Information I really need, aside from general updates:
Dates.
Vertigo pack 30 contains a game called "Golgo 13: Riddle of Icarus". Is this
the same as one of the other NES games or is it a third game?
Did the game or anime come first for Makeruna Makendou?
What was Crayon Shin-chan game 3?
Valis anime. I want to know *more*. I want a copy, even. :-)
Information on Speed Racer game Japanese versions.
Information on that "Escape from Cyber City" game for CD-I. (Does it exist
in Japan? Does the arcade game?)
Info on the arcade Gundam game.
Which games started out as anime/manga, and which as games. And specifically,
which was Madara?
What characters those SD Banpresto games listed under "miscellaneous" use.
I heard of a "Yo-yo Battle" game which sounded like a Sukeban Deka game. Does
this game exist and what is it?
Anime-related Video Games [Last modified 7/31/98, posted 8/18/98]
This regular post lists the known games based on anime, manga, and sentai
(Japanese live-action superhero team) and related shows and movies. If both
the game and show are based on something else, such as Lodoss, I still count
it.
Anything which started as a game and was made into anime or manga later, I list
separately at the end. Japanese videogame magazines often serialize game-
based manga, which later gets published in collections like other manga; I
have no real way to find out what most of these are. I've listed what I know,
but they're only a fraction of what's out there.
I'm not listing computer games, even when a game was on a computer before
it was on a game machine. Please don't write to me about the omission.
DISCLAIMER: Because this list relies heavily on non-primary sources, I can't
vouch for their complete accuracy. Use this as a guide only. Thanks! Also,
a lot of the N/As are guesses--it's hard to prove something _doesn't_ exist.

*Compatibility*
The compatibility notes listed below mean the following:
Compatible: no compatibility problem.
Cosmetic: the games are compatible if you remove non-functional plastic
parts from your machine. If you want to avoid voiding your warranty, you can
buy "adapters" that just extend the cartridge slot.
Hardware: Requires a hardware modification to let your machine run games
from the wrong country.
Language: Requires a hardware modification to switch between different
country versions, but games won't necessarily refuse to run if you have the
"wrong" machine. (Usually, they switch Japanese/English languages if they
do anything unusual at all.) Of course, they _can_ refuse to run, and a
handful of Genesis/MD games act this way; I've listed this information for
Mega Drive games where it's known. (Sometimes an adaptor exists that can be
used instead of this switch.)
The method of building a language switch for the Game Gear or Sega Master
System is unknown.
Adaptor: self-explanatory.

* Sometimes you can play incompatible Playstation games by booting with a
game from the proper country and switching CDs afterwards, if you make the
machine think the drive is still closed. This often causes problems with the
music, and only works on early machines. There are other, more difficult,
swap tricks possible on later machines. You can replace the ROM in your
machine or get a special chip inserted to be able to play everything.
** Japanese 3DO machines contain a ROM with kanji characters, which American
machines don't; any game using it won't run on an American machine. This is
a rare case where games are "honestly" incompatible rather than because of a
company's marketing strategy. Luckily, the problem is rare (none of the games
in this list have it.)
*** I hadn't heard of the Sufami Turbo until I saw it on an anime video game
page. It seems to be an add-on to the Super Famicom. I _suspect_ it'll work
in a SNES, but I really don't know.

*The Games*
The game cartridges are listed in the following format:
SHOW
Game system, "Japanese Title", "American title" (if any),
ordering information (Company, order number), date, price in yen
(game type)
comments
Note: date is a recent addition and most of these games won't have one listed
until I can go through my reference material and get some information.
"Digital Comic"/"Adventure Game": This type of game is almost unknown in the
US (though I think it did start here, with "Infocomics"). It's basically a
semi-animated comic book/anime hybrid where the player chooses the next step
off of a menu. Think Snatcher. The amount of animation can vary greatly and
is generally much larger on modern systems.

*Games made into animation*
Sometimes the game comes first and the animation afterwards. There are lots
of these, too. Games made into manga, often serialized in game magazines, are
also very common. This list is currently _very_ incomplete. Information is
needed.

