Minmei in WCST Nethack Spoilers

While flipping through the official hardcopy of the WCST NetHack 3.0
Spoilers version 7.0, and looking at the monsters' special attacks,
on page 34, I noticed "charm," the nymph's attack. Hmm. that drawing
sure looks familiar...
It's Lynn Minmei's backside as she takes a shower in the Macross movie.
That drawing can be found in the "This is Animation's Macross" book and in
the Macross Gold Book!
Yes! One of the most classic anime characters can be found in one of the
most classic computer RPGs!

You're right. Actully, depending on what you consider "canon," there may be
five parts to Robotech. (Macross Saga, Southern Cross, The New
Generation/Mospeada, Robotech II: The Sentinels, and Ballantine Books'
conclusion to the series, "The End of the Circle," which may or may not be
related to the rumored "Robotech III: The Odyssey."
But only the first three parts were ever shown on television (and that 90 min
Macross tv special, I think) and that was what I meant. A lot less people
have heard of Sentinels than have heard of Robotech.
(Besides, Robotech II and Robotech III aren't part of Robotech, they are
sequels. So nyah. :)

Robotech II was never completed, and never part of the original Robotech. As
a result Robotech is considered to have 3 parts.

A local 'cult' film house, Drexel North, has announced an Anime week
starting this week. They are showing multiple showings of the following films:
Vampire Hunter D
Fist of the North Star
Lensman
The Castle of Cagliiostro
Robot Carnival
Akira
Twilight of the Cockroaches
Warriors of the Wind.
Interesting notes about the week's showings:
1. Fist of the North Star and Akira are being tagged as too violent for
kids. Warriors of the Wind is being tagged as 'Bring the kids'.
2. Akira is listed as 'First Time in Japanese'.
3. Vampire Hunter D is being advertised as being the second official
screening in the United States.
4. Prices are normal for the theater ($5.50 adults, $3.50 kids, $4.50
students with ids and $3.50 for matinee showings).
5. Warriors of the Wind is only showing two times - Sat and Sun
afternoon. North Star and Castle are showing 4 times. The
rest are all showing 3 times each.

Cross, and Mospeada shows. The "Robotech II: The Sentinels" (not to be confused
with "Macross II" was the brainchild of Carl Macek, and you know how much

I called the theater, no mention of Akira playing in Japanese was made. As
for a large population - I don't know what large means.
Oh - I forgot to mention one thing. They are running a special ticket sell
where you can buy 4 tickets for less than 3 individual Adult tickets or less
than 4 student with ID tickets. Since there are 8 movies, it means that
one could, for less than $30, see all of the movies. That isn't too bad.

I keep hearing y'all saying this, and it strikes me that when "Super
Dimension Century Orguss" came out way back when, we were told by All
The Reputable Sources that it was the third part of the Super Dimension
Trilogy (part 1 being Macross and part 2 being Southern Cross).
This is why we all had heart attacks years ago, when Macek basically
said "Uh, well, see, they wanted $500,000 for just the RIGHTS to
Orguss, so we bought Mospeada instead."
Then again, maybe I'm just gettin' old and my memory is going on me.

Having seen both the Japanese language version of Akira and the English
language version I can say for certain that the Japanese version was better.
I think that the English version was cut in places and some of the dialogue
seemed to have been changed. In any case, although the subtitles are a bit of
a pain to read at times the better version of the film more than makes up for
it.

Orguss was the second ``Super Dimension'' show (Macross was the first), and

And I am glad Macek didn't get Orgus, because they would have had to
*seriously* rewrite major portions of the storyline just to get it onto

the complex relationships, like Kei and Athena or the Mhoohm-Kei-Mimsy-
Slea mess :-).

Yeah, this was the hole in the logic -- what the hell does Macross
have to do with Orguss? I kept thinking that maybe Orguss was both a
prequel and a sequel - the skyhook gets built and the battle over it
takes place *before* the Macross crashes, maybe? Who knows. I was
still a wee little drip in my senior year of H.S. or first year of
college when Orguss came out -- translations were nonexistant back
then.

Some of us have been out of the anime game for a few years. And some
of us don't get the Playboy Channel. These rumours were flying around
when I was in high school; I'm 25 now.

Christ! It wasn't supposed to IMPRESS you. I was pointing out that
as early as 1984, the Japanese were trying to interest the American
market; in fact, anyone they could FIND who had an interest. I was
17, and there's this guy on the other end who's half a world away and
twice my age asking ME if I want to buy the N.American rights. Talk
about a hoot and a half. But it started tons of rumours at the time,
when I'd show people this flyer and they'd go "wow, it must exist!!!".
I used to be severly into anime way back when. I still have my old
tapes of the Galaxy Express films, the Yamato stuff, assorted episodes
of UY, Urashiman, Galatt, Gorg, Orguss, etc. I remember seeing the
Macek "Macross" pilot in english at LACon in '84. Plenty of others
probably do too, but I drifted away from it when the local Boston fan
politics (and in general the east-cost fan politics) became too much;
does anyone even remember people like Rob Fenelon, Ardith Carlton,
Brian Cirulnick (who did a wonderful 45-minute Yamato OAV, basically), the
Trelaina APA..? AnimEigo, US Renditions, and Streamline are VERY
new to me, and possibly to others as well. Hell, I was in my local
video store and nearly had a heart attack when I saw LENSMAN for rent.
I had no idea that Orguss being dubbed had been discussed.
Whatever. I'll stop before I babble more. :)

This is most likely the subtitle print that Macek was talking about
recently... In the UK oyu can buy Akira on video either dubbed (a la
Streamline) or subtitled... It seems he might have finally gotten the
msg that a subtitled job would be preferred by some people..

Actually the Subbed version showing ISNT done by Streamline... As a
matter of fact it is more acurate then the dubbed version for sale. The
Subtitled version of D that is showing IS Streamlines version and it isnt
accurate <As usual for Uncle Carl>. It gives you the Gist of what is going
on and thats about it.

Its been a long time since I watched this, so I might misremember
some info.
Orguss was apart of the Super Dimensional anthologies.
In a possible future earth, a dimensional bomb was made as
a final option to defend a space elevator. Two soldiers (the
main character's name I think was "Kei") were defending the elevator.
As enemy forces closed in, they manually activated the bomb.
The dimensional explosion rippled through the dimensions,
causing various realities to phase in out with one another on the
planet.
Kei joined up with some aliens (forget what they called themselves)
and served as one of their fighters. Moohm (or Mome) is an android/robot
who has a crush on Kei (some would say love).
After much adventures, Kei and the other soldier meet up to reactivate
the dimensional bomb (the dimensional instability was going to destroy
the planet). In the assault, to get to the dimensional bomb, Moohm
dies. She was defending Mihmsy (sp?) (another character who would take
too long to describe) by powering a weapon with her own life/power.
A distraught Kei finds her body and takes it with him when he goes
to the space elevator. He sends Moohm's body into space. For the
ending (I will attach a slight spoiler warning)...
Imagine someone with a wish of ultimate omnipotence saying,
"I wish we live happily ever after"
The dimensional bomb energies rippled across the realities the second
and final time...

encompasses and the relationships between Macross to both.

BUT, you have to agree that the Japanese dubs are far more faithful to
original dialogue than anything the american companies did at the time
(see: WotW, Windaria, Robotech Movie, etc. etc.)... I prefer the
japanese dubs of Megazone 23 II, Macross and Gallforce dub over any bad
attempt by a company with an ego-maniac as director.
Oh, btw., Akira was better than average (if I'd liked the movie it
would have been bearable)...
