The latest issue of Entertainment Weekly (#124/125, 6/26 cover date,
double-sized "What is Cool" summer issue) has a short blurb about
anime ("Cool Animation"). The following is all copyright 1992, no
permission granted for reproduction, etc etc... Errors are probably
my fault.

Japan's racy 'toons

Mickey Mouse may be enjoying the French countryside now, but he's
getting his butt kicked in Japan. Japanese animation (anime) is a
raucous and raunchy head trip for grown-up kids - a cyberpunk world
populated by nearly nude catwomen, nubile robots, "Super High-Grade,
Hi-Fi, Excellent Atomic Missles", and villains named "Freud Jeung".
Sprung from the ruined landscape of postwar Japan, anime videos revel
in the apocalyptic chic of Terminator movies and MTV. The 'toons zip
around like amphetamine pinballs, spouting campy dialogue and blowing
up (or having sex with) everything in sight. From classics like Speed
Racer to moodier contemporary fare like The Grave of the Fireflies and
Project A-Ko, anime tapes have emerged from the US comic underground
into huge retail chains like Tower Video. Mouseketeers, beware: the
Magic Kingdom may never be the same.

Well, its nice that anime is being called "cool" in a national
magazine, its just kind of depressing that, like Premire magazine last
month, the primary focus is on how sexy and violent anime is. Not
that for most anime that isn't untrue of course.

I never considered Project A-Ko to be "moody contemporary fare"
though....

Oh yeah, on a similar note, I saw some anime on the Playboy Channel
recently; it was the third part of a show called Mr. Happy - different
to say the least. As you might have guessed from where I saw it, its
an adult program...if you are familiar with the Robin Williams routine
about "Mr. Happy" you have a good idea of what the show was like!
Does anyone know anything about this show? They cut off most of the
credits at the end so I don't really have any info about it, though
the voices that did the dubbing are very familiar!

I know, and the diction that is used in the so-called article is
just real *GREAT* too, don't you think? Maybe it will attract some
new followers when most of the words used to describe anime have
sexual or violent denotations.(Sarcasm off)

BTW, how did they ever get the name "Freud Jeung", unless, of
course, they're doing it the Asian way with last name first and all
that.

Well, 20 people have probably already replied to this message, but it
could be Junk Boy, which is a charming tale of a boy and his gonads...

Actually, you're the first.

The main character in "Mr. Happy" didn't look much like a boy - does
Junk Boy's, er, organ look like a gopher (yes, a gopher! It was
brown, had big eyes, a nose, a big mouth, and even arms!)?
