Well, as those Olympic guys go around hanging medals around the necks of their
favorite champions, it's time for us on rec.arts.anime to honor our big
winners. Yes, the 2nd Annual Anime Favorites Poll has come to a close, and
here come the results!

It's been an interesting poll. Several races were contested right down to
wire, and there were several utter blowouts. The biggest lesson this poll
has told me is that, if you want to be popular, you better be visible. The
biggest vote getters tended to be anime that have received professional
treatments in the US (or well-distributed fan-subs), and creators who have
appeared or are going to appear at conventions.

I've tried to be the best Pollster I can be, but no-one's perfect. As many
of you know, I asked for corrections when people misunderstood categories,
but sometimes when people vote for things I've never heard of, incorrect
votes creep in anyway. I'm counting on people to correct me, as well as to
fill in the blanks where people voted for "whoever did so-and-so".

Here are the final returns!

The Favorite Movie category was a bit surprising. Last year, when Wings of
Honnamise won, a few discontented souls actually suspected ballot-box
stuffing. So I was almost relieved when the early favorite was the KOR
movie. Well, time went by, and it came down to an exciting five-way race
to the finish. Guess who won? I don't know if this will quiet the critics
or incite them...

Well, once again, the Single OAV category didn't really work. First, many
people seem to think you're not allowed to vote for episodes of series,
despite my occasional reminders to the contrary. Maybe I should ditch the
word "single", which is only there to tell you to narrow your vote to one
item. Also, what to do when American companies take two or more OAVs and
repackage them under one name, such as "Desperately Seeking Shampoo"? I
decided I had to allow it, partly because I never said you couldn't vote
that way, partly because I couldn't of a simple rule that said otherwise.
Oh, well. I really don't want to throw this category away...

Someone replied to the OAV Series category with "Yeah, like BGC isn't going
to win." Well, I hate to disappoint him, but the old standard had to settle
for the bronze this year. The winner may seem obvious, but it actually was a
come-from-behind effort. Ai was the early leader, and Tenchi only put it
away in the last couple of weeks.

Not much to say about the Male Character category. It was pretty obvious as
things went along that it would be a race between the stars of the two most
popular TV series, and of course, the most popular series won. Care to help
me erase those question marks? There's still a lot of stuff I'm not familiar
with. (Next time I ask for the anime's name too. :-) )

Now we come to the character designers. If there's anything to be learned

popular series...) [X] means "whoever did X". Again, I'd appreciate help

individual tracks and got something like forty tied-with-ones. I expected

While this is certainly flattering, last time we checked, we were not
a "translating organization". Well, not unless you count semi-futile
attempts to translate Chowese into actual English. We're a subtitling
group that does a little editing, nothing else. Well, nothing else
towards subtitling. :)

Correctly it should be Moeve (oe = o with Umlaut) as a Moeve is the German
Word for Seagull, (white birds with a lot of gliding motion...*grin* I know
you people know what a Seagull is..just making the point :) ). However
Mehve is the Viz Manga translation for it...and it's sort of become the
official way of spelling in English.

The liner notes of the third TM OVA volume, as translated by Pioneer.

In the liner notes and in the anime, they're consistent in referring to
Ryo-Oh-Ki as "she". The clincher is, there is a sketch of Ryo-Oh-Ki
as a humanoid girl. An anime-style furry, with white tufts of hair
coming from the sides of her head, quite cute.

Of course, this is just a technicality. After all, Ryo-Oh-Ki
is a spaceship which lays eggs. I think that concepts of "gender"
as we know them do not apply...

This makes me worry.

If you'll excuse me, I'll be puking stage left at the thought of a
possible TM!R Sound File 2 showing Mihoshi, Washuu, Tsunami, and now
Nin-gen-ki joining the crowd to pursue the love of poor Tenchi...

I am having some bad feelings about the TM!R 2 series. Too much comedy
will turn this wonderful story into a, a, a, a Ranma 1/2 clone!

"Dark General"? That's more appropriate for the Dark Moon Empire.

