Oh, we're here. We're just sifting through all the noise that's on this
board and posting relevant replies to relevant posts =) You know the ones
I mean, the ones that discuss how Keiichi & Belldandy get it on and with
whom else in the room. The ones that say 'Why would girls like DBZ?'.
The ones that say 'Linna's the best!' 'No, Priss is the best!' 'No, Nene's
the BEST!'. That sort of thing =)

Well of course we exist, what a silly (and frequently asked) question!
Hey, maybe that should be added to the r.a.a. FAQ: Yes, Female Anime Fans
Do Exist. :)
And if you want to know what type of anime we females like, the anwser
is: all kinds! I am certainly not into *only* shoujo stuff. Though I do
enjoy quite a bit of shoujo, I like many different types of anime! The
anime I enjoy include Macross Plus (Or any other type of Macross,
Robotech included,), 3x3 Eyes (loved the 3x3 Eyes II ep I saw as well!),
Sailor Moon (Both Original and US versions), anything Miyazaki, OMG, VGAi,
Irresponsible Capt. Tyler, Greenwood, Dragon Half, Blue Seed, Tenchi Muyo,
Marmalade Boy, Hime-chan no Ribbon, Akazukin Cha Cha, KOR, Lupin III,
Villgust, Ko Century Beast, Maison Ikkoku, Urusei Yatsura, Dirty Pair
(Original and Flash Versions), etc etc. I tend to lean towards comedy a
bit. :)

Yes, drastic, I know, but if you've been in fandom as long as I have,

Only been in it about a year, was a little slow to get started. One of
the things that went against me was the first anime Peter brought home
was Dirty Pair, which I positively hated (no disrepect meant to all the
DP fans out there). Then he started on the Bubblegum Crisis series, which
I despised too (again, no disrepect meant to the many BGC fans, although
I do admit the music in #1 is great).

I didn't really get into it until I started drawing again and I thought
I'd try my hand at the anime style and picked up one of those fat Japanese
magazines. In it, was an ad for Oh! My Goddess (which I couldn't tell at
the time as I can't read Japanese) and I was so intrigued by Belldandy,
that I just had to find out who she was. Got the video, and that's what
finally hooked me (ironic that I ended up liking Urd the best).

Since then, I decided to get the kids away from the "scantily clad babes
bearing guns" genre (after Peter brought home Gall Force) and started
on the Ranma series (from suggestions gleaned from this newsgroup). We
are now thoroughly addicted to Ranma, tho lightyears hehind everyone else
(we just picked up the one that introduced Ryoga).

Jonathan (my 9 year old) discovered Ronin Warriors all on his own last
summer which was to his advantage because we managed to get about 5 of
the figures before they all disappeared. And I got hyped up on Sailor
Moon from all the animated discussion here (and consequently got both my
kids heavily into it).

We're going out of town in a couple weeks and frankly, I don't know what
will be worse -- missing Gargoyles or missing Sailor Moon....

I think the original poster may have just been curious (well, maybe he was
trying to pick up girls). I've wondered myself where female fans are
hiding out. I have a large number of friend who are anime fans, and none
of them are female. I've also noticed a, well, shortage of them at
conventions and clubs. They're just not quite as numerous as male fans,
any suggestions why. (Note: this in no way implies they do not exist or
are scarce, just that there are less female than male fans).
Till next time...

Either that, or just curious. Someone stuck in Anime Wasteland, USA or
some other equally godforsaken place. I guess I should count myself lucky;
I attend a college (Carnegie Mellon U) with a sizable anime club. And yes,
there are females present. ;)

Sadly, don't have a GF yet. Not for lack of trying, though.

Heh. How about "falling", so to speak, for a character in a story you're

Eugene said it best. WOW! That is quite a list. It's no surprise
that there are female Macross fans. Macross has something for everyone.
I haven't seen even half of your list, but my list of anime watched does
compensate.

Back to the female otaku subject. Why would someone ask this? I am
guessing that the initiator of this whole thread is a man. I have a bad
feeling that the reason he asked this was because he wanted to pick up
on some women, or that he watched SO much anime that he didn't have
time to leave his bedroom and mingle with the opposite sex. Questions
like these give other anime-fans a bad reputation as losers. That's
NOT cool. Sorry if this sounded like a flame, I didn't mean it to be.

Gosh, I wonder why some of these guys even care <i, a guy myself>. Is
it that guys want to know if they are the only existing anime fans? Or
are these Anime guys getting lonely and wishing to find someone of the
opposite sex with the same interests? Or are the guys becoming sexist?
Either way, YES! Lot's of female fans exist out there. Why don't you
guys see them much? Dunno, maybe you guys scared them with the Ryo
Saeba act.

Female fans do not exist in the concentrations that male fans do.
Therefore we tend to use the mail rather than joining fan clubs, as a lot
of clubs are 90% male and never show the stuff we want to watch (there is
an enormous lot of overlap between what men like and what women like, but
it is true that women are a lot more into shows with pretty bishonen than
guys tend to be). Also, there are fewer women on the Internet (according
to a recent survey, the net is only about 40% female).

I have never tried to keep my sex quiet, as I'm perfectly capable of
utterly humiliating a guy who thinks that he's god's gift to women. My
experience, however, is that most male anime fans are shy and will not
hit on women they don't know. So if women *are* keeping away from the
anime boards out of fear that guys will hit on them, they really need to
learn how to handle reality. The Internet is one of the safest places
there is, as long as you don't give out your home address.

Probably a large part. :) There is something like a 90/10 percentage
of men/women involved in the hobby. (Like all my other interests...)
It is only natural to start wondering where the women are.

