hi all, I'm planing on going to my first ever Con this year and
Atlanta Anime Weekend is the closest one to me right now. So I was
wondering if anybody went to last years' and how was it. I hope to
someday make it to the bigger ones in Cal, but for now will just try to
enjoy a little bit at a time. So any tips or just plain old Con stories
you have to share, will be appreciated.Thanks.

I went to the AWA last year, and it was my first ever con (in
anything). I had a largely enjoyable time. The dealer's room was good,
although if you're looking for deals, convention (at least this one) isn't
the one for it. I didn't attend many panels or video showings but a few I
did attend were enjoyable.

I had the most fun on the masquerade, despite my misgivings. I
took some pictures of the contestants which can be found at:

In my opinion, the AWA was a very tidy, enjoyable con. But since
I commuted to the con, I wasn't exposed to the hotel troubles that many
attendees apparently complained about. I'll probably go again this year,
although that depends on my schedule and school work.

I am definately going to the Anime Expo '96, with a couple of
friends, so the AWA may pale in comparison after that experience. But for
me, it was an enjoyable experience.

well... first (a minor point at best, but one that must be brought up by
me since i'm staffing) it's Anime Weekend Atlanta. AWA.. much eaiser to
say than aaw... try it! =)
as for how the con was... fora first year con, it was very good...
decently run and good events.... the venue was a little spotty, but they
fixed that this year...
everything looks like it'll be bigger and better this yearm but i still
think they need more guests. Of course they are working on this and have
till november.

Does helping run it count? I thought so. ^_^;

Well, in short, it was a heap of fun, even to those who had to keep
everything running. Despite the world's worst hotel (actually, hotel
MANAGEMENT, ie, the Castlegate staff from he**) it went off very well. I
was the Tech Director (as in the guy who gets the eaten tapes out of the
VCR's and re-sets the breakers and such ^_^) and I think that the guys
that helped us run all the events did one heck of a job!

A few notable events from last year:

Dorrie Sauls as Shinobu 1/2 (quite possibly the funniest soliloquy I
have ever heard at an anime con, period) in the Costume Contest...

the Dance After the Dance (everyone finally got drunk enough, and things
really started rolling ^_^;;;)

(note: self promotion alert ^_^;) The mega-watt Sound 'n' Video from He**
Main Video Room- we had a setup going that some movie theatres would covet...
picture rattling chandeliers, buzzing walls, and a 17 foot diagonal video
screen !_!

However, it's really hard to say one event out-shined all others. It was
just one big fun time for all involved, and it'll be even better this
year, since we actually got a NICE hotel this time! ^_^;;;

See you there- Holiday Inn Airport South, I-285 at Old National Hwy,
November 1-3 1996! We'll be throwing down, how about you?

Regards,
Gordon.

...five o'clock in the morning- where you gonna be?

Nov. 1-3, 1996.

If anyone wants the last Anime Weekend Atlanta Online Progress Report, I
can email it to them as I have the original tucked away right over here.

Or, if *enough* people want it, I can re-post it (I posted it about 2
weeks ago, BTW). It's kinda large, so I would like confirmation that
a substantial number want to see it again before unloading the next
metric bu... um, I mean re-posting it! (Sorry, I almost got caught up in
our own hype there ^_^)

Regards,
Gordon.
