Well, the 1992 Anime Favorites Poll is finally over, and I'd like to
thank everyone who voted for making it such a success. By "success",
I mean the fact that there were over 50 votes, pretty good for the first
running of such a poll, and that the results were interesting, in most
categories. Here's a complete rundown of the results, with some brief
commentary.
BTW, there are bound to be some errors in the results, since I'm not
an anime ultra-expert, and I can only count what you send me. I got
some pretty weird lookin' votes...
------------------------------------------------------------------------
I was a little surprised at how many of the top vote-getters in the
Favorite Movie category were older movies, at least more than a couple
years old. Apparently not too many movies have come out recently that
really grab our attention. For all the commentary on Silent Mobius, it
got one vote.

There was a slight problem with the subtitled production category, in that
I never specified whether to vote for for series or individual works. Since
people did both, I took the votes for individual works (say a certain UY
tape), and consolidated them with the votes for the entire series.
Most votes were for professional works, which will seem curious once you read
the results for "translating organization". The vote for Devil Hunter Yohko
was interesting, seeing as how the subbed version hasn't come out yet (or
is it a fan-subbed version?).

We must be talking to similar groups. I have yet to hear anything
really positive about Wings of Mayonnaise except the artwork. Of course,
if the movie has a gloomy or dark tendency, that might explain it; most of
the group of people I interact with prefer movies with good endings and
distinguishable heroes (albeit often heroes with flaws); OTOH, a lot of
the people on r.a.a seem to like either the bubbleheaded stuff like
Ranma, UY, etc, or dark, gloomy plotlines.
Sea Wasp
You guys *must* be talking to the wrong people:The anime club here in
Austin shows WoH an average of once a year. No, Sea Wasp, it's not
dark and gloomy, although it has its share of adversity, I actually
think it's rather uplifting(Thank you, David Brin :). My guess is
you've been talking to people who don't like stuff unless it's got
lots of explosions and babes in tight outfits. (Either that or
they've been watching unsubbed copies, I freely admit it's a *lot*
easier to enjoy subtitled.) Anyway, I voted for Nausicaa and UY2
but I'm not surprised WoH won.

Saru : "Ahem, ahem"
Yakumo: "Saru, do you believe me?"

"The most boring thing I have ever seen."

I dunno if they've had subbed copies or not. I know that the
explosions-and-babes isn't the answer -- 90% of them are female and
not interested in IJG's ("Independently jiggling gazongas", thanks
to whoever it was on this group who came up with that one).
Now, maybe the hero wasn't cute enough. THAT might be motivation,
since Char gets watched for hunk points, and the God-Warrior shows they like
all feature cute young men.
Anyway, I voted for Nausicaa and UY2
>but I'm not surprised WoH won.
I don't think I voted. I don't have an extensive enough experience
to vote in some of those categories.
Sea Wasp
Hey you did that fast! I think KOR won hands down because most
of December and January consisted of Orange Road threads.. I wonder how
Madoka would do 'off season'. (Of course she'd still win by a margin,
but maybe not 3 to 1 like this past one..)
As for the r.a.a polling, it's on it's way.. some people
cheated though, so I stopped compiling data for a while. (Madoka is
going to win.. despite heavy Kyoko Otonashi ballot stuffing).

Just for info... Here at P.A.C., there were two shows which have
received the biggest applauses in our two years of operation.
One is the WoH, the other one is the KOR movie. The attendences
for these two meetings were 80 and 110 respectively.

Although I didn't vote on the polls. Wings of Honneamaise is probably one of
my favorites. May be the people who voted were fans of the "serious subjects"
anime. Polls like these does not say anything about what kind of people voted
(except that they have great taste :p)
In any case, why would people waste effort stuffing ballot boxes any way.
Anime is entertaining, fun, and even educational, but it does not reduce
deficit, or improve health-care. Results are probably forgotten within a
month or so. I find it hard to believe people on the net are sneaking around,
breaking into other people's account, just so they could cheat on the voting.