The comedy is the best part of the series! I was actually quite
disappointed in Tenchi 5 and 6 when they seemed to say, "OK, now we have to
have tenchi go and save the universe." And he does in the typical "call on
inner sterngth for the ultimate power" attack. Ho Hum. Where have we seen
this before? Let's see...Saint Seiya, Shurato, Samurai Troopers, etc etc
etc

I'll be happy if they blow off more "save the universe" type stuff and do
more silly stuff with Washuu (no, *I'm* not a mad scientist fan...^_^)

I think it will be good to see another male character in TM2 (perhaps a

Well, not to stoke up a furnace or anything, but to call the
"inner strength" bit 'typical' is sorta like saying "Gee, I liked
that Western right up until they brought in those cowboys." I'm
not an authority on Japanese culture, but I'm pretty sure
a character reaching into his/her "inner strength" is a very
common theme and one I wouldn't brush off.

Well, that's the history of TM. It basically is a hodge-podge of
other anime/manga (A!MG is one, if memory serves correct) and spoofs it
pretty good.

Nah, that was just an artist impression. I VERY much doubt it'll turn

Well, when you consider that the series is delayed because of them
working out inconsistencies in the story, then I'm pretty sure they're
putting in the effort not to create a senseless punch-em-up comedy.

Well, that's the story of all the "new" Pioneer titles (Hakkenden
doesn't count ^_^):
- Tenchi Muyo! = takes elements from Aa! Megamisama, Ushio and Tora, etc.
- Kishin Heidan = Giant Robo inspired.
- Green Legend Ran = Future Boy Conan redux.
- Moldiver = Superhero parody.

Yazan, titans pilot! first piloted the Gaplant then transferred to
Hambrabi. First wing man Adol got killed by Unknown blast in Jion's
ghost. Then got Hambrabi wing men Ramsaes Hasa and Dankle Cooper who
both died. According to Gachapon 5 Yazan is a better pilot then
Gato! That's one of the reasons why I (only one) voted for him.

I'm surprised no one's answered this after a week!

SH^2 (note the circumflex to denote a superscript) is the common
abbreviation for "singing heart^2: sweet memories," the limited
edition 7 disc box set that was released in Sept '93. It has the
complete vocal collection on two discs; three BGM discs; a re-issue of
Cassette no Dengon, the drama disc; and a modified re-issue of Orange
Station at Abcb with six OAV BGMs tacked on the end. It also comes
with a beautiful lyric songbook featuring much Takada artwork and six
"newstyle" 1994 calendar art pieces.

Hope this helps,

I fell asleep the first time, too. But I had this prophetic dream that I
would watch it 75 more times over the next six years :-). It's an interesting
issue about what people think are the "best" anime films, as opposed to the
ones that they like to watch the most. For instance, I would have voted ONLY
YESTERDAY as number two, and was rather surprised it only got one vote.
However, if you were to ask me what my number two *favorite* anime film was,
it would be THE CASTLE OF CAGLIOSTRO. I'm fortunate that the best is also
my favorite. I find something new in HONNEAMISE every time I watch it...I
feel that Yamaga and GAINAX truly created something special in the film,
something that is for anime on the level of a SCHINDLER'S LIST or THE
GODFATHER. One advantage, now that I think about it, of there being such a
long wait for an English version to come to America is that it might
discourage American critics from seeing it as a "Japanese RIGHT STUFF." It
is tempting to compare anime to American films, on the theory that the new
audience will then be better able to relate, but by doing so you are putting
glasses on the viewer, and he or she will now see it only through your lens.
HONNEAMISE bears very little resemblance to THE RIGHT STUFF on examination;
the very concept of "the right stuff" as exemplified by Chuck Yeager, Gordo
Cooper, and John Glenn, doesn't even appear in the Japanese film. THE RIGHT
STUFF is a historical drama set in the United States; HONNEAMISE is a fable,
or perhaps a parable, set in an imaginary (though comprehensible) society.

Most of the artworks in the lyric book are "original" artworks and sketches
by Akemi Tanaka. The one with Madoka resting her cheek on her hand on page

Thought about getting Laputa this year instead, but the Kurenai

I do, however, have the songbook prominently placed atop my CD rack.
