No. ^_^

Seriously, there is a lot of good stuff you haven't seen.
Go to remus.rutgers.edu, and get everything under pub/anime/faq,
especially the Anime Pocket Guide.

> I have heard Laputa but never seen it

Yes, that's very good.

> Dagger of Kamui (is it a hero against ninja or against some god or something?)

It's a ninja against other (evil) ninja. Nice visuals, but it's kind of slow.

> o Windaria (saw this thing at a Sam Goody's. Saw StreamLine and I put it

The original is great, but Macek pretty much killed it.

> o The Wind's Name is Amnesia (just sounded interesting...)

It's a *very* interesting concept. The execution, alas, is not all it
could have been. Still, recommended to those who like weird stuff.

I'm a 1st year anime newbie with sukoshi information for you, and I'm
wondering myself of any good stuff out there (ie. has a plot - unlike
Dragon Ball Z). To answer your Laputa question, it is by the same person
who did Nausicaa. When you see it, you will be able to tell it via the
artwork.
My meager list of anime that I've seen and liked (and recommend):
* Laputa
* Totoro (also by the artist of Laputa and Nausicaa)
* Vampire Princess Miyu
* Silent Mobius 1 & 2
* 3 X 3 Eyes
* Tokyo Babylon
* Record of Lodoss War
* Project A-Ko
* Iczer 1 ; Iczer 3
* a couple of others, but don't remember the titles to them
If anyone has any titles to recommend, doozo...

Well, I'm a 6 month anime newbie (hint hint to any 3 month anime newbies
out there :).

I've come to the conclusion that seeing any more than 3 Miyazaki
productions is redundant. This is after seeing Lupin episode 155,
which features robots which look almost exactly like the ones which
appeared later in Laputa (even down to the laser).

>If anyone has any titles to recommend, doozo...

The first half dozen of Yuu Yuu Hakusho have a plot, but then the
plot slows dramatically as it enters "fight-of-the-week" mode. I
still like it, though (unlike DBZ). Here follows more likely
suggestions (which I have seen and highly recommend):

Maison Ikkoku
Irresponsible Captain Tylor
Gundam 0083: Stardust Memory (the OVA series, _not_ the movie)
Lupin III (any, but esp Plot of the Fuma Clan and Castle of Cagliostro subbed)
Ranma (when Viz starts subtitling it)
Patlabor TV (I didn't like the movie, but the TV series is funny)

Other titles which or good, but not as awesome as the above:

City Hunter (either you like it or you don't)
Dirty Pair (ditto)
Urusei Yatsura (ditto, but the OVA's are the best)
Bastard OVAs (If you liked Lodoss)

Actually, if you *really* want to get into wierd stuff, there's also
shows like Angel's Egg....

More seriously, one of my favorite movies is _Wings of Honneamise_. The
plot can move a little slowly at times, but it has a great storyline,
character development, an interesting culture, and much more. Then
again, I might be biased by the story line (see my .sig...). :-)

3 Miyazaki productions? Let me think ... Laputa, Valley of the Wind and
Porco Rosso (sp?) ...

Add to that: Totoro (thought not appeal to me ... but my sister love it)

I wonder ... Why no Kimagure Orange Road?

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!! (with sequence TV -> OVA -> movie)

Ah, Kaze no namae ... Yes, I liked it.

Also try:

Kaze no Tairiku (The Weathering Continent)
Blink and you'll miss something important, nice music.

Breathtaking world, eh? Try any Miyazaki or Five Star Stories or
Wings of Honneamise.

> o Windaria (saw this thing at a Sam Goody's. Saw StreamLine and I put it

A wise decision. Windaria is one of the more pitiful Macekre victims.
The original, on the other hand, is a brilliant, moving tragedy. Find
yourself a fan sub.

> o The Wind's Name is Amnesia (just sounded interesting...)

This may be best described as a "conceptual piece of science fiction".
It's an interesting twist on the post-holocaust genre because of the
mechanism that causes the "holocaust".

To wit: What would happen if humanity lost all memory of its culture
and history?

