Don't you mean Summer '98?
Anyways, it's all a plug for a new Voltron show this fall. It involves 13
new shows with 3D graphics included. "Voltron: The Third Dimention" starts
in Fall, but the commercials with Sprite make me skeptical.

teh ones in the Sprite commercial were using images from the original
animated series.
Check out

No kidding. Boy, was I surprised to find that Blade was only _19_. O_o
Arnold Kim
thought Blade was older than me
More violence (some of which caught me by surprise...just that I associate
to the "watered" down version so much)
A lot of scenes were cut in the Voltron version, but then again, Voltron in
its own, became its own identity.
AACK I hate trying to explain why I like Voltron for what it is and WHY i
like the original japanese anime as they are, even though WEP butchered it
in the dub formats.

Ah, memories of youth... who else remembers watching an anime show as a
kid? I remember when I was six, I saw the 1980s Astro Boy (which I still
like today, even considering how bad the dubbing was - it's been released
on video down here in Australia now). I also remember finding out about
Voltron a couple of years later. I didn't know anything about manga or
anime until I was twelve, when a Japanese friend of mine brought some
Dragon Ball manga to class, and things just went downhill from there :-)
Acutally, I watched a _lot_ of anime when I was a kid- Speed Racer,
Voltron, Robotech, Tranzor Z, Battle of the Planets, Great Mazinger,
Daimos, Getta Robo G, Macross:DYRL + Flashback, and more, all before age
12. And the thing is, I always remembered it being Japanese in origin.
Dunno how, maybe my mom told me while watching Speed Racer.^_^
I didn't go totally into fandom, though until Jan. '94 at age 16. A week
before it started with Ranma 1/2 korean videos, the fuse was lit by watching
my friend's copy of Project A-ko.

Without a doubt. It was Star Blazers, which I'd run home to see every
day after school when I was about 9...I think. It was so long ago. I
remember being so stoked when they were going to bring out a third

I started out watching Voltron and Thundercats at age.. 4 I believe, but I
didn't realize
that they were anime. The anime that got me hooked was the movie Devil
Hunter Yokho....the first one..which I saw in 5th grade....my mom let me
rent it from the video store...subtitled..I loved it.. she didn't but by
the time it was over I was hooked.
Recently I purchased Devil Hunter Yokho 2, 3, and 4-ever .... I'm still a
Yokho fan :-)
Lynn
i guess mines started back with Capt Harlock and moving on to Starblazers
and Voltron (robotech wasn't my thing as I got to see the original series of
Macross and Mospeada before they were butchered in Robotech - lucky me ^_^).
But if i were to sum it up, Voltron is my fave of all the "dubbed"
animations brought over to America.
Starblazers comes in a very close second
Thunderbirds 2086 is not far behind either.

I remember watching Speed Racer and Voltron when I was about five or six. (And
playing Voltron on the playground at school... and being such terrors doing it
that it was a banned activity. ^_^). Later, while living in Britain, I watched
some episodes of Robotech (and had seen it before, but don't remember it too
well) on the Super Channel (wonder if it still exists...)
I started watching anime with Akira, but Gunbuster was the one that really turned
me into a fan, back in '92.

The first anime that I _knew_ was Japanese was a few episodes of Robotech seen
at an sf convention. It hit the Canadian airwaves shortly after that, but
didn't last long -- probably in part because they alternated between the three
series, destroying the continuity. In any case, it still wasn't enough to get
me hooked on anime.
Much later, out of curiosity I watched a few episodes of DIC's Sailor Moon.
The awful voice-acting turned me off, but I had friends who watched it
regularly. So when I saw a fansub tape in a small store at a cheap price, I
picked it up, thinking my friends might be interested. Of course I had to
watch it first. It turned out to be the Sailor Moon R movie, and was much
better than DIC's dubbed episodes.
After that I started buying translated manga and even a few untranslated manga.
I found series that I liked, started renting the anime versions. From there I
went on to try other series, and started buying tapes, LDs, DVDs, resin figure
models, etc.
Damn, that SM fansub tape turned out to be a helluva lot more expensive than I
expected! ;-)

