i've been looking for online body jewelry shops, and have noticed that in
many catalogs the size is measured in mm rather than gauges. does anyone
know conversions, for lack of a better word? i've been searching for a
chart, but to no avail. i am specifically looking for the mm equivalent of
4g.
also (i'm sure this has been asked before, forgive me) does anyone have
recommendations of reputable online shops? i'm looking for some
creative/unique plugs/tunnels, but i'm wary of ordering from people i've
never heard of.
thanks for your help,
amie

thanks for the ego boost.
The news server here ate the chart posting before I saw it, but in the
past I've seen at least two different gauge systems. Some jewelry makers
use the same gauge system as is used in the US for electrical wire ("AWG",
12ga = approx 2mm, 6ga = approx 4 mm, etc., complete list online at the
Web sites of various wire and cable manufacturers) while others use some
other system that's noticeably different. So maybe you need to know what
system is being used when somebody mentions a gauge figure.

Here's one listing of electrical wire gauges, from 40ga (.079mm) up to
10ga (2.60mm):
http://www.belden.com/products/Catalog/help/TechAWGSolid.htm
and for larger gauges there's the "solid" portion of
http://www.okonite.com/engineering/conductor-stranding.html
where a "mil" (in the Diameter column) = .001 inch = .0254mm.
But as I said earlier, I've seen some piercers using a different gauge
system. So you may want to ask your piercer what system they use.