Belle and the former Beast lived happily ever after, or so they thought.
The day after was plagued by a series of accidents. Mrs Potts received second
degree burns after pouring boiling water on herself. Lumiere was hospitalized
after he set himself on fire. The chef suffered a concussion after he struck
his head on the cutting board. And no one could find any silverware.
-- Medical Journal of the Techno-Discordians
I've actually gotten two kinds of reactions to "Wings":
- Those who think the movie is *really* good
- Those who think the movie was booooorrrrring...
Interestingly enough, the groups above also split into those who
understood the movie dialogue and those who didn't. Which groups
went with which is left as an exercise for the reader... :-)
This is a *very* dialogue-intensive movie with little external
action and a great deal of character exploration and development.
As such, if you don't understand what the 'talking heads' are
saying, there's really not much left to the movie...
If you haven't guessed which group *I* fall into by now, look
at the rating that I gave "Wings" in the Pocket Guide...

- The world. The *incredible* amounts of detail put into the Honneamisean
culture, history, and technology. From cars to kitchenware to
architecture to publicity posters and artistic murals, the world of

- The plot. The kind of plot Hollywood scriptwriters would sell their

showing you characters who are, above all, human. The kind of plot
that manages to be sublime and mundane, epic and humanistic, cautionary
and optimistic (and sometimes several at once).
- The animation. WINGS OF HONNEAMISE has some of the best flight/fight
sequences in anime (as discussed in another thread).
- The music... no, never mind, the music wasn't all that hot. But then

You are totally wrong, I'm afraid. :(
There are, indeed, many people who like this movie.
I personally think it is one of the best movies I've ever seen, and
that includes (gasp!) non-anime films. Ah, well.
There is a lot of character development, and I can see why people might not like
the movie, if they like clear cut heroes. Shiro is just an average lazy guy who
finds direction in his life slowly. I find the whole thing fascinating and yes, most definitely uplifting.
See it with a good script, and decide for yourself. _Every_ otaku I know, and
everyone else I have showed it to have enjoyed it. As always, your mileage may

Interesting. I read the whole Silmarillion, too, because of the detail
it gave Middle-Earth. I admit, that sounds like a very positive thing.

Oh-oh. Warning bells going off all over, here. This sounds like the
kind of comments given about "serious films" -- like Chariots of Fire or
Jacob's Ladder.
Anything artsy is automatically struggling for its life. Good
reviews with words like "sublime", "characters who are HUMAN", and so on,
are red flags to KEEP AWAY, DANGER WIL ROBINSON! This is a four alarm
snoozer!

CYNICISM ALERT!! CYNICISM ALERT!! CYNICISM ALERT!!
Somebody help me tie this guy to a chair so we can show him 72 straight
hours of Miyazaki films. :)
Seriously, I've never seen Chariots of Fire(and don't intend to) but
I wouldn't use the sort of language you mention to describe "Jacob's
Ladder." Something like "roller-coaster ride through Hell a.k.a
New York." would be closer. It does have "meaningful" bits but
they're not the be-all and end-all of the film.
And if you don't like stories where the characters are human, I can
only assume you're a big fan of such 3-dimensional people as
the ones in "Tale of Two Robots."
Remember:Death is just Nature's way of telling you to slow down.
This film is a true CINEMATIC masterpiece. Intelligent script, fascinating
world, beautiful art...if that's not enough, then I shudder to think what
WOULD be defined as good.
Darold "Godai" Higa of Ikkoku-kan
OOPS! Music, I forgot the music! Sakamoto did a beautiful job creating
music that is both familiar and foreign at the same time. I admired his
work on Last Emperor, and the BGM for this movie is simply INCREDIBLE!!!
Art=Boring? Mozart was pop music in his time! Shakespeare was the
Elizabethan version of TV! I find this criticism of "artistic" somewhat
mystifying. Is T+A the only reason for watching anime? Sigh. No wonder
Patlabor isn't that popular here...what a waste of a good plot.

Language of that sort was precisely what was used by several reviews
of the film, not to mention the rabid fans of it I encountered (I rated
it as the second-worst movie I had ever been to, and by far the most
gut-level annoying [number one was Highlander II: The Sickening... er,
QUICKENING])
>And if you don't like stories where the characters are human, I can
>only assume you're a big fan of such 3-dimensional people as

Depends on what you mean. Most reviews that mention "human" characters
mean "bundles of babbling neuroses".
I like heroes. I KNOW plenty of bundles of babbling neuroses. I know
a lot of ORDINARY types. Why should I waste my time watching MORE of them?

