At UK anime cons, those underage have a different con badge from the
older members. Decent gophering will stop any problems like this. I
can certainly understand the convention's concern, but it doesn't take
a lot of effort to prevent this kind of problem.

At Katsucon this year, the hentai video room was cleared out just
before the midnight showings, and to get in you had to show ID at
the entrances. I had no problem with that. Being "carded" at 47
was pleasantly ironic, as well...

Rightly so. I mean, damn, why not just have somebody carding at the
door of the room it'd be in? Again, I have to point out that any
parents who get that uptight about it usually tend to be lazy so'n'sos
who expect everybody but their own selves to raise their kids (who

I dunno, something about watching hentai in front of a lot of other people

Having been to one of them at Anime North, I can testify personally that
these things are heckle fests (I even threw in a well-timed burst into
song of "You Always Hurt the One You Love"). Face it, one watches
hentai alone, they usually do alone things, and you know what I mean.
Watch it in a group and it pretty much always becomes a verbal
one-upping tournament.
That would require some amount of maturity, unfortunately. Not
to mention the ability to think, not just react based on feelings.
But this is 21st Century America, where how you feel is far more
important than what you think.

18.
I only watched one of the shows, or part of it, it had a lot of
incest and barely-of-age characters. Just wholesome family fun,
I guess. I had to leave before it was over, there was this guy
in the seat in front of me kept squirming, a lot, and blocking
the screen. Not to mention the room was fairly brightly lit.
Which in hindsight might have been a very good thing.

In a sane world, that's what they always did, at AX, for instance.
However, the act of carding places the liability at the organizers.
It's much easier to cancel than to face the uncertainty. Do you think
they have liability insurance? For how much?
Also, it may be a deliberate reaction to the recent court decision

I be Houstonian since birth. Houston has had the title of having the most
adult businesses and strip joints in the nation for years now (not sure if
that's most in number or per capita, just know the subject keeps getting
raised every election season....) Where else but Houston could Anne Nicole
have started on the road to national prominence? I take issue with any
notion that there is any lack of door attendants experienced in keeping kids
out from where they shouldn't be available here. The con probably just
doesn't want to spring for it.
And by obscenity charge, are you meaning lewd conduct charge? That only
goes into effect down here when 'entertainers' and customers get within 3
feet of each other, and/or there's some touching involved. I've only had
slight encounters with hentai, having gotten that sort of thing out of my
system long years ago - but if there were a real possibility such charges
could be brought, the con is making a major mistake. That's something I'd
pay extra to see, especially if it involved - well, never mind that.

fuckers! I bet they've cancelled the Bukkake party as well
Nope. You live in a state where the government likes to arrest people
now and then for engaging in types of adult consensual activity it
doesn't approve of. I'm sorry, but its true.
As for obscenity, here's what I mean:
http://www.firstamendmentcenter.org/Speech/arts/topic.aspx?topic=comix
"In 2000, Texas police arrested bookstore clerk Jesus A. Castillo Jr.
and charged him with two counts of misdemeanor obscenity for selling
adult comics to a consenting adult who got them from the store's adult
section, where children were not permitted. The specific comics, issues
of Demon Beast Invasion: The Fallen, were part of a Japanese horror
series that includes graphic sex scenes. (Because Japan and Europe do
not stigmatize comics as a children's medium, they have long produced
mainstream comics with more intense violence and sexuality than
Americans do.)
Castillo was sentenced to 180 days in jail, a year of probation and a
$4,000 fine, after the prosecutor in the case told the jury, "I don't
care what type of evidence or what type of testimony is out there, use
your rationality, use your common sense. Comic books ... are for kids."
"I can't imagine a world in which the same argument would have worked
for books or for films," said comics creator Neil Gaiman, in a news
release after the verdict in Texas v. Castillo. Gaiman has authored
Batman and Superman comics for young audiences, and the edgy,
critically acclaimed Sandman comics for older readers. He is a board
member of the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund, a national nonprofit group
whose lawyers represented Castillo.
Although the defense fund got a court to throw out one of the charges
against Castillo, and prevented him from actually serving jail time,
his conviction was upheld on appeal, and the Supreme Court refused in
August 2003 to hear Castillo's case. That refusal possibly allowed
stereotypes about comics to set a dangerous free-speech precedent, in a
nation where founding father Thomas Jefferson once wrote, "I am really
mortified to be told that, in the United States of America ... a
question about the sale of a book can be carried before the civil
magistrate."
-------
Frankly, if the prosecuter choose to arrest the convention holders for
showing adult cartoons, they could end up serving jail time.
Instead of blaming the convention organizers, maybe you should blame
your state government, that wants to throw people in jail for selling
adult manga to adults?

