An animated version of Anno showed up in one of the later episodes of
"Kareshi Kanojo no Jijou" and was castigated rather harshly by some of the
show's characters. (L) He also shows up on the cover of the final Japanese
LD for the series. So I think that the "leaving" was a bit of
spiteful/wishful thinking on the part of the "anti-Anno" crowd of Japanese
fans.

I believe he stopped playing an "active" part in Kare-Kano around
episode 24.
> I have heard conflicting rumours, and
>would like to know.
The "Anno was fired from GAiNAX" rumours? ^_^ He's still part of
GAiNAX, he did an interview for a Japanese newspaper from GAiNAX's
office. I don't think he's working on "Furi Kuri", he was working on
something with Studio Ghibli but I believe a hold was put on that
because Miyazaki came back out of retirement to do another movie. Right
now I think he's doing another live action movie, I could be wrong.

He wrote the script for them, but didn't direct them. So he was
"involved" with them. The last two episodes being directed by someone
else was planned in advance.

"Loving it to death" is a bit exaggerrated, but there's no
denying that there is a quirkyness to Utena that is to be
admired. I think if you had went into the show without hearing
the hype it may have clicked a little better, though. How many
episodes of EVA have you seen, btw?
I also wanted to ask you about the new Spring TV season in
Japan. Any new shows you got that are worth mentioning? And how
are the existing shows progressing? (such as Tsukikage Ran, One
Piece, GTO, etc...)
Ahhh...seeing as most of the new shows start this week in Japan,
you wouldn't have seen them yet. So...scratch that.
Wait a few more eps.
It's honestly the Black Rose Duels that really launched it from good
series to amazing for me.

If I hadn't heard all the hype I probably would have asked my
friend to "not bother" after a couple of episodes. But since
people keep telling me that Utena "gets better" I'll stick it
out. But I have a really tough time relating to any of the
characters - I don't like obsessed people in real life, so it's
hard for me to warm up to the obsessed characters in Utena.
>How many
>episodes of EVA have you seen, btw?
>
I've been watching EVA in "all the wrong ways". Two years ago my
friend sent me the two EVA movies and I watched them without
having seen the TV series. Then this past January the "Kids
Station" did a several night EVA "marathon" which my friend
taped for me. I watched the first 4 episodes, but I was getting
so many other shows that I wanted to finish first that I've left
the rest of EVA with a pile of "someday" tapes. ( These tapes
include a "Key" marathon, the second half of "Alexander" and a
bunch of movies. )
>I also wanted to ask you about the new Spring TV season in
>Japan. Any new shows you got that are worth mentioning?
As you noted in your next post - I haven't received any of the
new shows yet - my friend is still finishing up the shows from
last season. And I'm now behind by 20 tapes. Ooops - wait a
minute, the new show "Da Da Da" is on tape number 444, but I've
only watched up to tape 429 ( not counting the "someday"
tapes ). So unless I "jump the queue" for that show it will be a
couple of weeks before I watch it.
>And how
>are the existing shows progressing? (such as Tsukikage Ran, One
>Piece, GTO, etc...)
All three of those shows continue to be amongst the most
entertaining anime on right now. One Piece, in particular, has
been having incredibly gripping action and drama. Kazamakase
Tsukikage Ran continues to be marvellously witty with great
animation. And GTO keeps me in stitches ever week. ( Also, the
new opening animation to GTO is spectacular! )
Plus there are so many others - I need another holiday ( and I
need my wife to go off on a long business trip ) so that I can
catch up... (L)

It is my understanding that Anno left on episode #19 (whose ending
credits featured the infamous burning of the cels) and returned for the
final episode, #26 (whose ending credits were, I felt, very appropriate).
A superb series that enjoys a deft and clever sense of art direction; I
see KareKano as one of the four best series to follow Eva, together with
Utena, Cowboy Bebop, and Lain.

