Anime America saturday:
======================
didn't plan to go to AnAm 'coz i couldn't get my travel itinery finalized
early enough. being cheap, i decided to just go for the saturday programming.
it was a special day for me 'coz that's when i met my e-mail pal, Jim Ramberg,
and his girlfriend, Joanna, for the first time. I'd like to thank Jim for
being a natural leader and....so LOUD. if it wasn't for him and his amazing
social prowress, i wouldn't have met so many other interesting net people and
managed to get myself involved in some of the major actions at AX a week later.
briefly visited the dealer's room, and watched Sailor Moon episode 1 (another
first for me) in Jim's room. that's also the episode where Usagi's eyes turned
into hearts when tuxedo kamen appeared :-D .
then we saw the masquerade. walking out of the masquerade, we wandered around
the convention a bit more, wondering where to go next. all of a sudden,
somebody behind us started talking loudly...i turned around and saw a small,
puerto rican dude discussing anime with another guy (David Fleming, i think)
next to him. i took a look at his name tag and ARGH!!!! my jaw was wide open.
ENRIQUE CONTY!!!! holy smokes. i immediately turned back and went off behind
a pillar somewhere to catch my breath. then i took up the courage and walked
up to him.
"hello, you're enrik, right?"
"enrique ", he corrected me <in pure puertorican accent>
i held out my hand.
"hi, my name is linda..." <puzzled look on his face>
"chui..." <starting to ring a bell>
"friend of miho nishida?"
it was at this point that he looked at me as if i was a saint :-D
his mouth was wide open and he held my hand with BOTH HANDS!!!!!!
hahahahaha....i mean...gee...i'm only a friend of
miho nishida and i'm already getting this type of treatment. what if
i'm miho nishida herself? :-)
<please hitoshi, miho is not seeing any of this :-) >
shortly after that, i left the con <and missed the concert! oh well>
Anime Expo Friday:
=================
After the opening ceremonies, i took my brother to the dealer's room, ready
to empty my wallet on his gundam models. there i saw a booth called,
"manga no more" :-)
i walked up and saw Tonghyun Kim and David Mou. no way. these two are the
manga ohs??? didn't expect to run into net names so quickly.
<btw, what happened to UC herald 3. for some reason, i vaguely remember
TK mentioning that it'll be available at AX. :-) >
then i met up with jim ramberg, his gf, and got introduced to Alan Takahashi.
more surprises! nobody looked like the vague images i've assigned to their
respective userids. i guess this is just the beginning....to more shocks :-)
then i went into the (alt.)manga panel. i could not believe it. it was
alt.manga LIVE! i always thot people would be less "linguistically diverse"
in real life than in posts 'coz the latter allow them more time to play around
with words and organize their thots more...randomly <like what i'm attempting
to do now>
little did i know. those two (TK and DM) were too funny. i thoroughly enjoyed
that panel. we were later joined by hitoshi doi, who gave the famous lines:
"I don't watch anything that is not animated."
"... Except for news. Too bad that's not animated."
Mike Tatsugawa wrote:
> Well, there was even a Hitoshi Doi Fan Club which followed Hitoshi

he's right. the next panel we visited was the International Animation Fandom
panel hosted by Darold Higa and Michael Studte. then hitoshi walked in and
threw yet another line:
"how come it's the same people?" < pointing at the audience, us>
which sparked the beginning of the Hitoshi Doi fan club.
who else is in the hitoshi doi fan club: i think it's basically Paul Aoki,
Jim Ramberg, and i. there might've been others that i wasn't aware of. so if
anyone reading this vaguely recall being at the aforementioned two panels,
you automatically qualifies as a member of the fan club :-)
sad but true: i have to say that our hearts were broken when our idol went up
to the international fandom panel and said,
"i hate fan clubs."
but does that mean the hitoshi doi fan club will crumble?
of course
NOT!
i guess our fan club will just have to be more discreet in our activities :-)
Ryan Matthews wrote:
> -- No real @-party. That sucked. One was attempted, but it was spur of the