Gotta be honest, why are they still showing hentai (I keep trying to
call them 'Lemon', old timer that I am) at cons? The fan base is no
longer just dateless college kids, and there's more variety then in the
"good old days" when you had a choice between anime with things blowing
up and anime with naked women blowing things up. Yes, it's an anime
genre with a long tradition in fandom, but if you wouldn't show live
action porn at an event you probably shouldn't be showing animated
porn.

First of all, there is no such agency cited in this article as the "Texas

After a google search, I found this:

The actual agency, and community, involved here was the Dallas Police and
the City of Dallas - and as any Houstonian will tell you, Dallas is not a
true "Texas" city. It's a misplaced Oklahoma city - I've been leading the
fight to get Oklahoma take it back for years.

I have to laugh that you took offense to the notion that your city doesn't
know how to run its adult businesses. Not that there's anything wrong with
that, but it's definately not something people are usually proud of. You
won't often see an advertising campaign "Come to Houston, we've got the best
damn porn industry in the world - fun for the whole family."
Mainly because there are still quite a few dateless college kids? Unless
you're going to help them out.
(no, I don't want to help with the chairs once the hentai room is finished)

I've heard about the gun control laws in Dallas. You're right, sure as hell
don't sound like a Texas city to me.
Yes, I've heard about those crazy Texans. Now they're sending special
agents into bars and night clubs to arrest anyone who they think are
drunk. No questions, no chances. They think you're drunk, you're given
an automatic ride to the local clink. Can't even call for a cab anymore
when you're drunk. Can't even plan to have a friend drive you home or to
watch over you anymore. This was an article in the Sun newspaper last
week.

