It's not necessarily a problem to have the ring in deep. If your
nipples were small to begin with, the piercer had to make the piercing
in the aureola. The ideal placement is right at the point where the
aureola meets the nipple. If it's a little off, it's okay, because over
the course of the next year you will build up scar tissue behind the
piercing such that your nipples will grow in size and the ring will then
be in the nipple. Mine started off in the aureola, now they're about a
third of the way down my nipples (which have gotten larger).

OTOH, there *is* such a thing as piercing too deep. If the piercing is
so deep that the rings won't lay down flat against the body, the
prognosis for healing is not good. The rings will constantly chafe
against one's clothing and are much more easily caught on things. i've
never seen a nipple pierced this deeply heal properly, and if you ever
find yourself in this situation, i'd advise going back to the piercer
and asking that they be repierced (after you've taken them out and given
them a chance to heal). Be advised that even the best piercers
occasionally have a bad pierce; consistency and perfection are not
really human traits.

:btw, what topical antibiotic do y'all recommend? how often to use it?
:thanks!

You're going to get a dozen different answers to this. The most
important thing to remember is that every body is different, and what
works for one person may not work for another.

Having said that, i'll tell you what i have used to heal my dozen+
piercings: as little as possible. i avoid neosporin because it inflames
my piercings; betadine stains gold, the material all my jewelry is made of
(and can cause a fatal reaction in people who are also allergic to shellfish).
Hibiclens is *way* too harsh for anything stronger that a little squirt in an
entire bathtub full of water. Vitamin E oil is not sterile and is a natural
anticoagulant that can cause the wound to become inflamed.

In short, unless i've got an active infection, all i use is a little
liquid Dial (or Dr. Bronners if you prefer) in the shower to clean off
the crusties, then i carefully rinse off all the soap residue.
If i get an infection i take some hot soak baths with a little hibiclens
(sea salt works well too). Other than that, i LEAVE IT ALONE and let my
body do its job.

Hmm, well you've never seen my nipples. It is possible to pierce quite
deeply if you use a long, straight barbell (just make sure the barbell is
long enough to slide back and forth through the piercing for cleaning
purposes). I've got 2 vertical barbells through one of my nipples, one on
either side of the centerline of the nipple, for that reason they tend to
go a bit more deeply through the aureole than most nipple piercings do.
Haven't had any more problems with them healing than I have with my other
more "conventionally" pierced nipple. Actually I found that using a
straight barbell was much more comfortable during the initial weeks of
healing than the ring on my other nipple.

First off, thanks for everyone who's responded! I've kind of fallen in
love with my new piercing and it's great to have positive feedback, even
from people who can't see it. :)

About the depth, from what y'all have been saying, I suspect that the
piercer did go a bit deeper than desirable, as it does stick out fairly
parallel to the ground, i.e. not hanging down from my chest. However, it
has started to droop a bit so I guess if I tug on it enough once it's
healed, it'll be okay. I have small nippes anyway so I think he did a
pretty decent job all things considered. In any case, I don't think I'm
quite up to having it repierced again anytime soon. :)

It's healing up quite nicely too. How long does it usually take for,
well, until it's able to be played with?

Ah, well, yet actually i *have* seen such piercings, but they were so
deep i didn't consider them nipple piercings. Fakir has two that are
left over from his O-Kee-Pa ceremony that are pierced vertically thru
his pectoral muscles about an inch or two behind his nipples: total
length of the piercing is about 4 or 5 inches.

Using a barbell for such a deep piercing would avoid the problem of the
ring sticking out and brushing against the shirt, but such a piercing
isn't for a beginner, as it requires more experience to successfully
heal it. In fact, using a barbell instead of a ring in healing certain
piercings can lead to catastrophe; not necessarily the nipple, but
certainly it's a bad idea to use a barbell as initial jewelry in any
scrotal piercing. The risk is that an infection will cause swelling
around the ends of the barbell, trapping pus inside the wound. At that
point you really have only one choice, to take the jewelry out and lose
the piercing.