yeah. it was like, 4 or 5-ish when jim ramberg attempted to throw an @! party
at 7. kinda tight. he got hitoshi and enrique on board. so paul and i ran
around trying to round up as many net persons as we could find. we even drew
up a little flyer and stuck it at the message board. i guess it was a lame
attempt. but we tried.
i checked out the video room schedules and found that some of the
titles Miho recommended were being shown: Joker, Arslaan, Earthian, etc.
cool :-)
saw Joker before jim brought us to dinner at Lococo's. wrapped up supper
eating ice-cream at fenton's. got back at 8 pm, completely missed the ad-hoc
@! party. wonder what happened.
then it was the "meet the guests reception". jeff yang got a bunch of net
personalities in a round table with a tape recorder. the spur of the moment
was the revelation about Enrique's history of dating :-)
for some reason nobody mentioned this in their con reports, i guess it's
not intended for the general raa audience <i'm gonna get killed for this :-) >.
then i managed to get a seat at Jeff's round table. got interviewed as the
"token" female anime fan. i wonder if he's gonna publish any of the material.
:-P
went down to the game show. to my amazement, my pal paul aoki beat everybody
and got up there to compete with ryan gavigan.
Enrique Conty wrote:
> As it was, Gaver-sensei had no opposition from Paul Aoki

well. according to paul himself, he was not "aware" of the rules of jeopary
<and all other game shows for that matter>, and even tho he knew a lot of the
answers (or questions?) , he was "waiting" for his chance to speak. Only
halfway thru the game <when it was numerically impossible to beat ryan> that it
finally dawned on him and he started to "fight" for his chance. meanwhile,
enrique was sitting next to me, answering ALL of the questions (no comments on
the % of correctness :-). Enrique, you shoulda been up there! at least ryan
wouldn't have won without a sweat.
then we met up with Jeff Yang and grabbed a bite at the lounge where more
"interviewing" was done. after that, we "accidentally" stumbled upon the "H"
panel. my poor sister! she opened the door, peaked in, and gasped out loud.
that got a round of embarrassed laughter from the room. :-P from a distance,
all i could see was on the 47" screen was...well...digitized squares <AHEM>
it was midnight. i remember Arslaan was going to be shown in the video room.
hoping to get a good seat, we got there early....just to find the schedule
changed at the last minute - they're showing a live action flick instead by
one of the GoH's instead.
mad, i started vandalizing the posted schedule ...<ooops!..you didn't read
this :-) >...i scratched, "i waited all night to see this!!!" and drew an
arrow pointing to the entry that said "Arslaan".
all of a sudden, a guy next to me said, "i'll see what i can do."
what? oh. a staff. AHA! you people!
so i started whining, "how could you do that...blah blah blah"
still the same response, "i'll see what i can do.."
i continued bugging him, "so are you gonna change it...blah blah blah"
then my sister whispered in my ears, "oneesan.....remember i said there's
a guy carrying knives around on his belt? ...he's..."
<GASP!>
OOOOOPPPPSSSS!!!!!!
i changed my paradigm in a fraction of a second.
"ah...ha ha...that's ok...thanks, eh...", i said to the guy.
we left the scene as quickly as we could.
hey. i'm not a wimp. it's just that my aikido is not good enough to handle
weapons. yet. :-)
Anime Expo Saturday:
===================
we started off with dim sum, of course. all stuffed, we staggered to the
magical girls panel <being members of a certain fan club, this panel is a MUST>
... and had to sit thru another episode of sailor moon. <oops! i didn't
say that :-) >
then it was on to the kitty panel, where we filled out questionaires and had
high hopes of getting some cels. :-\
we were later informed that our names got called out during the "lucky draw",
but we weren't there to claim our prizes. >-(
then....it was time for...the rescheduled ARSLAAN! haha.
Albert Wang wrote:
> BTW, To Linda Chiu -> Arslan was shown the next day. Hope you were there
> to catch it. :)
caught it. thanks. even tho jim scheduled dinner at 6.
now i can tell miho what i think about daryuun :-)
finally got to the restaurant at 7, when everybody was already
having their main course.
Alan Takahashi wrote:
> > let's hope the photos are good (* Especially the dinner "shot" *
> I wanna P-chan shot!!! :-) :-)
i wonder how many of those "P-chan shots" exist. i remember p-chan and i
"posed" about 3 times. so i guess there are at least 3. my sister got one,
jim ramberg got one, and i think pascal janin also got one. i gotta see them!
then we rolled back to the convention centre, where we were hit by a super long
lineup for the masquerade. the masquerade itself was interesting, tho there
were some "short breaks" in between. those "short breaks", however, were made
interesting by the fun people around me. you know who you are. thanks.
tried to look for parties on the 4th floor around 11. i guess it was still too
early for anything. having younger siblings, i had to go home early. i guess
this is where a hotel room would come in handy. i'll make sure i do that next
year.
Anime Expo Sunday:
=================
I MISSED SHOUJO SUNDAY!!!! >-( !!!!!
dammit. i guess the only problem i have with AX is the lack of TV programming
being shown in video rooms. i mean...well...it would be nice if there were
video rooms 4 and 5, which would've shown the tv tracks. then i would've
driven from lafayette at 7 am in the morning just to catch tokyo babylon :-)
therefore, i missed titles such as Sequence, Earthian I&II, and Koko wa
Greenwoon #6.
i did manage to catch greenwood 3-5 in the other video rooms. thanks to
the person who planned those showings.
dropped by the Gundam panel. i guess jeff okamoto fell ill, 'coz TK was
hosting the panel. how was it? we were too hungry to stay, we headed out for
lunch instead.
after lunch, we went into the art auction and had lots of laughs. Akane+PChan
cel went for $215! Ranma Chan cel went for $230. i'm amazed. where did
people get all that money? they were crazy enough to bid for a 3D squirrel
cel <sold at $4!>. not to mention "The Bag"!
never managed to stay till the closing ceremonies, as we made plans to visit
J town and crissy fields that evening.
as a wrap up to this incredibly long and curiously content-free post, i'd like
to give thanks to Paul Aoki, Jim Ramberg, Alan Takahashi, Enrique Conty,
Hitoshi Doi, Ryan Gavigan, and Pascal Janin, and others whom i have met at AX.
now i can read your posts on raa, recall what you look like, and SNICKER. :-)
It's also known as Tonghyun and Dave's Excellent Table. :-) I wonder
if Manga no Mori people heard about our table. :-)
>i walked up and saw Tonghyun Kim and David Mou. no way. these two are the
>manga ohs??? didn't expect to run into net names so quickly.
What did you expect us to look like? :-) Monsters with 3 heads and 6
arms? :-)
><btw, what happened to UC herald 3. for some reason, i vaguely remember
>TK mentioning that it'll be available at AX. :-) >
Well, UCH 3 has been delayed by a month. So it'll be available by
early August.
Too many things to do, not enough time... :(

