Hi!

Just happened to see a making of the movie, "The Matrix," and one of the
guys, I think he was a visual technician, said
that the Wachowski Brothers were inspired by an anime film and wanted their
film to look like it. Does anyone know
what this film was?

And the bigger question is, how many anime will now rip off The Matrix?

Is there a need to, considering that this style's been done for years?

Well, this isn't anime, but the Dreamcast game Biohazard: Code
Veronica seems heavily influenced by The Matrix in a couple of parts.

Having seen interviews with the brothers, the real answer is 'no one film'.

The brothers like anime, they've seen a fair amount, it was the overall
style of anime thye were after not to be like any one film.

Of course, this ignores the fact that they mention Ghost in the Shell
by name in the supplemental materials on the Matrix DVD...

The Wachowski brothers love anime, and I'm sure they took influences
from a lot of different anime titles. But GITS is the one they name
when asked this question. They say specifically that they saw Ghost in
the Shell and told their producer "I want our film to look like that."
I'll find the interview on the disc and give you an exact time and
chapter mark if you want...

My guess is Megazone 23 inspired the basic story (not the action sequences)
for "The Matrix". I don't know for sure though, but a friend of mine who is
reallly into bad movies and anime told me that the anime "Lain" and the
movie "The Matrix" were both based upon the same back story...'course I
don't know for sure myself...but what was the anime or story was "Lain"
based upon?

I guess that was my original reason in asking.
I watched the DVD supplemental and they did mention an anime movie, but not
Ghost in the Shell.

Well, at least from looking at the "Making of The Matrix" feature on the DVD,
I'd say they'd be pretty hard to pick out if you put them into your average
otaku crowd... *grin*

Well if one was to believe Grant Morrison, he claims they stole the idea from
his series The Invisibles.

To be entirely fair to Morrison, I don't think he's ever said that they
outright stole the ideas from the Invisibles. He has said that the two /are/
very close in concept and that this film would make his attempts to license
the Invisibles out for live action production near impossible.

Also, as a long time reader of the Invisibles, and having watched the Matrix
within its first few days of release (before any Morrison commentary had
been published), I must say I found myself thinking "these guys MUST be r
eading the Invisibles."

Wasn't Lain made after the Matrix?!

I am inclined to say it wasn't...but it is close. I kinda wonder how long
it takes to concieve, prepare and present a new Anime in Japan and then the
US....and even if Lain was made after The Matrix, this does not mean that
they do not share the same backstory.

Dude, if ANY anime inspired the makers of "The Matrix", it would most
likely have been "Harmageddon". Same kind of wavy motion, same bleak
outlook, same kinds of "what the heck is going on here" twist and turns
to the story.

Besides, it was directed by Rin Taro... who ANY Hollywood director could
probably do well to emulate...

Gordon.

Hey, I know Neuormancer by William Gibson is a book from where Wachowskis took their inspiration. There is also a scene at the beginning of the first movie, where Neo is holding this exact book

Watch the anime called 'X'. The Wachowski's took loads of ideas for the Matrix from this.

The Matrix wasn't a terribly original idea (heck, The Thirteenth Floor,
released the same year, takes the same idea and does it better if not
with as much 3-D bullet time), and I suspect you could find anime that
did the same thing going back a ways.
