Hi! Im new to this, and forgot I had subscribed, but was very happy
I had when I caught up on the postings. I'm sure you've gotten this
question a thousand times, but what is the best advice on tongue
piercing? Im dying to get it done, but want to be safr about it. Also,
I can only wear gold in my ears ( so I dont wear earrings) and I dont
want a gold barbell. What material is non-allergenic?
Any advice at all would be much appreciated :)
Thanks,
Justine (Pixydustr)

This could have easily happened to me too (but didn't). My tongue really
swelled up after the piercing and didn't really go down until over a
week later. (I can't stand reading posts from people who only went through
2 to 3 days of swelling, or who could eat solid food after a day.)
The top ball was pulled into my tongue after a day or two due to the
large amount of swelling (plus possibly my playing with it too roughly).
Before the hole healed, I pushed it back out again. Method: stick out
tongue as much as possible, place index and middle fingers on top of
tongue, one on either side of the hole, place thumb under bottom ball,
and *push*. Top ball should stretch the hole (yes, it hurts!), then pop
out.
To stop the top ball from embedding itself into my tongue again, I folded
up a piece of surgical gauze and stuffed it under my tongue. It filled up
the space there, pressing the bottom ball right up against the undersurface
of my tongue (and hence keeping the top ball completely clear off the
top surface, allowing the hole to close to just the diameter of the barbell
shaft.
Having to walk around all day with a wad of gauze stuffed unconfortably
under my tongue only added to the misery I was going through what with
the pain, the inability to speak properly, and the inability to eat
solid food. Naturally, I took it out when I wanted to speak or eat some
liquifood, but most of the time, I wasn't doing either, so it stayed in
there most of the time. (Not the same piece of gauze; I would replace it
with a fresh one halfway through the day.) I put up with it because the
prospect of having the hole heal with the top ball inside my tongue was
even less appealing.
Kept this up for about 2.5 days, then took out the gauze and waited to
see what would happen. Nothing did. Apparently, the hole had closed
enough, and the swelling had gone down sufficiently, that the top ball
was no longer in danger of getting pulled into my tongue. The remainder
of the healing process (about another week) went as normal. I've not
had any problems with my tongue piercing since then.
Hope this was useful, or at least interesting.

I think I will print out these posts to show to clients who say why do i need
something THAT big when I pull out a 7/8" barbell for them...
The inital barbell for your tongue should be TWICE as long as your unpierced
tongue at rest. Don't let someone who hasnt measured your tongue (even eyeballing
it, as eyeballing CAN work for experienced piercers) come near your tongue with
too short a barbell.

To be safe go to one of the recommended piercers in the FAQ's. They'll use
proper surgical steel bar's that won't cause any adverse reaction for you.
Oh and don't do it the dat=y bbefore your due to make a big sales pitch.