Wasp, I could remark about the same qualities in Gundam 0083 with regards
to seeing characters who are "human". Does this automatically relegate 0083
to the "four alarm snoozer" category? I think not. 0083 is some of the
best anime I have ever seen, yet I see many "human" characters and many
things that are "sublime". I liked these qualities of the show, as well as
the action.
Good writing and characterization (which appears to be something you find
boring) makes for a good movie as well; there is more to film/TV anime than
artwork, music, and body count. Stop judging a book by its cover, wasp.
> I'll have to get a copy someday.
Do that. Maybe after you have actually *seen* the film you can review it
with some degree of skill. Until then, restrain yourself from slamming a
film you have never seen. It doesn't present a positive picture of you.

Huh? I thought Patlabor was very popular among American anime fans,
at least as much as in Japan.
Also I don't think the quality of plot has anything to do with the
popularity/commercial success of an anime. Just look at how bad WoH
and Patlabor the Movie did at the theatres in Japan.
Wings of Honneamise 400 million yen (production cost 800 million)
Patlabor 100 million yen
Still they're two of the best anime movies, IMHO.

You know, I don't mean to be rude or anything, but why don't you
actually WATCH Wings of Honneamise before you engage in a lengthy
discussion of its merits?
And, for what it's worth, WoH is nothing at all like Jacob's
Ladder. Though, in terms of how "fast-paced" it is, Chariots of Fire
is not really all that bad a comparason. Of course, I thought
Chariots of Fire was a fantastic movie, too. (hmm... so is Jacob's
Ladder, but that's not important here).
If you watch anime for the T&A and blood&guts -- which, mind you,
is as good a reason as any -- you probably will be bored out of your
skull. If, on the other hand, you enjoy movies with an actual
_plot_, you might find WoH good.
I have said many times that, of all the animated films I have seen,
only Wings of Honneamise qualifies as a movie in its own right
(i.e., it would have been just as good "live" as animated).
(not to detract from Miyazaki)
This kind of is like the poll in 1936 that predicted Alf Landon would
beat Franklin Roosevelt in a landslide election. After Roosevelt won
by a landslide it was discovered that the poll was conducted by phone, where
most of the people who could afford phones(this was the great dpression)
were staunch Republicans, and those who weren't polled were strong Roosevelt
voters. I guess box office will continue to be the true measure of a movie's
popularity and the academy awards will be the critics favorites.
Oh, but WINGS also has chases, a big fight at the end, and even a second
or two of jiggling breasts...
>Wasp, I could remark about the same qualities in Gundam 0083 with regards

Dunno, haven't seen that one. My Gundam Guru said that the later Gundam
shows became knockoffs of the prior ones, without Newtypes, of course.
Depends on what one defines as "human" -- see my later post on the
subject.

My, my, defensive today, eh? I NEVER slammed WoH. I simply repeated
what I had heard about it, and commented on what I consider warning
signals for overly pretentious shows. Not once did I say "Wings of H is
BAD"; I did, however, express my surprise at the ratings because
"All my usually reliable sources say it's bad."

I will. I haven't discussed its merits or anything of the sort.
I repeated what was told to me, by usually reliable people, about the
movie. I then responded to semi-descriptive comments about the movie
with my opinion that they were the kinds of comments usually made about
movies I come to loathe.

Actually, it might be. I consider pacing to be a pretty damn
important part of a movie. CoF had no pacing, and JL had nondirectional
pacing, which adds up to slow, slow pacing. If WoH is as slow, believe
me, it's a snoozer even if the actual STORY is better than Casablanca.
> If you watch anime for the T&A and blood&guts -- which, mind you,
Not likely T&A if I'm watching a lot of Saint Seiya. Blood and
guts I can take or leave -- I want it there if it makes sense to have it
there, but if it's gratuitous that bothers me.

Well, what IS an "Actual Plot"?
I'm serious; I've heard this line a lot of times, but I've never
been quite clear on what people MEAN by "actual plot".

True. But popular != good. They're not opposites either, but there's
not a lot of relation between them. A good film *might* become popular,
but a popular film won't become good by sake of being popular.
Or do you think that ALLADIN was the best American film made in 1992?
It had the highest box-office.
Do you think that HOME ALONE and ET were the best movies ever made?
I still maintain my opinion that WINGS OF HONNEAMISE and OMOHIDE POROPORO
(which BTW had the bigges box-office of any Japanese film in the year it
was released) are the two best anime films ever made...
For me, I just never got attached to WoH because it left me
"unfulfilled" (for lack of a better word). Never could understand the
character Riquinni (sp?). But got to admit, the launch prep to
closing sequence are a "must see" for any anime fan.