NOT alt.manga. Dave and I never think twice about things we post on
alt.manga.

If Ricky Chau had been there, it would have been crazier. Unfortunately,
Ricky was working in the video room at that time.

Don't worry. There will be THE Hitoshi Doi panel at Anime Expo 94.
Stay tuned. :-)
>hey. i'm not a wimp. it's just that my aikido is not good enough to handle

Nah, mere martial arts cannot defeat 'Higeki no Alberto'. :-) It was
Albert Wang who carried the dreaded knives throughout the day.
>dropped by the Gundam panel. i guess jeff okamoto fell ill, 'coz TK was

Jeff worked too hard and got sick. So Matt Clark and I had to run
the panel for him. We bashed V Gundam most of the time. :-)

Actually, you should blame Jeff Okamoto for this. *He's* the one who
stopped us, and waved Jeff Yang over to meet the "famous group of
net personalities". Funny how it seemed that I was always the first
one to get the next question... :-)

FINALLY!! Someone did notice! ^_^ Shojo Sunday will become a regular
feature at future Expo's, and if I can get the theatre crew to play
along, it will also infect the theatre track as well. What better
way to wake up on a sunday morning than to long, talky, drawn out melodramas
with themes of romance and teenage homosexuality. :-)
As to running the broadcast track downstairs as well, I'm seriously
looking into doing this. Whether or not we do this will rely on
the amount of space video theatres have to work with. We definitely
want to give every guest as much anime exposure as we can conceivably
fit into the time allotted.
One further note as pertains to Expo '94. We have always been
painfully aware of the limitations creating a "theatre" out of
convention rooms, i.e. the ceilings are low, so the people in front
block the subtitles from the people behind them and the circulation is
usually inadequate. Rest assured that we will try every way imaginable to fix
this problem once we pick the next convention site and we already have
half a dozen different ideas to experiment with.
Hope to see you all back there next year!
