- The way Asuka was portrayed in episode 8 was what probably made
a lot of people like her; unlike the enigmatic and silent Rei,
Asuka is aggressive, perky, and has an attitude. While I didn't
particularly care for that kind of character, I could see what
others saw in her.
That impression was utterly shattered with the subsequent
four episodes, and confirmed my initial impression that Asuka is
a total and complete brat. Extremely bossy, always wants to be
in charge, and often gets outdone by Rei for her trouble
- Each episode has weird looking monsters. This is quickly turning
into a "monster du jour" situation...
For what it's worth, Asuka definitely is no fluke when it comes
to actual combat.
- Terror! Horror! Asuka moves in with Misato and Shinji with
enough stuff to fill up a 2-story house. Even worse is the
attitude she gives them about "small cramped Japanese apartments."
The synchronizing training between Shinji and Asuka is a hoot.
Even more so is the synched battle against the Angel conducted
by Eva 01 and 02 in episode 9.
- Episode 10 shows us an embryo of an Angel being incubated in lava
in a volcano. Seems all Angels start out as humanoid-looking
embryos but mutate into monstrous forms afterwards. Oh, and you
get to see Asuka dressed up as a blimp...
By the way, the poor trio have to miss out on the school trip
due to their duties...
- Evangelions run off electricity. The Geofront and NERV HQ need
electricity. So what happens when Tokyo-3 suffers a city-wide
power failure and the backup batteries happen to be dry? Find out
in episode 11.
While we're on episode 11: You don't have to be a leader to
demonstrate leadership. When the trio of pilots try to make their
way to the Geofront during the blackout, the self-appointed "leader"
Asuka gets her butt royally kicked by the calm and capable Rei.
Asuka: (angry) "Hey! *I* am the leader here!" (smiles) "So,
where's that place you just mentioned?"
- Episode 12 shows what happened in AD 2000 at the South Pole, 15
years ago. Misato was on location, and has a gashing scar on her
belly to prove it.
And for the first time, Gendou has something kind to say to his
son Shinji.
Gendou: "May I speak to the pilot of the test unit?"
Shinji: "Yes?"
Gendou: "Well done."

Obviously, Anno enjoys portraying his Ultraman-esque "Angels," but
what I find intriguing is that in any other show they would have
looked "angelic." Unlike MAZINGER Z, though ;-) we don't see who is
behind these monsters or what their motivations are

Don't knock it, it worked! ;-). It was also interesting to see Shinji
finally take a deliberate interest in the opposite sex, discovering in
the process that Asuka is a child, like him.

What a JD. Although Gainax is not the best place to check for hard SF
(except HONNEAMISE, I guess), I wondered if an electromagnetic cage
would work within lava. Don't metals lose their magnetic properties at
the "Curie Temperature," which is below their melting point? Of
course, this is molten rock, not metal, and the Angel is presumably
non-metallic. Any geologists out there? I majored in history.

As far as I know, this is only the second anime to have a laundromat
scene besides AKIRA. Gendou disses Shinji when he tries to tell his
father about his "career guidance" meeting at school, telling him
that's Misato's business as his guardian, not his. So Shinji's trying
to reach out...of course, the idea of Shinji discussing "career
guidance" with his dad is funny and sad at the same time, don't you think?

That was a gruesome flashback. But did we see Misato's scar at the hot
springs at the end of episode #10? I wonder if Gendou's warming up to
Shinji is part of his plan, too--does he have any real feelings for
him, or just for the Earth he's been entrusted with?

This is correct. Electrons become too wild to transfer from one atom to
the next and create an electric current. However, we don't know what
kind of metal is this (or maybe we *do* know, I haven't seen the episode
yet). For all I know, it may have a *very* high melting point.

I think Gendou is trying very, very hard *not* to have any feelings for
Shinji. He's afraid that either himself or Shinji will die, and that if
they were close together the surviving one would have to go through a lot
of grief.

Is this a direction transcription, or rough translation?
And in Ep 8, did the Captain of the carrier say "Shit" after Misato &
Co left the bridge?
Also, in and before Ep 8, we don't notice any scar on Misato's abdomen.

OK, I've seen eps 1-8, and, umm, uh, I don't know how many times, and
what can I say? Evangelion is awesome!!
Anyway, this scar, did I miss this somewhere? Which episode do we first
see it in? What caused the scar? I've looked over Wada-kun's scripts and
I can't seem to find any reference to it. (Maybe it shows up later, in
eps 9-12?)

...i'd like to believe what Conty is saying, that would be totally
cool (in a twisted, bizzare sort of way), but the pessimist in me
keeps nagging that Gendou's got some hidden agenda (ok, plus they
elude to it in the show. like: what is the real purpose of NERV? and
how is it connected to that embryo that Kaji-san brought over with
Asuka and the whole EVA project in general?)
...then again, i'm not necessarily sure that by saying, "good work,
shinji," that Gendou is 'warming up to him'. sigh.

When did we see Misato's abdomen, period? She's always
wearing a t-shirt... we see Misato's chest (and the scar)
for the first time when they go to the onsen in episode 11.
As to how she got the scar, we see that in episode 12...

I'd rather put it this way: though Gendou is distanced toward his
son, Shinji did merit a "well done," as a pilot from his commander.
And so Gendou gave it. As to whether he had any emotions regarding
that remark, is anyone's speculation at this point.

You're right about the Curie temperature. However the source of the
geomagnetic field (dipole and non-dipole components) has been
a "best guess" for over a hundred years. Though the source region
is most likely the mantle-outer core interface, it's an open question
of what percentage of "melt" is present and the nature of the flow,
amd flow regime. See Physics Today, Jan. 96 issue for some general
news on this. I'm not an expert though (only a BS in geology). ^_^
