In case your memory needs refreshing, Mr. Tobor, private detective, was
in reality an android built by Professor Genius. His only real powers
(that I ever noticed, at least) were running very fast and the ability to
remotely control his detached limbs. When he !ran low on energy! he
recharged by smoking special cigarettes (no kidding).
Gawd, that was a long time ago. I'm not sure I remember it very well,
but I used to watch it *A LOT* when I was a kid.
As I remember, he was human but got fatally injured in a (car?)
accident, and had his brain put in the robot body. I don't remember the
cigarettes at all. He definitely had other powers; he could take on the
appearance of any other person, for example.
It was some time after I became an anime fan (mostly of Miyazaki) that I
realized that, since I had watched Astro Boy, Gigantor, and Tobor the
Eighth Man when I was a kid, I had been an anime fan all along but
hadn't known it :-).

Go to your local Tower Video if you have one. They are renting both
Astroboy and Tobor the 8th Man. Both of these are being packaged by
a company dedicated to restoring these old anime classics. Someone
else might have the info. If noone else posts it, I'll dig out my
copy of the first Astroboy tape and post the info for the company.

I remember 8th Man (it was the 1st anime that I really remember from
being a kid: especially when he got taken to pieces ...)
Created by Kazumasa Hirai & Jiro Kuwata, I bought a copy of
'Greatest Adventures of..., Vol 1' from 'Video Rarities.

I remember 'Eighth Man' with great fondness. I watched it when it was
aired in the early 60's. It was my first encounter with anime. (Astro
Boy was on too, but it was obviously kid stuff, so I avoided it.) I was
vaguely aware from the funny letters on the buildings that this was not
a US production, but I hardly cared. I was in love with Jenny...
To me, 'Eighth Man' represents a triumph of the human spirit. Though
cased in metal, he does not lose his humanity.
