Well, Its been quite a while since I have seen any new Macross. (I haven't
seen Macross 7, forgive me)
Back in the days when Macross Plus was released, we here in the west were
generally screwed around before getting to see how it would end. These
days, thanks to quick fansubbers and P2P software like Kazaa, the wait for
new releases from Japan does not have to be so painful.
(YES, I know that it is an illegal copy and I am breaking the law, etc, but
since there is no legitimate copy available yet, this will have to do.
Besides, I will buy a legal copy when I becomes available anyway, so there!)
On to Macross Zero.
When I first heard about it, I was concerned that it had the potential to be
crap. Thanks to a certain Mr G. Lucas, my faith in prequels has been shaken
lately.
The use of CGI had the potential to stuff things up too.
As with Macross Plus, Macross Zero starts off with a showcase of action.
The CGI is the
main thing to be noticed here. The first time you watch it, the CGI does
not appear to blend well,
but this improves with further viewings. The plot is fairly easy to follow,
even though a
few mysteries are established early, to be revealed later I assume.
The choice of character from the Original Macross series is an excellent
one, with Roy Fokker
making a very welcome appearance, as does his skull fighter (earlier
version, of course).
Roy is an excellent choice because he was underused in the first series, and
considering the fact that
he died in the original series, it makes his appearance even more welcome.
In general, the first part bodes well for the rest of the series, hope they
can keep up the quality.
Pretty good stuff for Macross and Robotech fans.

Roy Fokker is also voiced by the legendary Kamiya Akira,
easily the biggest voice actor associated with Macross. For
a long time, the only role I'd heard him play was Mouri in
Meitantei Conan. His voice in that role is very grizzled, and
I was afraid it was due to his age (and lifelong smoking?).
My fears were wiped away by Macross Zero. He may be
pushing 56, but his Roy Fokker still sounds the same!

I hope so too. So far, it looks great all around.
