You couldn't have written that about Megami mag with a straight face...<L>
Dave Baranyi
(clipping)
> 22. AprilTV http://www.yumetsukai.com/
The writeup looks interesting, and just the fact that Matthew
(http://matthew.animeblogger.net/) doesn't like the manga suggests that
there might be some potential here...<L>
Dave Baranyi
(His tastes and mine are usually about 90% out of sync nowadays, so if you
don't like what I like, you may well like what he likes...<g>)
My reaction after reading the 1st volume of manga: think "Narutaru",
only with kinky transgendered middleschool orgies instead of violence.
I can't imagine how the first story arc could be broadcast. I don't
think it is even possible to "clean it up" absent a complete rewrite.
(Matthew liked "Binchou-tan"? I wasn't aware that _anybody_ liked
"Binchou-tan", despite it's technically good animation.)
- dbm
Hey, Narutaru did get broadcast, and so did Dr. Slump, twice...
...And consider what's been in Nerima Daikon Brothers...
> (Matthew liked "Binchou-tan"? I wasn't aware that _anybody_ liked
> "Binchou-tan", despite it's technically good animation.)
>
> - dbm
The protagonists in "Binchou-tan" appear to be under the age of six - that's
Matthew's "preferred upper limit" nowadays...(That boy needs some
professional help!)
Cheers -
Dave Baranyi
BTW - both of you have caught my attention now - are you aware of any
scanned locations of the first manga? (What's on Matthew's page doesn't look
orgie-like at all...)
Thanks again -
Dave Baranyi

I keep saying, all we gotta do is convince Bush that spammers are funding
terrorism, and watch the F-14s^H^H^H^H^H (RIP, Tomcats, good ride) F-18s
reduce some geek's parent's basement to rubble.
The "Hawks".
Unfortunately, they lumped the first three volumes into one big BT folder
and since there isn't currently much interest in it, the download is
crawling along at something between "dead slow and slower than dead". This
is a real pain from my p.o.v. because I just want to try out the first
chapter or two and now have to wait gawd knows how long.
And yes, I realize that there are actually two big BT folders, one bigger
than the other, but the smaller "lq" folder isn't d'ling at all...
And yes, I realize that these are "volunteers" who are doing this out of the
"goodness of their hearts" and I shouldn't be whining...
The moral of this story is that Publishers should "get with the times" and
either have samples available for people to try or have affordable downloads
for purchase.

If it's Hawks, "LQ" is about the same as the best HQ releases from other
groups, and "HQ" is only useful if you intend to print the scanslation.
A quick search on aMule revealed all 3 volumes with adequate sources, and
I'm getting the files from there, so you may have more luck with an ed2k
client (just search for "yume tsukai", I only got 4 results, and 3 of them
were manga volumes).

Band of the Hawks did the first three volumes. If there's any more than

Yay. More lolis. (in very flat voice, followed by rolling of eyes.)
But the character facial design rang a bell, and a visit to the official

The dark and heavy line work on the eyes make thier faces seem
shrunken. The effect isn't as pronounced with the meido-triplet on

Heh. This show's creators have a little something for everyone.
Lolis, bouncies, furries. Heck, TWINS if that's your thing.
Marjorie is right up your alley. And she proves it in just about

Well she does have that "classically bent" sort of pose to her
(although she's not quite a rubenesque as the sort of lady who usually
gets stuck in that pose). But even then, her leg line goes so high!
And then there's the small matter of the slight bend when her back
ends, and her waist begins. It might be anatomically correct, but it
breaks her otherwise lovely asthetics.

Oh if only they would! Maybe the show would die an early death by
bloodloss, sparing the audience.
Thus far, I've seen the main character (The lovely looking green
haired girl) do nothing more than the "nice girl who's unsure of
herself but has a hidden talent that will surely come through in times
of crisis" bit. She accidentally offends at least two of her
band-mates, and mostly botches her auditions.
Chance Triangle Session pulled off the same genre, but with more
heart. Wandaba style had marginally less service, but more and better
insanity. Angelic Layer has the same character archetypes, but with
much better animation and more compelling plot. And boy do I hate to
say it, but when Morning Musume makes your OP look bad, you've got a
lot of work to do. :-)

Looks like a difficult scan join (you'll notice it's an 8-pager), which
is perhaps why Galen didn't announce these ones in his posting. If I
blew the whistle on this before you meant to, sorry, Galen. If you plan
to try this one again, I'd like to get it again, because it does indeed

Perhaps the artist made that leg line a bit longer in a subtle attempt
to not make it look like that sakura petal is censoring anything. Just
a guess. I still can't spot anything wrong with the shape of her back
bend. And I'm still not going "hubba hubba." Maybe this drawing was
really meant to be looked at artistically rather than pruriently. But
then again, I could well be wrong.

No. Don't want to. No more tentacles. We have enough.
"Arinko", meaning "Antsy" (as in small Formicidae, not parent's sister),
is the nickname for Arika in "My Otome".

IMO it hits a good "sweet spot" of objectionability - enough to be
edgily funny, not so much as to be straight-up pandering.

