up wetting themselves, just
so ya know. Those were the good ol' days.

Have fun with it, hell I do. However I think if you read the FAQ you will find
that it does bring up the fact that a "does it hurt to have my dick pierced"
thread is both repetitive and boring. I think any regular would agree that a
liberal use of search engines and faqs are all that most newbie questions need
to answer.

Could be you're right, but then again who takes someone in oversized shoes and
a red rubber nose seriously. I call em as I see em, sometimes I'm patient and
exchange a series of E-mails other times I crack the whip and hope for Darwin's
theory to start working faster. Hell all of us have been newbies at some point,
you should see the first post I made, Anne jumped all over my ass let me tell
you. I survived and so have the rest us reading today. Rack it up to an
initiation rite and it shouldn't trouble you anymore.

hmmm, maybe I can start handing out drinks from the fire hose to newbies, since
the rabbit ears and tails have kinda faded away.

Actually I'm very fond of Uncle Fester.

A group of friends and I were the Addams family a few years ago. My ex
was Fester, complete *with* light bulb ... he opened it up, and rigged
up a battery inside. When he touched it with his tongue, it would light.
Really cool. He won the best costume prize. He's a physics geek, by the
way.