>>What I like about WINGS OF HONNEAMISE:
>>- The world. The *incredible* amounts of detail put into the Honneamisean
>> culture, history, and technology. From cars to kitchenware to
>> architecture to publicity posters and artistic murals, the world of
>> Honneamise makes a coherent whole.
You took the words right out of my mouth there...
It was great how they developed almost EVERYTHING on this world
- Its a literary masterpiece as well as an animation masterpiece !!
This should be in Norton's anthology of world masterpieces !!
Notice we never see purely 'entertaining shows' here.
- They created its own culture, by god ! which includes :
- Religion
Details on how different people interpret religion & spirituality
-- realization struck me as how close it was it resembles real
life, and how similar to how we really ponder about it in real life.
- History (remember the game of CIVILIZATION ? The discovery of
Fire, Masonry, Construction, Bronze working, Iron working,
Theory of Gravity, Automobile, Flight, Nuclear Fission,
Labor Union, Democracy, etc ... -- Space Flight !!
- Architecture
Have you noticed on how their windows open DOWNWARDS instead of
how we usually push it upwards ?
- Fashion
Yes, they have formal dress, and normal dress.
- Philosophy
Compromise of the self against idealism. Self denial.
Their purpose of existence. The general wondered what his purpose
was. He found his own answer within. Shiro volunteered.
How do you interpret this ? His emotions & ideals ?
- Social structure
The unemployed exists, (I take it you don't consider Presidential Speeches
as interesting :), how people protest against government spending,
argue about the feasibility of such a multibillion dollar project,
i.e. 'Build bridges instead of space battleships'.
- Politics
Seems like a feudal/monarchic type of government, but people's
power seems to have control, i.e. possibility of large demonstrations,
etc.

Hey, thats one more thing I can add to my checklist on why I would
recommend WoH.
> Anything artsy is automatically struggling for its life. Good
You've got a point there. It doesn't automatically mean that it is popular
unfortunately. The general public wants to be entertained when they go
to the theatres. They want to turn off their minds most of the time.
So first impressions wouldn't be very nice for the person that expects
hardcore entertainment (i.e. the film focuses on what we want to see,
like comedy, action, and, as today's fad is,unfortunately,NO LAME SCENES
ALLOWED=boring, realistic scenes, or hyperromantic emotional scenes)
I didn't get my largest impact until I watched it for the 2nd and 3rd time.
(Although, I like romantic people & think X-Men & Batman are stupid &
hyperfantasized 3 year-olds' entertainment :) I don't mean to offend
the fans tho. :) :)
Just goes to show how fanatic people can be with their tastes :) :)
>>- The animation. WINGS OF HONNEAMISE has some of the best flight/fight
>> sequences in anime (as discussed in another thread).
Best flight, best camera panning, wide angle shooting, etc... you name it,
you find it !
> That's the only positive thing I've heard directly, except for
Well, there's now a couple more positive things on why it was #1,
and I didn't even get the chance to vote !!

This is the one of the big question of the film. Shirotsugh enters
the Space Force. Where do we go from here? He volunteers as the
pilot. Where do we go from here? He goes up for a quick spin among
the stars, while the planet is gearing for another war, perhaps the
biggest one yet. Where do we go from here?
Up. Out. To the stars.
Or back to drawing doodles in a cave wall. Our choice.

> Seems like a feudal/monarchic type of government, but people's

From what I could gather, it's a republicanized monarchy, not unlike
England. The prince (who is backing the Space Program) is a figurehead,
while the show is run from behind the scenes by the military-industrial
complex.
Not necessarily related to the specific subject of this thread, but
ever since I watched WINGS, this question has bothered me: Shirotsugh's
space capsule is ovoid in shape and studded with what I can only conclude
are sensors. It doesn't look like it has any kind of a reentry mechanism --
and we don't actually _see_ him come down....
So is Shiro going to remain in orbit until his life support gives
out? That he may have gone in to space to face certain death puts some spin
on the movie that wouldn't be there otherwise.