But is that true if the barbell is much longer than the piercing? The
barbell I used for my 2nd and 3rd nipple piercings was almost twice the
length of the piercing itself. Only after each piercing healed for about
4-5 months did I replace the long barbell with a short one. I'd certainly
never suggest that someone use a short barbell for an initial piercing
because it's essential to be able to slide the jewelry back and forth for
cleaning. FWIW I chose the long BB for my 2nd and 3rd piercings because
even though it wasn't very deep, the ring I used in my first
"conventional" nipple piercing was uncomfortable for about 2 months before
it settled down and started healing properly.

Nipples are deceptive in this regard. They take longer to heal
internally, quite a bit longer. If you want to be on the safe side,
wait about four months before you engage in any heavy play.

Now, i know as soon as i say this that we'll hear from a bunch of
people who played with their nipple piercings at a much earlier
point with no ill effects. However, i've heard from a fair number
of people who just couldn't leave them alone, and complications
set in, and they lost the piercing. As i said before, each body
is different. Recommendations like the ones you're asking for
have to be devised for the lowest common denominator, i.e., the
people who would have trouble if they tried this. YMMV.

i'm not sure how he did it. i'll have to remember to ask him that.

Such jewelry wouldn't be very comfortable in a scrotum piercing, where
it's constantly going to be jostling against underwear, jeans, etc.
And in any case, the scrotum swells quite a bit more than other types
of skin during an infection. i still wouldn't advise it, based on my
own personal experience of having tried this myself. i lost the

I had my nipple piercing played with about 7 weeks after it was done, and it
was fine. It had just stopped crusty-ing, but it *did* start up again about
3 days after the last bit of playing. I didn't have anything rough done
to it, no tugging or weights or anything, just tongueing (oh my!). I have
no idea if playing with my nipple earlier would have been bad, but I suspect
it would have been since it was still crusting and it did start again later.
I know for sure that my nipple wasn't completely healed even 12 weeks after
piercing since I was a little rough with it in a slam pit and it took me
another 2 months to get it fixed again.

Have fun,

One last followup... it's started to itch mildly, but doesn't look
inflamed or oozy or anything like that; anything to really worry about?

the signs of infection are redness, swelling, pain and *heat* along with
discharge. check for heat by using your knuckle (fingertip isnt
sensitive enuf) and comparing w/ temp of other parts of your body

itching may mean it's healing or that youyre overcleaning it

I know this doesn't exactly follow on the same train of thought, but I'll just
ask...

I finally got my nipples pierced professionally (after 3 self-inflicted and
unsuccessful tries each), and I am very pleased with them. It's been about
a week now, and they are really quite happy. The only thing is that one is
deeper than the other. Now, while it might seem I want to inflict pain upon
myself, this is not actually the case, and I don't want to take it out and
repierce later. So: is there any way to move it forward without chancing
training it to grow all the way out? I was thinking just pulling might do it,
but I'd rather hear from someone who knows before trying it...

I was also thinking that heavier jewelry might do it... (5/8" 12ga right now)

Well, not really a delurk, but close... :)

Thanks, Liz.
btw: just for Joe deRosa, I'm a different Liz too... ;)

Nope, a little, nope, and nope! Whew!

Overcleaning? *over*cleaning? wow, such much to worry about. Don't
underclean, don't overclean, don't play with it too much, or too little.
Boy oh boy, can't wait 'til it's healed. :)

Speaking of, when it is, where is a good place to get nifty jewelry?

Well, you are all wrong. I didn't pick on that other Liz because
her name was Liz, but because I confused her userid 'liz.ard@*'
with another userid 'lizard@*'.

I have already appologised, both here on the net and in private.

To think that you were reading Aristotle before we met! I'd only amend it to include that the outcome of a man living without good friends can be explained by lesion on the under side of the pre medial frontal cortex. Otherwise, yes I "man" would not continue;) I was so pleased too, though you probably couldn't tell. another of my poor claims to manliness.
