I picked up November's Animage today (because it mentioned Patlabor Movie 2
on the cover). Much to my amazement Nausicaa is no longer number one in
their character poll!!

Nausicaa has 380 votes, Nadia 382 votes and *drum roll* Mizuno Ami has 586
votes!! [That's Sailor Mercury for those who haven't followed the Sailor Girl
explosion] Sailor Moon comes in fifth with only 197 votes...

Michael
[No the Patlabor section wasn't very good, obviously to early for any real
information... *sigh* ...but the anime songbook was interesting...]

AAAAAAAARRRRRRRGGGGGGGHHHHHH!!!!!!

[Dennis Leary impersonation:]

What is it with this Sailor Moon stuff?
Suddenly a program that I can't take seriously goes to the top of the carts.
Shows that one thing stays the same wherever you are: PEOPLE HAVE NO TASTE!!

I don't want any more Sailor Moon. I want Nausicaa. I want 10 Nausicaa
movies, I want 50 volumes of Nausicaa manga, I want a 300-episode
Nausicaa TV show, and I want to see that stupid cat Luna AFTER he's had
an experience with the business end of a STEAMROLLER!

I have two words for Sailor Moon: Wonder Bimbo.
I have three words for Sailor Senshi: Cheerleaders from Hell.

I think you hear me knocking, Sailors.
And I think I'm coming in.
And I'm bringing an Ohmu stampede with me.

<SLAM!>

P.S. Sprinkle with smileys al gusto, and serve while still smoldering. B-)

Out of curiosity, where was Minky Momo this month? In October (and I'm
doing this from memory as I only glanced at it), Nausicaa was #1,
somebody from Dragonball Z was #2, Sailor Mercury was #3...

Minky Momo was #7 ahead of Sailor Moon, Kyoko (Maison Ikkoku), Akane
*and* Ranma (Ranma 1/2), Madoka (Orange Road) and a bunch of others...

(Personally, I wouldn't have rated her so high, but there's no
accounting for taste... :-) :-))

I havn't seen the Sailor Moon series yet, but just going over what notes
I have, it looks like Ami (Sailor Mercury) came in on the eight episode
and has turned out to be the most popular character even though she isn't
the lead. Can anyone familiar with the series tell me why?

The latest information I have from Tokyo is that Minky Momo is off the air.
Can anyone confirm this? There was a report here in r.a.a that the latest
season was not as good as the earlier shows, but that's all that I've seen
posted.

Considering that Nausicaa was written almost 10 years ago, and the movie
is over 8 years old... and considering the short attention span and
constant new movies and shows in Japan... the fact that Nausicaa is still
even remember, let alone always vying for the top few spots, is great.

After all Luna has to go through with 'guiding' Usagi-chan and the
rest, you want to put her (or is that him?) under the business
end of a *steamroller*??? Where's your sense of justice??? :-) :-) :-)

Truth be told, I've been having a *baaaaad* couple of months, and
Sailor Moon is *just* the thing I need to unwind. Nausicaa would be
a little too intense just now...

OK, here is a brief description of the two characters:

Sailor Moon
Usagi Tsukino is a quirky junior high school student who is
a *terrible* student, who has a loud voice and who breaks
into tears at the slightest provocation. Her personality
doesn't change when she is Sailor Moon.

[BTW, when she breaks into tears...she does it with gusto.
As in 'wailing loudly'...]

Sailor Mercury
Ami Mizuno is a quiet junior high school student who is a
classic overachiever. Usagi calls her a "genius girl", and
that's not an exaggeration. Ami-chan is always polite and
courteous, though she *does* have the tendency to study alot.
Ami-chan is a bit lonely...being so smart puts a distance
between herself and her other classmates.

Usagi-chan is always trying to teach Ami-chan how to have fun...

Of course, both are very cute, though some have said that Ami-chan
is cuter (I disagree...).

Rei Hino (Sailor Mars) is more like Usagi-chan than she cares to
admit, and I don't know much about Makoto-chan (Sailor Jupiter),
except that she's Sailor Moon's #1 fan... :-)

Does this help, or did I just confuse you more? :-)

Well, I was one person who was expressing disappointment in the new
Minky Momo season (though I've seen only about 5 from the 1st season).
Are you referring to me?

I'm still playing catch-up on Minky Momo episodes, but I do know
that Minky Momo has been broadcast up through the end of September.
Beyond that, I don't know...

That's the answer I have been getting from others as well. Ami likes to
study, and is polite. I assume most S_Moon fans are of school or college
age, and someone like Ami is a delight.

Well, then this letter should hearten you. This was written while
"Sailor Moon" was in hiatus, and was translated and forwarded to
me by someone who knows of my interest in Sailor Moon... :-)

I tweaked this a little so it would sound better in English, so it
isn't an *exact* translation. My tweaking appears in []...

I've omitted the name, since it probably isn't relevant... :-)

From the Friday (Oct. 16, 1992) issue of the Yomiuri Shinbun:

Letters to the editor
---------------------

"Don't suspend the SAILOR MOON [TV series]. I watch
'Bishojo Senshi Sailor Moon' (TV Asahi, Saturday)
with my 5 year old daughter.

Although it is a classic young girl manga, it
contains a present-day development, such as
transformation into a SENSHI.

Disappointed that its recent absence from the screen
is continuing.

We request for [reconsideration of the hiatus]."

Is this verified in the series???

And in the shots in Animage she looks like a cross between young Yawara
and a "female" Akane (Ranma 1/2).

I'm not surprised she's a hit.