>From what I could gather, it's a republicanized monarchy, not unlike

Really? I read it as a well-disguised variant on late Meiji, or early Taisho
Japan: Popular protest, the beginnings of militarism, the control of the
government by an oligarchy (ie, the ministers that the General meets with late
into the show, gee, they look an awful lot like Genro) an imperial family
that maybe has both less control that it would appear from blank-faced
publicity, and more influence than would be supposed by the cynical. (that is,
the Imperial family interferes in affairs enough to surriptisiously facilitate
financing for the space force, but the last word in such affairs is a Privy
Council). And, of course, the government, the military, and the great
industrial companies are inextricably and corruptly intermixed.
Easy to confuse with an english model, as the Meiji/Taisho Japanese model
bears many resemblances to that of england between the Glorious Revolution(1688
and the American Revolution.

Well, as long as the bulk of the outer surface is built to withstand the
heat of reentry (ie, proper materials), the sensors don't really matter
because the capsule is only being used once.

Well, you don't necessarily have to be the one to clarify. Actually,
I was referring to the original voter as well just as I did with "Burning
Love" (KOR) in the song voting.
>>>"Saliva No Hana" (KOR)
>>That's "Salvia" not saliva.
>Uh, heh, heh, my fault. I corrected the "typo". I had heard that there
>was a anime song "Like a Flower of Saliva" and I thought that might be it.
>So what does "Salvia" mean?
Well, according to our resident songs expert, Miss Animerica, the full
translation is: Like a Salvia Flower, so "salvia" means "salvia" :-)

Thanx again for running the poll!
I just rechecked the total vote count. This gives Studio Pierrot four
votes for third place.

Compare the manga designs (from the Nannichuan translation) and the
anime. They are different. Takada took over character design around
ep 28 or so.

You shall not fight alone! The Raf picks up his now worn and dented keyboard
and begins swinging.
The best thing about Wings of Honneamise is that it has what few anime
but many real films have: serious characterization, realistic motivations,
and realistic interactions of characters. The characters don't make cute
sighs and they don't flash their tits. They aren't supermen and superwomen.
They have hopes, fears, and dreams. They fail and then pick themselves up
and try again. There are no "deux ex machina" powersuits that can save
everything with the touch of a button, just people battling technology
and human error and fears as they try to accomplish their dreams.
One of the best anime ever produced in my opinion. Why? Essentially because
it doesn't use the medium to make funny faces or breasts way out of
proportion to body size. Instead it takes the same same approach as a
real film (i.e. create a story with characters and put them through a
well developed plot) and it uses the animation to enhance this story.

I just rechecked the full vote again. It seems that third place was
Miyu with 5, so adding in these two votes gives Kyoko a two-way tie
for third. Also, Nausicaa only merited 6(?!?) votes.

Well, as they say, anime is for people who can't face real life (I
should talk!!!).
Well, if you can't take anime that portrays pretty real life, then it's
time to get out Voltron or similar (jodan, jodan).
Any serious fan (any worth talking to) will at least give a movie
described such a fair go.
But the dialogue reuires that you get a sub or script to read from.
(Sorry Rob, I can't find Julian's Post)...
Actually, you DO see him after he's landed. I remember people saying "Oh,
it's really depressing at the end to see him die out there with no way of
getting back." This simply isn't the Case. If you watch the ending
credits, and paying attention to the pictures behind the credits, you
will notice that his friends are greeting him after returning back to the
planet. (Can't remember the specific info on the Planet, though...)
I even remember there being a poster which I would LOVE to have... It was
a Wings poster and there was a type of Street Parade (Sort of after the
film) and they're having a Ticker-tape (sp?) parade for him. Nicely done.

That's right, once again, that's "Salvia", not "saliva". :P
christian gadeken responds:
> Well according to my Japanese dictionary, SA-RU-BI-A refers to the
> flower called "scarlet sage" so the title "Salvia no Hana no You ni"
> translates as "Like a Bloom of Scarlet Sage."
"Salvia" means any plant of the Salvia genus, garden planets of the
mint family, but especially the scarlet sage grown for its brilliant
red flowers.
I think i'll change my song file to read "Salvia [scarlet sage]" to
help keep this from coming up again.
What i'd like to know is what JENIINA is, if not a name. The closest
words i could find were jenna and genipa.
