Kashimashi Ep 1, more in-depth [Contains spoilers]

truly near and dear to my heart, is Kashimashi: Girl Meets Girl. Since
the term "kashimashi" is given in katakana there's no direct
translation, nor does it seem to refer to any of the characters.

Our hero, Hazumu, is walking through the woods trying to recover from a
broken heart. A sensitive boy with soft facial features and longish
hair, he had been pressed by his friends to confessing his crush on the
pretty girl Yasuna, but Yasuna rejected him. Hazumu is so sensitive that
he's president of the school gardening club and often wanders the woods
looking for native flowers, so it's clear that he's not lost. As he
wanders he stumbles upon the places where he first met Yasuna and they
collected flowers together, which does not help his state of mind.
Back at the school, his friend Asuta is looking for him to give him a
"guy thing, a rejection relief package." Asuta meets Tomari and Ayuki,
two female friends of Hazumu, and tells them the terrible truth. As it
gets dark and they have not found Hazumu, Ayuki confronts Asuta over the
contents of the package and both get terribly mad at him when they learn
it contains porn. "Hazumu is not that kind of guy!" Tomari says, giving
Asuta the anime equivalent of a slap across the face. Tomari then seems
to get very emotional herself and Ayuki says, "You pushed him too,
didn't you? Because if he and Yasuna worked out, you thought that might
make your own crush on him go away." A miserable Tomari nods her
agreement.
Interleaved with this concern for Hazumu, we've been getting odd shots
of an alien spaceship which seems to be spiraling wildly out of control
and heading for Earth. (Hey, it's anime! What do you expect?) It seems
to be headed straight for Hazumu's home town.
Yasuna, meanwhile, has dug up a small bush of flowers she had planted
right next to Hazumu's, and replanted them in the woods. She starts to
cry and says, "Again... I'm alone."
Our trio get to Hazumu's house in the hopes of finding him. His parents
are freaking out, his teacher Namiko (who looks and acts like a slightly
toned-down version of Mitsuka from DearS) is of no help, and then the
alien ship appears in the sky and comes under control just as it strikes
the mountain. A message booms out in Japanese, and video appears in the
sky: "Our appearance is an accident and we mean you no harm. This human
was injured by our actions. We return her to you. Please treat her with
respect." The picture is of Hazumu. The spaceships drops a now female
Hazumu on a beam of light into the woods more or less near the impact
site, just as both Yasuna and Tomari get there. Hazumu, apparently
unaware of what has happened, sits up stark naked and looks back and
forth between the two girls. "What?" Hazumu asks. "Is something wrong?"
It's obvious from the set-up that there are two things going on in the
series: comedy over Hazumu learning to be a girl (and others learning to
accept her as a girl), and romance as both Yasuna and Tomari recalibrate
their attraction to Hazumu and try to figure out if that'll all
work. Given that the end credits repeatedly shows them arranged in a
triangle (with triangle motifs everywhere) I think that not only will
they get over it, but that fireworks are gonna fly.
I'm just shivering with anticipation.
One thing: the fansubs I've seen so far are terrible. Doremi seems to be
the best, but I have some disagreements with some of the translations.
"Onnanoko mittai" is clearly "You look like a girl," which is Tomari's
translation, but Doremi chose "You look very feminine." I watched the
original raw and understood most of it. Admittedly the vocabulary's not
very hard: "Wow, pretty flowers, huh? They all look so healthy!" and
"Hurry and get me out of here!" are well within my target range. The
aliens on board their ship were subtitled; I have no idea what they were
saying but it was probably something along the lines of "We're gonna
crash!"
Translation query: Hazumu's last sentence in this ep sounds like "Naka
heya?" and is widely translated as "Is something wrong?" or "Is
something strange?" I can't find a translation note about that
anywhere; anyone have any idea what she's really saying?
The artwork is passable and seems to have avoided many of the problems
with static, money-saving shots, although in some places (most notably
in scenes with the aliens) it seems to have been lazier than usual. The
character designs are very sweet and distinctive, and the seiyuu are all
doing their parts. Oh, and there's some fabulous Engrish right in the
middle, with camera shots of NASA executives barking orders to one
another.
All in all, worth the time it took to watch it... twice. :-)

Wah? They're making it into an anime? I absolutely love the manga! I'll
read the review after I've seen the first ep.

