So, last night I attended a showing of the Viz Pictures english dubbed
live action death note movie (part 1).

If anyone else attended - what was that trailer before the movie. I
was distracted and missed the "punch line" - it appeared, to me, to be
either for the manga or the anime, but there was something at the end
of the trailer about "Free download"...

Anyways, I've heard a bit about Death Note, but hadn't watched or read
any of it yet. So I came in with a bit of preconception, but not
enough that something had to be overcome.

In case you haven't read or heard about this yet, Viz apparently took
some of their voice actors (at least one web site I read said it was
the english dub actors for the anime), and had them dub the live
action movie that was released a couple of years ago in Japan.

The dubbing wasn't very tight. In particular, I thought the scenes
with Light's mom seemed visually jarring... probably just was the way
the words worked.

There was spatterings of laughter though the movie. I thought it was
interesting that at least two of the biggest reactions was when a bus
advertising Misa Misa was seen on screen, and then later when L makes
his first physical appearance.

Not knowing the plot of either the book or tele series made it
possible for me to think of just the story that was told in the movie,
rather than comparing it to either. In that regard, I enjoyed the
story that was told... so far. I might very well attempt to see part 2
when it appears (yes, the movie that is out takes us to the first
fateful meeting between Light and L. the rest of the story comes in a
subsequent movie).

Not knowing the original story's intent, I can't tell whether there is
supposed to be sympathetic characters in this story or not. About the
only one that seemed sympathetic to me was Light's little sister ;) .
Seriously, the actory playing Light seemed to physically convey what
he was doing, and the English dub actor seemed okay conveying intent.
L on the other hand came across almost autistic - but maybe that is
intentional.

Anyways, it felt like watching one of the early Godzilla movies in
several ways - the disconnected voice vs lip movements in places. The
attempt to bring English cultural references into the Japanese movie
(or maybe those cultural references were in the original. I don't
know...)

Anyways, it made for an interesting evening. The audience seemed
primarily 18-25 or so year olds, with about as many females as males.
There were only a small number of us "mature" audience members (ie
over 40...) and I probably was in the running for the oldest one
there. I didn't see anyone that seemed early high school or younger.

After the movie there was a 5-10 minute "behind the scenes" that not
only showed the making of this movie, but had glimpses of part 2 "The
Last Name".

I've only seen the anime up through where Adult Swim has aired it. So
far, there aren't really any sympathetic characters. The most normal
character would be Light's sister, but she's in the anime so infrequently
when she showed up after awhile, my reaction was "Who's that? Oh
yeah..Light has a sister." Oddly, most of the characters had similar
reactions...

No, for me, everyone in Death Note is either a tool or a pscyhological
nutcase.

I don't know if L is autistic or not. He definitely has
some...eccentricities. He also shows signs of OCD, and doesn't seem to
know how to interact with people in a normal social setting. At the same
time, he is highly intelligent and has great insight. Autistic people
often have problems socializing, and sometimes have amazing talents.

My autistic daughter certainly thinks L is autistic. The way he sits a
chair, the quirky eating habits, the abruptness -- lots signs.

Either the character was intentionally written as autistic, or the creators
modeled him after someone that was (known or unknown to them)
autistic, IMO.

And then there is N, stacking up his blocks...

(I am rather disappointed that the live action Death Note movie is
being shown dubbed.)
