If any of you know any similarities between the Record
of the Lodoss War to AD&D. Please e-mail it to me or
follow this up. My friend is a big fan of this anime
and when he brought it over to watch my roomate made
some observations of its similarity to Dragonlance.
These comparisons aggrivated him a lotAnyway, have fun
with it, they do not have to be totally serious just
as long as they are pseudo-true (well maybe not).
Remember this is to aggrivate someone so have fun.
Thanks.

They should be somewhat similar because I think the idea for Lodoss War
was based on D&D, not AD&D. The characters are the original classes that
could be chosen from D&D: elf, dwarf, fighter, cleric, mage, thief. And
the dragons' colors correspond to evil dragons.

ok, I'll re-post this again.
---------------------
At first, Lodoss re-play scenario 1 and 2 were played by D&D rules.
however, from the third scenario and on, (because of conflict with
rights with TSR), they made the Lodoss RPG and played.
at this point, the computer RPG have already been out, so they used the
Computer game rules as official Lodoss RPG rules. Around this time,
the first novel of Lodoss came out.
As a result of the novel, the popularity of Lodoss wars skyrocketed,
and came to be made into anime. Lodoss RPG have become very popular,
along with Sword World RPG, and it surpassed TSR's D&D in terms of
popularity in Japan. (although Lodoss RPG have a lesser developed
system, IMHO)
Funny thing is, if TSR haven't complained about the rights when
publishing Lodoss re-play one, then Lodoss RPG would have never been
formed, and TSR would have stayed as the most popular RPG ^^;

Well, I don't know if you know this or not(I'm sure mos of
you do), but Record of Lodoss Wars was based on adventures
and the Campaign that the creators of RLW played in their
AD&D game and they wrote novels then went to OVA. You
may notice, at the end of the opening sequence, the frame
with the multi-headed dragon behind the stone pedestal
(dais???), that scene was adapted from Clyde Coldwells'
painting for the Dragon Lance Saga(with Laurana chained to
the dais with two Draconians, which didn't actually turned
up in the novels), just a passing thought.
I felt a certain enchanting magic and feel from this
saga, much like something I felt when I first read
the Chronicles and Tolkien's War of the Rings.
I loved it. Other than that RLW is somewhat of
a typical AD&D world(remember Dragonlance did
not have Dark skinned elves (drow) and all their
magicians were either White, Black or Red
and that guy(can't remember his name) was brown
robed.
On to shallower things....
Similarities between RLW and a typical AD&D adventure:
-Started from the same system(D&D)
-RLW meets the basic template required to make a
successful adventuring party: =)
o The brainless fighter(Well Parn's not that brainless)
o The serious and sad mage
o Geeky, scholarly Clerics with bad hair do's
o Deedlit which qualifies for 3 things:
1. Elf(every party should have an elf ;o )
2. Backup Magic-user
3. Alluring Fantasy Female(no offense ;) )
o Grumpy old Dwarf with a battle axe 8-o :}
o the Thief with hair-brained name(Wood-chuck)
-Has voluptuos Dark-Elf woman in garb designed
more to make people drool than to be anything practical.
-Foolish, and unwise Monarchs
-The required Dungeon Fodder(goblins, kobolds, etc..)
-A dark and evil lord/lady
-Somebody named The Black Knight
so what more could you ask for??? 1:-) %^)
I do like RLW alot, can't wait for the rest to arrive at the
stores....

What's a .signature file????
This last claim is highly disputable, and has in fact been argued over
before.
[putative similarities deleted]

If you want, started out at 0'th level and worked his way up; one wonders
in most fantasy contexts where all these N'th level characters backgrounds
are...
> o The serious and sad mage
> o Geeky, scholarly Clerics with bad hair do's
*sigh*
> o Deedlit which qualifies for 3 things:
> 1. Elf(every party should have an elf ;o )
Not necessarily....
> 2. Backup Magic-user
Call it shaman. =)
> 3. Alluring Fantasy Female(no offense ;) )
Alluring, yes....
> o Grumpy old Dwarf with a battle axe 8-o :}
> o the Thief with hair-brained name(Wood-chuck)
whatever.
>-Has voluptuos Dark-Elf woman in garb designed

Well, I'm not going to complain too stridently. Form follows function...
>-Foolish, and unwise Monarchs
Since when?
>-The required Dungeon Fodder(goblins, kobolds, etc..)
>-A dark and evil lord/lady
>-Somebody named The Black Knight
Ashuram is a slightly different kettle of fish than the generic black knight...
On the whole, one of the reasons I liked RoLW so much was that, although you
had some "typical" fantasy elements, you had a rather _atypical_ usage of
them. IMHO, Lodoss managed to get to the top of the high-fantasy pyramid,
which is territory that is rarely (if ever) covered these days. Certainly,
stuff like Dragonlance (which I read and liked reasonably well) cannot be
called "high" fantasy to any large degree. While higher is not necessarily
better, Lodoss has both the altitude and the quality to have become both my
favorite fantasy piece and my favorite anime of all time.

Umm.....as to the "rumors" of a second series, they are out of date. With
Kadokawa's arrest on drug charges and the attendant fragdown of Kadokawa
Kaisha (?) Lodoss II the anime fell by the wayside. HOWEVER, the Lodoss II
radio drama is going through quite nicely, with at least the first three
volumes out on CD (with complete libretto! YES!)

Actually, at the end of the opening sequence, that isn't a mutil-headed
dragon in the background, it's actually the five ancient dragons that
sleep under Lodoss(and Marmo). The gold one is Mycenm, the black is Narse
and the red is Shooting Star....the other two I don't think are named in
the series, but I could be wrong....And the novels that Izubushi used to
create the characters were indeed based on AD&D...