I just wonder how much of the spirit of the manga is preserved. We
probably won't be able to tell for a few more episodes.

There is a reason Yasuna rejects Hazumu, and it's not because she
doesn't love him.

What, no public explanation and apology from Alien-san that he
accidentally changed Hazumu into a girl when Hazumu's body was
reconstructed? It's the one thing that sets Kashimashi apart from all of
the other gender bending anime/manga.

Don't discount one other character that you've been introduced in the
first episode. But that person is more of an outsider looking in and, so
far, hasn't had any impact on the basic triangle.

Well, it's not Pastel. But it is a fun manga. How close it will continue
to follow the manga, we won't know for a few more episodes.

That's not good to hear. Or are this mainly translation quibbles you are
talking about. Video quality-wise, which of the two groups is better,
Kaze no Koe/Doremi or Team-Tomari/DeltaAnime?

How many aliens do you actually see?

Probably the result of the animation been shipped off to various
different studios and each studio having a different standard for
quality. This is a rather common problem with most current anime.

KnK-Doremi's was much better for video quality, but I liked
Tomari's faithfulness to the dialogue better.

I'll wait and see if some other fansub groups also pick it up. Since I'm
on a dialup connection, I can't preview an episode from every group but
I have to rely on the opinions of others.

If it was a female voice, then most likely it was Puu-chan. For a
moment, I was afraid they may have added more aliens for no particular
reason.

They used a pretty standard trick for "alien language", all they
did was play the audio backwards. Now, I don't have a way of doing
the same, so I don't know if the reversed audio is actual Japanese,
but it definitely sounds like it's in the ballpark.

I heard "Naka heyo" but that doesn't help, either. I imagine the
only way to know for sure is to see the kanji in the script.

Sounded like a couple of gaijin they got off the street, the English
was grammatically correct, and the pronuciations sounded American
or Canadian.

A native acquaintance of mine thinks it's "Nanka hen ya?", "Is
something funny?" (funny weird, not funny ha-ha). But she agrees that
it's really hard to make out in that scene, no pun intended.

Notice that Ayuki actually had no problem with the contents. In fact, she
started reading them.

As of yet, I haven't seen a real explaination in the manga for it. "Oops,
sorry 'bout that. Our bad" just doesn't cut it. My only guess is that
Hazumu body was changed to match her soul. Granted, I'm still not sure I
buy that, but still...

I don't think that the change was deliberate on Alien-san's part. But it
does seem that Hazumu was meant to be a girl all along. As whacked as
the manga can get, I wouldn't be all that surprised that Hazuma was made
into a boy by some freak genetic experiment.

Considering how entirely too quickly Hazumu adapts, It's possible. Hell,
only Asuta seems to have trouble adapting. Even Tomari gets used to it
entirely too quickly.

Well, reading the manga scanslations through vol 2, I'll kinda feel
cheated if they end it with a threesome. I want my heartbreak and
angst and exclusion and loneliness and I want it now! (or at least at
the end...)
Just because they're all bi/lesbian doesn't guarantee chemistry, and
threesomes without mutual love/desire all-round are said to be
"exciting... like a housefire."
Don't cheat on the realism of the human relationships here! If
heartbreak is the natural result of a plot that's concerned with
feelings more than sex scenes, go with it! Ruthlessness in art
forever!!!
OTOH, this is an Akahori Satoru project, isn't it? He of Bakuen Campus
Guardess fame... I predict a *really* strange and goofy twist if they
let him have his way. Either that or an sudden onset of painful,
wrenching, where-the-heck-did-that-come-from tragedy. He does that

Ok, so... predictions anyone? I go with upping the ante to character
death, or something incredibly silly and bizarre. Actually, I predict
both. Yasuna dies, and gets brought back by the aliens as a guy.
Either 1. Hazumu still has hots for him/her while Tomari is suddenly
striken, or 2. Yasuna is left out, but now his/her problem is regarded
as normal male behavior. ;)
Anyone with a goofier ending prediction? Howzabout cloning Hazumu?
What other solutions can you come up with?

The words were in English, but the acting was in Shatner-ese. As
someone else said in this thread, the actors seemed to be whatever
Americans or Canadians happened to be wandering past the recording
studios at the time.
