How to get Someone Hooked on Anime?

Okay, I have just watch a tiny bit of Anime and I'm already hooked like a
fish...I am wondering if there is a certain one that seems to work quite
well for getting people sucked into it, especially adults. I think I was
mostly hooked by DNA^2, which I haven't even see all of yet. I am only
18, though, so I'm not sure if it would go over so well with older adults.

Any suggestions?

90% of all first-time anime fans (at least of those around during the unsubbed
bootleg days) were, depending on their tastes, officially declared otaku
after:
--Nausicaä
--My Neighbor Totoro
--Castle of Cagliostro
--Dirty Pair (original) OAV eps. or "Project Eden"
Not necessarily in that order (in fact, DP may hold the record...)

As for subtitling-era and after, add the reigning sub champions:
--Bubblegum Crisis #1
--Oh, My Goddess!

Keep in mind, no one's compiled the exact statistics, but ask around and you
should hear the same war-stories among fans...

You guys have never seen BASTARD!! ? Understandable; It hasn't been
released any where outside of Asia. It's basically a post-apocalyptic
tale that takes place in a medieval setting after Anththrax (Yes, I
spelled it right ^_-; he's basically the Devil) destroys the modern
world in 7 days before becoming split in four and contained by four
powerful clerics. After years pass, a powerful wizard named Dark
Schneider attempts to take over the known world (just for the sake of
taking it over) before he is banished by one of the 4 clerics, Geo.
Weeelllll, the series starts off with a powerful army that wants to
revive Anththrax and have the God make their nation eternal. Two of the
cities have already fallen, and Geo's city, Metallicana, remains (Have
you been noticing the blatant references to US metal bands..? ^_- ). The
city quickly falling, Geo has no choice but to turn to his age old
enemy... who, incidentally, is indirectly linked to his daughter by way
of a young kid, who is.... ... Ah, nevermind...! ^_^
Anyways, it's a really hilarious Anime in a non-comically obvious way;
the humor's very subtle. The charas kick (DS the protaganist is a bad
guy.. don't see that much..! ^_^) and the art is also extremely good...
It's a couple years old, you may not see it at any recent conventions,
so you may have to get it fansubbed... I highly recommend it.

Ninja Scroll had a bit of an effect on a friend of mine. I wouldn't say
he's hooked, but I think he has a lot more respect for japanese animation
now. (Watching it was an endless string of "Cool!"s and "WHOA!"s and
"HEY ERIC, YOU GOTTA SEE THIS"s.) It's good looking enough to hook
someone visually, it's got something resembling a coherent plot, and it's
got shock value to spare.

The manga only gets more agro after the six-part OVA stopped... =)

And, though it's got lots of humor, by the second half of the series it's not
_quite_ so light-hearted any more; i.e. it's conclusion is anything but
"funny" per-se. I'd _highly_ recommend seeing it if you can find it.

I started an old [no pun intended] 50+ year old housemate off with
Omoide Poroporo, Video Girl Ai, and Maison Ikkoku. Porco Rosso is another
good title. Just don't show them Roujin Z, or they may get the wrong
idea. ^_^

I absolutely LOVED BGC the first time I watched it... then I
had to go make the mistake of watching Blade Runner, whereas I got a
TOTAL reality check...
*sigh* After that, BGC was never quite the same.

not that i am defending or particularly *like* bgc (i do, though, i
think), but a lot of anime and japanese stories and perhaps even all
things literary are based off of other things. "nothing new under the
sun" and all that

but then again it could also depend on your definition of "ripping
off"

Good point... Much of it is ripped... Then again, some manga & anime
take elements of or pay tribute to other works. Example: Masamune
Shirow. His Guges and Master-slave mechs were influenced mostly by
Heinlein and previous mecha shows while most of his SWAT op techniques
were taken straight from the books (and inspired by a couple of
live-action movies whose names elude me...).
But Appleseed is a very original work upon itself. And in terms of
originality, the name Hayao Miyazaki seems to be screaming in my ears...
^_^
There's a fine line that seperates works that are inspired by other
media from works that plagiarize aspects of other media...

I think Blade Runner was what BGC wanted to be; I mean, the music at the very
opening of episode one is _straight_ Vangelis, as well as the cinematography of
the post-information-age urban jungle was almost a straight copy. However,
the music didn't _quite_ have the edge, and the visuals weren't quite sharp or
dark enough to make it over the hump. I don't blame the production staff of
the original BGC; I suspect that the show represented the state of the art at
the time.

I think that, _IF_ the people making the new BGC TV series wanted to, they
could pull it off now. However, as has been observed on the net, dark seems
like it's largely "out"; shows like Key the Metal Idol and Violinist of
Hamelin are getting passed over in favor of stuff like Toshinden and Saber
Marionette J. My hope is that things like BGC, the forthcoming Miyu TV series
(and maybe even Vampire Hunter) will represent a return to the real hosage
factor.

Why are you guys all ripping on BGC? It was what got me hooked.....sure it
isn't my drop dead favorite now, only because I've run into Ranma 1/2,
Urusei Yatsura, Kimagure Orange Road, and other light-hearted series, but
for its genre it's a great series. The music is second to none, I bought
both Hurricane Live videos so I could make audio tapes and .WAV files for
playing while I write this :)
