I finally went and got my tribalesque dragon yesterday. Yea!!! But I need some
advise from other women (or men who know women) who have healed a tattoo that
is partially covered when wearing a bra ....

My aftercare instructions say not to re-bandage but I wonder if I need to do
something to prevent my bra from rubbing on the new tattoo? Any advise you can
give is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Mary

Wear loose clothing and don't wear a bra. If it is *on* your breast, and
you're big enough that this might mean the tattooed skin will be stretched
and possibly injured, try a sports bra or something without soft and
seamless.

Skin needs to breathe to heal. Again, if at all possible, go braless. It's
only for a few days.

That should be "something soft and seamless", not "without"...

Put Saran Wrap over it. I put a tat on my sister's chest and told her to put
the wrap over it to keep her bra from rubbing, she did so for 3 days and she
didn't even get any scabbing. The last time I worked on my chest piece I
covered it up where the bra line was and the wrap does keep it from rubbing.
Just be sure to let it breathe at night. Good luck with it, bras are a bitch.

Would Saran Wrap keep your skin from "breathing"?

You don't have to tape it in place, your bra will hold it on the spot where it
needs to be covered.

congrats on the new tat!
You might want to avoid wearing a bra if you can. The straps may rub
against the tat and pick the scabbies for you. Maybe try a tank top?

This is slightly off topic, but does anyone know if this technique could
work in regards to wearing nylons over a new tattoo? I'm getting one on
my lower back later this week, and I'm not sure what to do when I go
back to work and have to wear those freakin' things again...

Thanks to everyone for the suggestions. I wish that it was possible for me to
go without a bra but I haven't been out in public without one since 1980. ;-)

I decided to try slipping a piece of soft gauze between the tattoo and my bra.
So far it seems to be working ok. I am being extra careful, not stretching
with my right arm and shoulder, stopping any movement if I feel the slightest
pulling. Fingers crossed, I will make it through the next few days without
damaging the tattoo.

I agree to not re-bandage, how necessary is it that you wear a bra? I've always
been able to go braless for the 7 days or so it took my shoulderblade tattoos to
heal. I did have a problem with my newest tattoo (calf band) being rubbed by sock
elastic one day. It developed a scab and when it did heal it had pulled some of the
color out, and so will need to be retouched.

when i had my shoulder blade tat done, i simply applied a thin layer of
bacitracin over the tat and it provided an ample layer of protection from bra
chafe ;)

mo'
notice i did NOT say neosporin! antibiotic will suck the color out!

Tegaderm (3M) or Bioclussive (Johnson & Johnson) works better. It
lets the skin breathe, for one thing. It also won't move around,
which can sometimes cause more irritation. I finally ended up using
Tegaderm where my calf piece hits the fold of my knee. Not only was
the area irritated from skin rubbing on skin, but the dance costume
I wear has knee britches and stockings. Which hit right exactly on
the irritated spot.

Sigh. Definitely will have to get the spot touched up, but that's
because it I only thought to use the Tegaderm _after_ it'd gotten
raw and infected and nasty. If I'd used it from the first, the
spot would've healed normally.

Never, oh never, oh never again
If I live to a hundred or a hundred and ten!

When I do the other calf, I'm going to make *sure* it doesn't roll
around to the backside of the knee joint.

Bacitracin _is_ an antibiotic.
The main reasons to avoid antibiotics are
1) possible allergic reaction
2) repeated exposure can _induce_ allergy
3) repeated used where it's not neccessary can help foster
resistant bacteria

If you really want to avoid antibiotics use A&D ointment or Aquaphor.

If you *have* to wear a bra for whatever reason, wear a sports bra -
no metal closures, and no underwires to dig in. If you can get away
with it, wear a bodysuit instead. The less elastic the better.

Nylons - icky - if you can get away with it wear a catsuit instead -
that way it's one solid piece over your back, you don't have the
elastic waistband rubbing. If you can't get away with a catsuit, then
try wearing thigh high stockings instead of pantyhose. Don't bother
with garters - just as bad as pantyhose - get the kind with the killer
elastic at the top so they stay up, or knee highs if you can wear
pants.

Wear a longer skirt with a low rise waist and thigh highs, doing that will prevent rubbing and be careful when sitting so your shirt doesnt stick to the ink.

Ok I found the BEST SOLUTION! I hope everyone that gets a new sternum tattoo sees this I got mine last week and I have a ton of unpacked sports bras from Victoria Secret and I literally used a hair tie and tied it around the front of my sports bra while I have it on and it scrunched up the sternum area of it so it doesn’t touch my tattoo and it’s perfect I’ve been wearing different bras all week and it never rubs!

I did it by putting a hair tie inside my sports bra and pulling one end of the hair tie through the bottom and top part of my bra. Then I loop one end of the hair tie inside the other end and pull it tight then I grabbed one of the knots I made when doing that and put my hair tie under it and pulled again so that it would stay in place and boom it’s perfect!