Hope this helps,

Bad conclusion. Sounds as if the three things you saw were Laputa,
Cagliostro, and that Lupin ep, or possibly Laputa and two Lupin eps.

Other than most productions having a Nausicaa/Clarisse/Fio clone, the
stories are quite different. Aside from the similar character design
I just mentioned, you probably happened across the greatest parallel
in Miyazaki's works.

Kaze no Tani no Nausicaa, Kurenai no Buta, Tonari no Totoro, and Majo
no Takkyubin are all quite different from both each other and Laputa
and Cagliostro.

Hope this helps,

I considered buying it too--until I actually saw it, rented. I
was... extremely disappointed. I guess if you like action, it'd be cool;
but I'd rather have a plot which is at least somewhat believable. There
were too many coincidences, and the characters were rather uninteresting
(to me, anyway). Practically everyone dies (the main reason I say this
is just that the movie was so darn predicable--very annoying). I think
the writer tried to string too much together (it is written as historical
fiction... or fantasy, or whatever).

I'd suggest seeing Battle Angel Alita (which I _really_
liked--great animation and plot (IMNSHO); it's not about mecha, although
it is about cybernetics), Kimagure Orange Road (definitely the TV
episodes, if you can get them somehow), and... Ranma, except that you'd
have to watch it dubbed (if that doesn't bother you, then fine). Not that
there isn't plenty of other stuff out there, of course... (:

Hero (ninja himself) against an entire army of ninja (no this is not a
*spuer*hero, he gets help...) If you like action &/or ninjas, this is it
for you.

KiKi's Delivery Service and Nausicaa (Valley of the Wind) are the only
Miyazaki's anime I recommend.

Agree. ^_^

This is the one I HIGHLY RECOMMEND:

Slam Dunk

Let me add more:
Ghost Sweeper Mikami
Patlabor movies (1 and 2)
Aa Megami-sama
V Gundam (if you haven't watched any Gundam animes except F91 and 0083)
Captain Tsubasa (but I think it's VERY old now...)

Don't watch Sailor Moon or Hokuto no Ken so fast, otherwise you may have
misunderstanding about anime... watch them later... ^_^;;

Conmon Isaac, Does the film comic really count as the anime ? I admit that
V Gundam started off as trash but the series gets much better towards the
current episodes (like Sailor Moon).

BTW the Zeta Gundam Box set should be comming out in the middle of FEB. so
fan subbers should be should be hussling like mad for scripts. And I cant
wait :)

Has it been fansubbed (any)? If not, then I doubt it's suitable for
a newbie who doesn't know any Japanese.

> V Gundam (if you haven't watched any Gundam animes except F91 and 0083)

I haven't seen V Gundam, but based on the (cell based) manga, I have to
agree with those on r.a.a. with negative opinions of it. On the other hand,
Z Gundam's pretty good and it seems that most of the Z Gundam non-fans
don't like any Gundam anyway.

In any case, both have synospes available via ftp so the scarcity of
fansubs isn't such a great problem.

But then, I can't stand transforming mecha--Macross is borderline.

> Captain Tsubasa (but I think it's VERY old now...)

Where do you find this? I remember seeing it ten years ago, back before
the VCR revolution...

But again, for a newbie who doesn't know Japanese...

V Gundam gets better?

Now there's a concept! Which mushrooms do you use? 8-)

Excuse me. The only way VG could improve is by going off the air
or having the entire creative staff disappear in a freak accident
engineered by the LDP.

It's not that it's good. It's not. It's a merchandising mobile
that shamelessly exploits the "NEW TOY" sections of the young
viewers.

Sailor Moon is just as bad, it just happens to have better looking
robots.

This has been my humble opinion getting carried away with itself.

But, Katoki Hajime and Okawara are on the staff! how about all but those 2.
Look at the cool 0083 MS desigins by Hajime, he can do some good stuff.

Well, isn't that the case with all Gundam series? Zeta and ZZ had an even
stronger MS of the week feel (IMHO). Look how many eps. the Gabsurey lasted.