Well the characters, especially the human female characters had a definite Anime

I'm not. Just because it was done by a Japanese company, that doesn't
mean that it is anime. In an episode that I remember, the bad guys had
jerseys for a football game. Now one of the good guys went and got
jerseys... The state of New Jersey was on the jersey itself. Now please
explain to mne how a joke like that could be on an anime!
Jokes aren't the deciding factor in Anime. visually it's as Anime as Robotech or
Speed Racer.
The first anime I remember seeing was "Marine Boy". One of the most
popular "cartoons" on British tv of the late 60's/early 70's.
Even today i still find the theme tune running through my head.

necessarily mean that he thinks it _is_ anime.

best ever....
I think Voltron was next...Lion's series... But I DO remember the
multi-vehicle show too...does ANYBODY have tapes of that one?
I also remember watching Robotech at 6:00am weekday mornings around
'86-'87... I watched while I ate breakfast and became totally
entranced... Only remember Macross series though....
Too much info? Does ANYONE have any of the seventies/early eighties

I remember when Speed Racer was taken off the air for excessive

Nothing more in the anime style until... Star Blazers, still a

I can't say about Latin, but my mother, who was worn in Belgium, uses
the word "anime" when speaking French. Sounds pretty much the same as
when spoken in Japanese.
Random note on French: "Ikkoku" sounds exactly like a French word
meaning "cuckold". (I'm uncertain on the spelling of the French.)

Well, English comes from French, and French comes from Latin. There's
some root in there that means "to come to life" and it refers to how
anime (animation) brings pictures to life by moving them around at
certain fps. I'm no etymologist, but I took a year of French, and a
year of Japanese, and anime is a French word.
English was originally dervied from German, with influences of French and
Latin in Middle English, and Latin and Greek in Modern English. French is a
Romance language, like Spanish and Italian. German and English are on a
different language branch, and I can't remember what its called at the
moment. Both branches have basis in Latin.
BUT MY ALL-TIME FAVE SHOW WAS "FORCE FIVE"!!! IT WAS A

MONDAY HAD "GRANDIZER" (A.K.A GREAT MAZINGA!!!,BEST MECHA EVER!!!) MY
FAVORITE OF THE MECHA SHOWS!
TUESDAY HAD "STAR-DRAGON". THE GREAT THING ABOUT STAR-
DRAGON WAS THAT IT COULD CONVERT INTO TWO OTHER MECHAS,
STAR-ARROW & STAR POSEIDON.
WED. HAD THE "SPACESHIP" SHOW. I FORGOT WHAT IT WAS
ABOUT.
THURS.A "MECHA" SHOW. I FORGOT THAT TOO.
FRI. THE INCOMPROMABLE "GAI-KING"!!! GAI-KING HAD AN

ANOTHER GREAT THING ABOUT IT,THEY SHOWED THIS BACK-TO-

First, a short note: I was aware that the Romans spoke Latin. I've just
always been mildly amused that the langauge of Roman wasn't, say, Roman,
or Romano or some such. :)
And who are we? Good gods, man, we are rec.arts.anime. It's our _job_

universe, sowing discord amongst the uninitiated and unprotected masses
that are not us! We are valiant public servants, we are, we are.

You saw that too?! I remembered struggling to find that show in
enlgish but could only find it in French. The show intregued me but
it was so frustraighting not understanding what was being said. It
would have been the one motivating reason for me to learn french if
they kept it on.
BTW, first Anime was some show I think called the Green Forest (or at
least had heavy influence form them) which was on TVO. The REAL first
anime was Robotech.

So, can you still find Unico out there to rent or buy? I'm converting
my roommate over to Anime, and she used to love Unico, so that would be
a good starting place (though she loved Ranma so far . . . ) <EG>
Any info would be appreskated.
Now, if only Tsunami (from Tenchi Muyo) were real! :)

I have Betamax tapes of the first two films dubbed into English "Fantastic
Adventures of..." and "...Magic Island". My wife supposedly works with
someone who has an unsubbed copy of the THIRD Unico film, apparently made
after Dr. Tezuka's death. I've been trying to get together with this person
but no luck yet. If interested in the first 2 features though, let me know.