Rant to follow on which I'm sure ELL will lambaste me for erroneous
facts, half-truths and misconceptions (or down-right "brokeback
maple-syrupy" stupidity) for which a Canadian can not possibly know
about but which an American like him knows all about. ;p
R
A
N
T
Unfortunately, once the government makes up its inflexible little minds
about something, it would take something like an act of God to change
it. Because comics and cartoons were aimed primarily at children in
the past, they (the government) believe thats where those mediums will
always be aimed at now in the present and for all time in the future, no
matter how much evidence to the contrary that you throw at them.
And based on this line of reasoning, it seems that the government is
saying that any perverted group of people who would even try to show H
cartoons and be stupid enough to think that masking it as 'adults only'
will save them from the government righteously swooping in and arresting
them all for showing this filth are sadly mistaken.
And this is what the conventioneers are afraid of. The government and
its unyielding inflexibility towards the fact that anime and manga are
not just for kids but for adult to enjoy too. The Texas government while
being very modern and enlightened in various aspects of the people and
the world at large, it is also very rooted, bound and gagged in its past
on certain issues, (like comics and animated media being just for kids
and too immature for any normal adult to want to look at). They would
rather light thier own shorts on fire while they are still wearing them
than admit that they might be wrong or off base on this subject. The
case of Texas vs Castillo only goes to prove this.
Now I'm all for protecting the children from being exposed to subject
matter that they wouldn't be able to understand or would end up hurting
them, but at the same time, I would also like to think that the
conventioneers would be thinking along the same lines and do as other
conventions have done in the past; namely card people at the door to
rooms showing the questionable content and keep thier people at those
doors to prevent any youths from sneaking in for the duration of those
films.
But with the ever present fear of the Texas government coming in to
arrest them should they even consider showing those films no matter what
precautions they take, or the fear of some 'concerned parent' stating to
the authorities that thier little Jimmy or Sally saw that questionable
content at the con, I can sadly understand why they just cancelled the
adult night altogether. Better to disappoint a few fans than to risk all
future cons altogether just to satisfy those same few fans.
>On Sun, 26 Mar 2006 14:43:50 -0500, Captain Nerd <cpt...@nerdwatch.com>
Gah, lately you can't throw a stone for fear of hitting some
pseudo-incest fetish H. Heck, it's not too hard to find incest themes
in non-H these days. Bro/Siscon relationships date back even before
the seminal "Revolutionar Girl Utena", and still crop up in today's
harem styled shows like "Sister Princess", and the still hilarious
"Majikano". (Maika's bro-con goes way beyond healthy, even by Anime
standards!)
In the hentai world, while conquering your little sister is fairly
common fare, it seems that mom (or step-mom... there are still some
lines even H productions won't cross.) is the usual (and not always
unwilling) target.
http://robkelk.ottawa-anime.org/primer/ahprimer.html
The Hentai primer covers one or two of these titles.
Failing that, "Stepmother's Sin", "Taboo Charming Mother", "Mama Mia"
(do these title writers have no shame?) "Immoral Sisters", "Step
Sister", 'Family of Debauchery", and oddly, "Wife with Wife" and
"Maison Plasair" all manage to squeeze a relation or two into the same
bed.
With the exception of the last two, it seems that hentai production
companies think of pseudo-incest as a marketing point rather than a
perversion, so checking the titles carefully should be a safe bet.
That said, I can't imagine anyone purchasing hentai without at least
checking checking the back cover blubs, so if you stick to R1 licensed
discs, and read the descriptions carefully, you should be able to
avoid hentai interpretations of family fun hour. :-)

Thanks for the info dump. Its not that I have anything against the
incest hentai out there, (not that I would even consider such sickness
to happen in my family), but I do draw the line when it involves
children that are under even the minimum age of fourteen for
understanding about what they are doing. I fully understand the
difference between real life and that portrayed in manga and anime,
however I don't think my kids would understand should they get thier
hands on it and see what there is to see. So thats why I need to know
what company so I can keep a more careful eye out for thier titles next
time I go out to rent anime.

Dunno about the link here. Just getting a weird-ass image of a mistress
berating me for a number of reasons because Keenspace can not serve my
image request... and that she now going to punish me like the "naughty

There's a huge difference in anime and hentai. Just don't rent hentai and
you won't have a problem with your kids getting their hands on it. Unless
you don't mind them getting their hands on "normal" hentai and it's just
the weird incest shit that you draw the line at.

Ummm.. ... no? I wouldn't be caught dead renting Sailor Moon. Hell, I
won't even download it for fear I get caught and the lawsuit text posted to
Smoking Gun and so EVERYONE knows what I was downloading. I won't mind
going down for Zipang; Sailor Moon, no way in hell.

Are you filming a new television show called "Growing up Heinlein" or
something?
Now whats wrong with Sailor Moon? Unless you have your hands down the
front of your pants or your mind in the gutter when you think about it
that is. The original Sailor Moon is very tame, especially the fansubs
we used to watch in the local University anime fanclub many years ago
before it even was noticed over here in North America by the big name
companies.
I can't help it if a lot of dirty minded people decided to target Sailor
Moon and her Senshi for the multitude of porn images floating out
there. The anime and manga itself is still pure and unsulleid so I can't
see any reason for any lawsuits for having or downloading it. Perhaps
you can enlighten me to what makes it so dangerous to have? (the actual
anime and manga I mean, and not all the smut based on it.)

