Anime Weekend Atlanta '95- Post Event Report
--------------------------------------------
The weekend of October 27-29, 1995 saw the coming of Atlanta GA and the
Southeast US First Japanese Animation Festival, Anime Weekend Atlanta.
Here are a few tidbits of info on just what went on there:
Some General stats:
-------------------
Approximate number of Atttendee Memberships: 400
Number of Dealer's tables sold: 40 (sold out!) to appxoximately 15
dealers.
Number of hours of Anime video shown: approximately 210 (!) distributed
among 4 video rooms (3 main and one "overflow")
Number of screw-ups by the Hotel: Near infinite (too many to count by the
end of the weekend) ^_^;;;;;;;;;;;;
General staff notes:
--------------------
The roll-out of the new Gainax TV series, NEON GENESIS EVANGELION, went
over *amazingly* well at AWA! We wound up showing the subbed first
episode 5 or 6 times during the weekend to satisfy incessant demand!!
The audience reaction to our "theatre experience" video room was
positive as well. (Thanks to all who complimented us on this- it makes
those hard speaker-building hours worthwhile -G.) Especially popular were
the showings of Macross Plus episodes 2 and 4 in this environment.
Despite the problems with the hotel itself, the convention went
amazingly smoothly, at least to this staffer's eyes. Kudos go out to all
the volunteers and gofers on staff- especial thanks go to these staffers
who's efforts went way beyond the call of duty:
Larry Murray
Stan and Matt Page
Jamal Hassan
Mike ??? who took over as Gofer Director from Lauren mid-Saturday
While the Directors and staff chiefs expected to have to perform miracles
and such (it's part of the job description! ^_^), these folks came in and
did much to guarantee AWA's success, even though they didn't really have
to. Domo Arigato, and Omedetou!!
We also hope to be able to bring back the popular Doom/Descent Network
Game Room next year! Kudos to Lenny Burns and Brian Thompson for a fine job!
Contest Results:
----------------
Music Video Contest: There were winners in two categories:
Judges Pick- Best Video: Omohide Poro-Poro to Alphaville "Forever Young"
by Bobby "C-ko" Beaver (note: this is gonna be a hard one to beat! All
should check this out!!!)
Audience Favorite: The Nadia Trilogy: Nadia to Sarah Brighton by Mark
Hairston. (These
Video Contest Judges:
Daric "Jingoro" Koslowski
Jeff "Rich Lather" Tatarek
Matt "Leper Jim" Murray
Audience: A cast of thousands ^_^;;;;
As for the Amateur Film Contest: Since there was only one entry in the
Fan Parody and the Amateur Live-Action categories each, a decision was
made to *forward* both entries to *next year's* Amateur Vid contest, and
cancel the Amateur Vid awards for this year.
Costume Contest:
----------------
Whew, this *really* got complicated! The judges had to make up a few
categories for this one ^_^;;; :
Best Costume Construction: Lisa Hayden, Cyborg 003/001
Best Presentation: Messrs. O'Macon, Kubick and Skelton (sp^3?), Ryouga,
Mousse and Kuno from Ranma 1/2
Audience Favorite: Meredith Hodges, Sailor Moon (see, cheesecake shots
*do* get you somewhere ^_^;;;;;;;;;;;;;)
Judges Favorite: Neddy Hayden, Larva from VP Miyu
Attempt to Bribe Judges (POCKY!!! ^_^): Nickolas Ware, Genma Saotome
from Ranma 1/2
and last but certainly not least:
Grand Champion: Dorrie Sauls, Shinobu (from UY, transferring to Furinkan
HS- you had to see it!)
Kudos go to our esteemed panel of Judges for their toil and effort:
Robert Woodhead
Steve Harrison
Ed Hill
Anime Family Feud Game Show Results:
------------------------------------
After a pitched battle involving a additional "grudge round", the
Hibiki family defeated the Gamilons 165-131.
In all, despite the inevitable delays do to technical snafus (and the
horrendous driving weather that made Robert Woodhead several hours late),
AWA managed to go pretty much on schedule. We've learned a lot about what
the fans want (and don't want) from their con here, and we'll be sure to
put that new knowledge to work in planning the next "Three Days that will
Shake the World"- AWA '96 (TO BE HELD IN A BETTER HOTEL- WE PROMISE! ^_^)
Oh well, that's about all for now. I'm sure that if anyone has anything
else significant to add, they will do so without any more provocation. ^_^
Thanks, and see you all next year!!
Regards,
Gordon.
AWA '95 Tech Staff Director.