Really? Age aside, Mai is pretty darn close to what I'd look for if I
was in the market for a lady. Smart, spunky, industrious, driven, and
RESPONSIBLE, all wrapped up in a package that's easy on the eyes. That
she has an amazing instinct for the maternal, and a surprsingly
soft/vunerable side only add to her appeal.
Okay, trying to pick up the high school girls might be a bit sleazy.
For Mai, I'd be willing to wait. ;-)
That she's a HiME, with the whole "Most Important Person" thing going,
sucessfully dating Mai could be potentially danger, but with a 'child'
like Kagatsuchi, I'll just assume she'll win all her fights, and take
my chances. :-)
OBEva: Actually, thinking about it like this makes me realize that
Mai has all the traits that western fans like about Asuka, without the
insipid cruelty, and constant bitchiness.

I've been rather unimpressed by most of the ren-ai game based fare of
late. Generally, I give 'em one episode to catch my interest, (if I
don't skip them all together) and drop faster than a hot hot skillet
on bare skin if they don't.
That said, there's usually at least one or two that are watchable
every year. "Shuffle!" caught my attention this year, with gorgeous
character designs, and some pretty damn break-neck pacing in it's
second half.
If 4-chan and the blogosphere are to be believed, there might even be
something good about ToHeart 2. (Tama-nee is a healthy girl!)
If you're gonna watch Kakyuusei 2, (or any of the other game
conversions) do me a favor and post if they're actually any good. :-)

It's not without it's flaws, but Nanoha never really loses sight of
it's direction. IMHO, consistency, good pacing, sympathetic
characters, and of course character design are all strong points for
this series. Where it occasionally falls flat is in the dialogue.
Nanoha is cute, smart, sweet, and earnest (I'm a sucker for earnest!),
but she occasionally spouts out dialogue that carries both more
emotional complexity and maturity than one might expect from a grade
schooler. It doesn't ruin the show, but it sometimes goes a little
past my line for suspension of belief.
Come to think of it, I like this show a LOT. Rob Kelk, if you're
reading this, I think I'd like to do an entry for Nanoha / Nanoha A's,
if Ethan hasn't already attempted it. :-)

I'd kick ANY woman out of bed for eating melon-pan. There's a time a
place for everything, and my bed at any time, is not the place for
melon-pan. Seen the "Shakugan no Shana-tan" shorts yet? Not really
spoilers, but just in case... <rot13> Fur rngf zryba-cna ba Lhhwv'f

Shana's pretty damn acerbic, isn't she? If you've gotten up to 9,
the show isn't even in high gear yet. Good stuff (including a Shana
origins arc) is on the way, with the pace picking up rapidly as they
approach the episode limit.

Oh I'm sure the nudes are pandering. This is after all Megami. But
that said, this artist is doing a good job of imitating both chinese
watercolor and baroque painting.
I've already addressed Rose's pose, and the more I look at Solty, the
more I'm thinking "Neoclassical Nymph". In addition, there's a fair
amount of subtlety to the shading in the skin tones that we don't
usually see in anime style artwork. I'd stop short of equating it to
chiaroscuro, but the intent is clearly there.
Apologies for the wanna-be-art-snob ranting. This piece just caught
my attention.
OBArt: Someday, I really must get around to writing or contributing
to a guide to Anime Iconography. It's so rich and accessable!

I decided to "take one for the team". Got as far as episode 3,
realized that when M.O.E. fails to include significant service, AND
cheaps out on the animation, that I'm not interested in what they have
to offer.
To put it another way, "Hanaukyo Maid-tai" gave us service with
comedy. "Ultimate Girl" gave us service with sentai parody. The
Cosplayers trilogy gave us service, with an original, if deeply flawed
"behind the scenes" concept story. "Steel Angel Kurumi" gave us
service with an interesting cast of characters.
"Rakugo Tennyo Oyui" gives us no appreciable service, irritating
voicework, and sub-par animation. M.O.E. is trying to put together
what appears to be a mahou shoujo group drama action show, but I think
they're failing miserably.
I know this probably sounds a little harsh, and to be fair, it's not
like M.O.E. does this sort of thing every day, but Kurumi was equal
parts drama and comedy fluff, and pulled off the formula much better.

For those who are braver, (or perhaps more masochistic?) here's 26

I tend to agree. Plus, this is one of a couple of pictures this time

overly pixelly) GIFs - despite the fact that when I stop and look

A distinctly watercolor style, IMO, which I've never particularly liked

More specifically, "Rozen Maiden: Traumend". (If it even needs
specifying at this date.)

Again, in full translation, "Canvas 2 ~Rainbow-Colored Sketch~".
(I've just noticed that in addition to meaning "color", "iro" can also
mean "sensuality" or "lust". A layer of meaning in "Lime-iro Senkitan"
and "Ryuukitan" I hadn't been aware of...)

...I'm not sure I'd agree with that one.
As the poster itself says (albeit in a weird enough font that I had to
consult the katakana to be sure I was reading it right), "true tears". I
could try to translate the caption if people really want.