In my six odd years watching anime, the only time I have seen women
come to gatherings is apparently against their better judgement with
their boyfriends, whom they talked out of it. They all left early.

Look at the utdallas.edu message again. It's signed "Lauren" (the

The problem is that most anime that is translated, not most anime
that exists, is the babes with guns syndrome, which guys will of
course like, and females will despise. Personally, I hate it. But
whenever I talk to a fan of that genre of anime they give the Beavis
and Butthead response "girls with guns........ cool" I don't mean to
piss off anyone who likes this, but its not for me. I like story,
intelligence, and more than just fight scenes.

Just to add my voice to this subject...

I don't know the extent of female fandom, but I do know that some can relate.
A friend of mine realized that I watched Ranma 1/2 by the poster on my dorm
room wall. She instantly went into detail on how much she liked to watch
_Totoro_ (and I mean the subtitled version). She also told me about how
much she liked Robotech as a kid.

What I get out of this is that many people can relate with anime. Although,
some might not be obsessed fanatics of anything with a Japanese tongue and
large eyes, some can relate to when they used to watch this genre as a kid.
You might be surprised at the number who remember Voltron, Starblazers,
Robotech, or anything in this category. I know I was.

OK, great, they exist.. however:

The number of female anime fans is extremely small. 90% male, 10% female
is probably what it is. Go to conventions. You 'll see this ratio. So
if your an otaku looking for a girlfriend who also is an anime fan, tough
luck... finding one is like lotto. Why? I don't know. My girlfriend
hates anime, and she thought Ranma is very stupid. I was upset at her
remarks, but at least she watched KOR and said it was OK. So forget about
finding that special someone that will share your interests. Give up and
just have a relationship with a girl that shares other similiar interest.
The "anime gene" shows up alot in many males and few females. Just kidding.

And don't think you can use Tenchi pick up lines on R.A.A. or #anime! with
girls, cause when you chase, they will run. Its the genetic thing, males
pick up on females, females never pick up on males. They just kick back
and either accept you or dump you! Life isn't like Ranma 1/2 where girls
are asking you out. It is embedded in our genes for males and females to
have these qualities.

Wow, that was a good one! I'm gonna get flamed for this one!

PS: However, if you are lucky to know female anime fans, they are really cool!
Some of them laugh like B-ko! Its hillarious! But like I said, they are
very very few of them if any. You'll find a few of them lingering about
the bay area. I'll count about 5 of them.

Reminds me of the time I was in a store asking if they had this one

Him: (pointing) This one is good. You GOTTA see it.
Me: Uh...Why? What's so good about it?
Him: Oh it's SO good! You know, the girls in this? They don't wear a

What is especially great is the number of "powerful" female anime fans,

Yes, we ARE hiding from those morons that are truly bizarre! Onna Otaku
are a very unique type of woman, for you see, just like otoko otaku, they
like those who look like an anime character. So while you my dear chummers
are looking for Miria and Linna lookalikes, WE'RE looking for Ranma, Max
Sterling, and Hiroshi from Moldiver lookalikes....and most male otaku just
don't fit the bill. They are nice, but if they don't have long hair,
glasses, and a soft masculine voice, they lose. Most onna otaku date (or
marry!) the folowing "prototypes"...
Max Sterling (there is something about this guy....)
Harlock (I have no idea why)
Mousse (no, this isn't biased, Pearl-san. I'm not the only one that would
like to strip this bit of pen and ink down to his au naturel state and
find out about his "real" hidden weapon.)
and...
any anime male who dosn't get extremely hentai over a naked woman. You
name the type, they'll be the faves most of the time. (though there ARE
exceptions...)
If you want to impress an onna otaku and she has no fave man at the moment
animewise, try the tactics of these characters...
Hiroshi (Moldiver....sweet yet naive) Professor Go (Giant Robo... NO I'm
not kidding...he is your basic chinese gentleman) Mousse (skip the
nearsightedness, and just be dying to love her. Round rimmed glasses, long
hair of any color, and a slim yet slightly chisled build helps. Anime-man
type build...)
That may help....

It's not an Anime title, it's part of the "plot" (a term I use

Uhm. Yeah! Well, when I was a kid I always wanted to be like
Harlock. I didn't want to be a space pirate, I wanted to scar my face
and wear my hair like his.

Well, I ain't got no glasses. I cut my long hair because I do a
lot of dancing, and it's HOT! And I'm not exactly chiseled. I do,
however, have a ridiculously-deep radio announcer voice.

Guess I'm doomed to a life of loneliness, eh? :-) Actually, I've
got a girlfriend-- and she's scared to death of anything except Ranma
1/2. She's getting better though-- I showed her the Five Star Stories,
and she liked it!

I'm sorry boys. This is what most onna otaku like! I just can't shake
those guys! The first time I saw Hiroshi from Moldiver I squealed like
a high school girl. ("dammit! drop that towel!!!!!")
It's just the hair gives them a gentle look...like they won't hurt you
or kill you. (real fear if you watch enough anime and you're a girl)
A passionate look...something that can only be frozen as an expression, not
words...a look of innocent peace and doe eyed fear, things you don't
find in "real" men. Men are so afraid of being considered gay they won't
look or act like what some anime men act like. You don't see Max Sterling
trying to kill Rick in a freindly fight. (men like to sometimes beat
each other up to look "Macho") or Hiroshi beating the snot out of the enemy
like Van Damme. These men fight and work in a firm but gentle manner; class,
not brawn. Style, not power.

Something men tend not to realize is long hair needs constant maintenance
in order to look good. Guess since our society currently insists on short
hair for men, they don't emphasize this fine point.