* Dragon Quest is the Japanese name, Dragon Warrior the US name. 13 episodes
of this were dubbed and broadcast briefly in the USA. There was a second
Dragon Quest TV show, which is obviously based on the games (it uses some of
the same music, for one) but I don't know on which ones.
** Yes, the Robert Woodhead who worked on Wizardry runs AnimEigo, and no, he
can't bring the anime to America without the permission of the US co-owners,
which he doesn't have. (Hey, I thought it was a creative idea when _I_ asked
it too.)
*** The manga for these games was translated, colored, and serialized in
Gamepro magazine for December 1990-November 1991. I have no idea what the
original titles of these games or manga were.
*4 There is an animated SF2 movie, and a prequel TV series. There are
several SF2 manga; one Japanese one was released in the USA, and another
(using mostly Cammy) was serialized in Game On! USA. (None of them are
connected to the earlier Malibu comic, or to the live-action American movie.)
The animation has been released in the US, but with changed music and cuts
(even the 'uncut' version contained a few cuts). In turn, the animated movie
was made into manga, which was also released in America. The TV series is
being released on video by Manga Entertainment, with changed opening and
closing sequences (even in the subtitled version).
*5 Released by AD Vision in the US. Samurai Shodown is dubbed, the others
subbed; Classmates is renamed End of Summer.
*6 For April Fools Day 1993 I did a fake "Valis OAV Synopsis", but have since
received several references to a real Valis OAV. It was supposedly released
1990 and may have been a limited edition only available through a contest.
Update: The February 1997 Anime V contains a bonus listing all the anime
ever released on video. Valis is _not_ in there, either as Valis or as
"Mugen Senshi Valis". Did they ever really make it?
*7 Released dubbed in the US by Viz. (or to be released, for Darkstalkers)
*8 Serialized in the US in Nintendo Power.
*9 Unrelated to the US cartoon.
*10 Some of this manga appeared in Game On! USA. Samurai Shodown had 7
chapters, Toshinden had the one-shot, and Street Fighter II Cammy had 6
chapters.
*11 Released in the US by Urban Vision.
*12 Released in the US by USMC. (USMC's web page says episode 1 of Gowcaiser
is dubbed and 2-3 are subtitled, which sounds sort of odd.)
*13 Released as First Loves and First Loves 2 in the US by Soft Cel.
*14 To be dubbed as Pokemon in the US in fall 1998.

The anime Super Famicom site is at

There is an anime Playstation game site (which is really about Japanese PSX
games in general) at http://www.aiai.com/~freddy/animepsx/ .
A page for Dragonball games is at

There is another at http://www.bayside.net/users/gokou/dbvgames/ .
Appendix: emulation
Video game emulators allow video games to be played on a PC or other computer
by simulating, in software, how the original machine's hardware runs. In
order to be able to run an emulator, the PC has to be many, many, times the
speed of the original--emulating the original's CPU may not be hard, but all of
the hardware in the machine, including the sound and graphics processors, has
to be emulated at the same time.
Video game emulators are probably many people's only hope for playing most of
the above games, if you're willing to stoop to a little piracy, since it's
illegal to have a ROM image of a game you don't own. It's fairly easy to find
lots of images on the net, though not all of them. It is also possible for
hackers to modify the ROM images to fan-translate the games, and a few games
have been translated this way. (Obviously, you can't download CD games off the
net; to run those you have to have a CD to put in your computer's CD drive.)
Systems up to the Super Famicom/SNES and Neo-Geo have been emulated. There
are Playstation and N64 emulators, but they are primitive and basically
useless if you just want to play the games.
It's beyond the scope of this FAQ to list all the emulators that exist.
Check out comp.emulators.game-consoles for more information.
Oh yeah, and if you want to play the Urusei Yatsura game for Famicom on
Nesticle, flip the mirroring. On fwnes, make sure it uses memory mapper 3.