I'm guessing it's a threat to his manhood to watch something shoujo.
laurie
Nahh. Its called "Growing up Realistically" featuring radical ideas
like, "Not Lying to Your Kids" , "Where thier Siblings Really Come From"
(Otherwise known as how Mommy can go to the hospital and lose her big
tummy in twelve hours or less, and not "Hospitals are the supermarkets
where babies come from"), "How to encourage your childs honesty to you
by being honest with your child" and other Naturist concepts.
Naturist meaning anti-prude but not pro-sex. If you get my drift that
is. Most have to come from a similar Naturist background to actually
understand the concept, but not all. Some people can just see it for
what it really is without reading thier own pre-conceptions into it.
ROTFLMAO!!!
Nothing threatens a macho man more than being thought to like things
that can be perceived as being "Not Macho". Its also a great way to
spurn the company of women who are looking more more than just physique
and machoism in a potential mate.

Try the live-action version. It can be campy as hell sometimes, but it's
far more palatable than the anime. And, if nothing else, just remember that
it's worth it for Ami-chan.

I'm more guessing it's the fact that the first season is really nothing more
than Usagi acting like an idiot and the second season has the pink spore.
You have to go until S to get to the good stuff.
That's why PGSM was much better.
*thwack*
LOL So true, so true. I've bought them for my wife for years, not that
they get much use with the way we go at it <grin>. Three girls so far,
maybe there'll be a boy this time. But I'll be just as happy with
another girl too. ;)
But you'll note that there wasn't any H stuff in there either. (and
onsens and bath houses don't count as H) (unless you've seen one
particular episode of Patlabour that takes place in a bath house; talk
about hilarious, even spoofing the censoring dots in the fight <;-P

Heh. The very first episode eh? I'll have to check the archives. The

up to the task of understanding what was going on. (Not that you
really need to for most H-flicks, but still!)

WOW ... now your mind is in the gutter. I was referring to how Sailor Moon
is associated with pre-teen girls by me and everyone else I know. It's a
fracking magical girl fighting anime, absolutely not something I'm
interested in. I don't watch Naruto or Bleach, why in the hell would I
watch Sailor Moon?!
There was an arc of it. The Ami stories.

Haven't ever been to an Anime Convention I gather. Either the
Cos-Players there are aggressively oversized Pre-teen girls or else they
are colledge age people who enjoy watching and dressing up as Sailor
Moon and her Senshi. And thats boy guys and girls dressing up in the
parts, gender swapping sometimes even. Scary thing is, some of them are
actually too good at it and you don't notice the difference until they
speak. ^_^'

No the point is that it's the con organizers' decision what they
do and do not show. If they don't want to show hentai, that's
up to them, and if you don't like, don't attend, if they advertised
hentai and changed their minds, get a refund. Boycott the damn
thing if you feel that strongly about it. If they made the choice
due to local laws, move there and work to change the laws. But
unless you're a part of the con organizing body, you can't demand
that they show the stuff you want to see, because it's none of
your business. Hell, if I organized a con, I'd deliberately
*not* show hentai, just to piss off you anti-blue-nosers and your
porn-entitlement mentality.

Heh... At Otakon a couple years back, I had to card people for a hentai
panel. Generally I was looking at the card and then looking up at the
person, so I often didn't notice any unsual costuming, etc., until after
I saw the ID.
Let's say I was quite taken aback by a male member of the AARP dressed
up as a Japanese schoolgirl...

Yeah, that would give one pause. At least you didn't encounter
"Man-Faye" or "Sailor Bubba", either of whom would induce a desire

Unfortunately I Did meet several "Bubba Senshi" at one con. It scarred
me so badly that, not only did I spend an hour in the washroom feeling
sic, bent over yet another type of "princess" (the porcelin variety) I
was scared away from attending it the following year. I have no problem
with futanari or hermats or even trannies, but Dude. These were the
scariest 'happy' senshi I have ever or ever want, to run across.
(visualize your garden variety construction steel workers, mustaches
and all, dressed up in sailor senshi gear and you might understand what
I was faced with) <:-(