Ah. Haven't watched any of this yet (still have to finish My-HiME), and
don't remember seeing the name in the manga scanlations I have.

Well, I'm up for a good bit of balance. Which is a large reason why I
love Video Girl Ai OVAs and hate how Trish Ledoux and Bill Flanagan
adapted the scripts--it had a wonderfully delicate balance and they
upset it.

Hmm. Well, I'll still give it a chance if the opportunity permits.
Bit of a bleak picture there, but I'll still check it out if I ever get
the chance.

Morning Musume makes anything look bad. As I've said before, the Spice
Girls as a football team and reserves? No way in hell. I'd love to set
up the Kansai bass-guitar-and-drums female noise duo Coa (who look cute,
but whose CDs fucking shred) in front of them, count them off, turn the
soundboard to 11 and watch MM get their caps peeled back.
I'm sincerely sorry about that, but if it was uploaded, came up in
GetRight's browser and downloaded, I assumed that it was ready for prime
time. Please let us know when the fixed version goes up (if you're
planning on putting it up).

It's a great manga -- you just have to like Ueshiba Riichi's style.
Utterly bizarre but at the same time somehow meaningful. It may not
transfer well to anime.
However, you don't like much of the anime I like (I put both Monster
and Mushishi in the top 5 series I've ever seen) so I wouldn't put
high hopes on this one. :)

I translated the first three volumes for the Band of Hawks -- I
actually started a translation of volume 4 but there seemed to be
little interest in the project from anybody so I never really
completed it. Yume Tsukai is not as good as Discommunication in any
case, but Discommunication is 17 volumes long.
-Chris
I hope that you and Hawks (or somebody) will pick it back up. I'm
interested in seeing more of it.
I couldn't get that monster scan-folder to complete, nor any of its files to
unzip, so I gave up, deleted it and ordered the manga from Amazon Japan.
They're supposed to be delivered tomorrow, so I'll be able to give my
opinion soon enough.

I'm just not big on melodrama, nor overly sober series. That being said,
what would your other "Top 3" be?

Well, YT is neither of those. :)

Probably Shoujo Kakumei Utena, Turn A Gundam, and possibly Sailor
Moon...although I'm not really sure. I actually don't watch all that
much anime -- I'm much more of a manga reader. 95% of the anime I
watch is either Gundam or some manga that I like that got made into an
anime.

I no longer have the volumes, so it's unlikely. I was translating
manga as a time-killer when I lived in Japan but I'm back in the US
now and have a lot more to do.
-Chris
Sounds encouraging. <g>

I'm sort of the opposite. I read very little in the way of manga, and
usually only because a specific anime has caught my attention and caused me
to be interested in how the manga is telling the story.
Turn A is the only Gundam series that caught my interest. I found Utena to
be way too long, but then that's because I didn't like the characters and
only watched the whole thing because of all the praise of the series. I
watched most of SM because it was my daughter's favorite around 10 years
ago, and I did read the French SM manga translations, but while I have fond
memories of it, it isn't one of my top favorites.

I could have tried to get you my copies of the scanlations of the first
three volumes (and that one-shot by the same author) somehow. Then
again, since you can read Japanese, you'd probably get more out of those
books than these.
> (Six more reasons to get you down this way sometime in the near future.)
I look forward to that, whenever it'll be. Just be sure to be well
stocked up on coffee and the milk & sugar to put in it when the time comes.

So it goes. Well, like I said, if not you/Hawks, hopefully another
group who also does a good job.

That's a good example of the more bizarre parts -- that first
storyline of YT is the most over-the-top thing he's ever done. But it
still has (as usual) a grounding in Japanese mythology and buddhist
symbolism, so it's not just totally random grotesquerie.

I am afraid that it will not transition well to the screen. Already
in the shots I've seen on the official site, the backgrounds have lost
much of their detail and the characters look more like generic anime
characters. Much of the appeal of the manga comes from Ueshiba
Riichi's distinctive style, not necessarily the plots or characters.
>Turn A is the only Gundam series that caught my interest.
I guess I'm not surprised that it would appeal to a non-Gundam fan.
For Gundam fans, it's interesting due to the message of hope that
counterbalances the darkness of most of the series (and also Dianna
Soreil is one of the great characters of anime).

I'm not really sure how much I like it anymore. It's been 4 years or
so since I actually watched any of it.
-Chris
I've just received the six volumes and took a brief peek at them. I see what
you mean by his backgrounds -this looks to be an interesting read.
(I'll scan a couple of the color plates afterwards and post them for people
to see.)
Thanks -

>Turn A is the only Gundam series that caught my interest.
One other thing about this -- I really wish that Takahashi Rieko would
do more voice work. IMO she did an excellent job portraying Kihel
Heim and Dianna Soreil, especially how she had to switch back and
forth between the characters (and portray "Kihel acting as Dianna" and
"Dianna acting as Kihel"). But she's done almost nothing aside from
Turn A except for a few bit roles.
-Chris