Hmm... It is interesting that almost all the shows that stick out in my
memmory are anime. I was born in 80 and the first movies I remeber seeing
were the unicos and Nausica: Valley of the Wind. Several cartoons stand
out as well. These include Robotech, Volron, and Mysterious Cities of
Gold. I didn't realize any of these were from Japan (In fact I had
assumed Cities of Gold was a Hispanic cartoon until I joined this
newsgroup tonight.), but I think it was early evidence that I was destined
to be an anime fan.

The Third tape was made in 89 and to the best of my knowledge has never
been translated into English commmercially. A fansubber out there
somewhere probably has done it, but I don't know who it would be.

The Adventures of the Little Koala was another anime that used to be on
there (on the Nick Jr. time slot). A lot of the children's stories on that
one series (forgot that name too...had stuff like Sleeping Beauty,
Rapunzel, etc) looked like anime, too.
I think the first one I ever saw was a cartoon called Dangaurd Ace. I was
like 5 or something and that was my favorite show. I still have tapes of it
(I treasure all of my old cartoons) I just recently found out about another
anime seems to be just like it.
Dammit, I forget that name, too.

Oh yeah! I used to watch that ALL the time!
First anime I ever saw being aware it was from Japan: Dragon Ball Z. Not
one of my fav's right now (I refuse to watch the Satan, I mean Saban dub),
but there's no denying a first love. ^_^
Meigo (Lost One)
aka. felis argenta
aka he of the ever-changing netname
Same here. Star Blazers kicks much ass. Also, I watched Voltron, Battle of
the Planets, and the Force 5's.
Hmm. Hard to say. It was either "Star Blazers" or "Speed Racer" reruns. But
I was young then. The first I watched every single day was "Battle of the
Planets."

Astroboy was my first exposure, although I didn't know what the term
'anime' meant until
a)I saw it mentioned in an ADQ story(Forget the title)
b)I went to university and joined the anime club!
I couldn't take my eyes off the screen - I was completely
captivated. It wasn't subbed OR dubbed - we had a live
voiceover expalning what was going on in general, not
trying to translate the dialog in detail.
First anime, period: Speed Racer reruns at age 3
First "not necessarily for kids" anime: Either Akira, Macross: DYRL, FotNS,
or Zillions, sometime in the late '80s
First anime seen with ful knowlege of the term "anime": Project A-ko, Jan.

My first Anime I saw was in the sometime around 1982-1985, the shows I
remember seeing are,
1. Starblazers
2. Robotech
3. Captain Harlock
4. Voltron
5. G-force <Battle of the Planets-Not sure which version>
6. Saber Rider and the star Sheriffs
I don't know in what order I saw these shows, But I do remember having
seen them. It was probally Starblazers and Captain Harlock.
But it was not until I saw Robotech at a friends house I started to
become more aware of anime, Now fade about 7-8 years, The year of 1992
maybe 1993, That is when I started to get the Sci-fi channel and again
was watching robotech and recording them.
Up to that point I had been a casual watcher, when ever at my friends
house we would watch a episode here and there, And some other titles I
recieved on my own television, I don't remember watching Robotech but at
his house, he told me that channel 44 KBHK San Francisco was showing it
but never saw it, I think by the time I saw it on his tapes, It was
already off the air.
But since then I have been collecting anime videos and CDs, like it was
the end of the world.
Sean Abbey,
P.S. I just wish they had finished the Robotech II: the sentinels
series, I have the video they edited the only episodes into, But I would
like to see more.

Midi, real audio, pictures and more!
I wished they had, too, until I read the plot treatments in the Robotech
Art 3 book. Seems ol' Carl was a decent story *adaptor*, but he was way
out of his league trying to write a 65-episode series from scratch. The
Sentinels was doomed, period. It's almost better this way, with the
story only finished in the McKinney novels, since McKinney was a better
writer (I realize that's damning with faint praise...) and cleaned up
some of Carl's groaners.