I'll agree with you that KareKano, Cowboy Bebop and Lain were great series.
I haven't seen enough of EVA to pass judgement. I've seen up to episode 11
of Utena and for the life of me I can't see why so many people love it "to
death".
Dave Baranyi
Well, my friend keeps on taping the episodes at a rate of twice a week. The
latest batch of tapes I received today have Utena #16, 17 & 18 on them, so
I'll eventually "get there" (g).
But I also "waited" through 96 episodes of Maison Ikkoku and up until now 44
episodes of KOR and neither of them ever came off of my "B-list". (g)

Eva and K-K I can understand, but the others... ? Why watch Cowboy Bebop
when you can see vintage Space Adventure Cobra or Lupin III instead?
I'm surprised that I haven't seen more complaints about how "confusing"
K-K is, especially the ending. Following all the stuff about Eva being
unintelligible, I'd expect people to still be looking for ways to put Anno
down. K-K surely provides some bait...

Part of it you just answered yourself. Cobra and Lupin -are- vintage.
They never looked half as good, not even the movies, and they sure as
hell never sounded that good. ;p Considering that Cowboy Bebop doesn't
fall over in the plot or action department, that puts it one up just on
the videophilic sense.
Along the same lines, why watch more than one Tenchi? It's all the same,
right? Nah... sometimes more of the same is good. Lupin's a good show,
I'm informed that Cobra is a good show, CB is a good show.

gotta watch 'em all! ^_^;;
Okay, let's set the record straight. To address a more minor point first,
the character who showed up in episode 19 is _not_ Anno. The character,
named "Fukuda Kouhei", is the class representative for 1-F (Asaba's class) who
is basically around to foil Yukino's appeal to axe the Asaba Dinner Show from
the Culture Fair. He tells Yukino that 1-A never had a chance, and informs
her that she's going to come in _dead_last_, at which point Yukino goes
Second Angel mode and wreaks havoc. By the way, those watching carefully will
notice that Fukuda Kouhei also comes in second place on the student rankings
right after Arima, Yukino, and Tonami.
To repeat: Fukuda Kouhei is not Anno - the character is voiced by Tobita Nobuo
and "face acted" by Takamura Kazuhiro.

In fact, Anno _never_ left KareKano. It is true that the directing duties were
split between him and Satou Yuuki (starting episode 16), but Anno was still
solely in charge of screenplay for every KareKano episode except 25 (which was
done by Satou Tatsuo, the director of Nadesico).
I don't know how the rumors of Anno's estrangement got started, but in the end
they are all entirely false.

I agree that there has been a fair amount of confusion on this issue, and
I'm not entirely sure that I understand it all myself. However, I did ask
Mr. Yamaga about this in February of last year, and while admittedly them
boys sometimes have a Rashomon perspective on each other (witness Takami
Akai's countertheory delivered after Yamaga explained why he hadn't
finished AOKI URU), he did in fact seem to indicate that Anno had in fact
walked off the show, while discounting some of the wilder rumors, such as
Anno's supposed affair with Yuko Miyamura. What is meant exactly by
"walking off the show," however, may be open to further interpretation.
It may also refer to having not renewed the series beyond episode #26. At
the time I asked Yamaga, KareKano was still on the air and close to the
season finale.

You're right, that is part of it. But if C.B. doesn't do anything I
haven't already seen in another series/story (as far as I watched it
didn't), just reshuffling characters and scenarios from 20 or 30 year old
shows everyone either forgot about or was too young to remember, I don't
see much of a reason to get excited about watching it. "Cool" only goes
so far. Eva was interesting in that it didn't *copy* Yamato, Gundam and
those others, it offered a postmodern critique of them.
>Along the same lines, why watch more than one Tenchi? It's all the same,
Actually I gave up on Tenchi a long time ago exactly for that reason.

This latter concept is conceivable - the impression one gets from watching the
show is that whoever was at the controls at the top (presuambly Anno) was
extremely unwilling to deviate from the manga and write a "new" ending - the
problem seems to be that there simply wasn't enough manga story as of the air
date to fill 26 episodes. That's the only explanation I can think of for
essentially two full episodes of recap plus another episode of total filler.
I would be interesting to hear how Yamaga (or other insiders) would reconcile
tales of Anno leaving the show with his presence in the credits throughout the
series. Well, I guess the only way to know would be to ask them. ^^;;
(It would also be interesting to hear exactly what role Anno played as
"planning" for Ai no Awa-Awa Hour [or however that wants to be romanized])
