Take out the blood (though rare). Take out all the breast-size

times Lina wastes a city. Take out almost all the times Lina
beats on Gourry for no reason. Take out all mention of
Lina's powers being black magic, and coming from the Makozu.
Take out the evil gleam Lina gets in her eyes when casting
a dragon slave. Take out Lina actually killing people. Take
out Xellos being a Mazoku ...

cleaned it up, what of any value will they leave in ?

Why? They'll see something that is much better than NASCAR Racers, even

The furor over cuts makes absolutely no sense. Just about every movie on

Lina Inverse's insecurity about her own appearance

It's the only thing that explains how someone so
intelligent and self-confident can be in denial about
the relationship she has with Gourry. Without her
insecurity and innocence, she's just another
stereotypical 9th-grade AD&D player-character.
The "flat-chested" jokes (as well as the quivering-

It's gonna be scary, kids. Scary and sad. This is the network that
ceaselessly promotes Los Luchadores (spanish for "Will not last more than
four episodes") for crissakes. One cannot expect much intellegence from
these guys. Look for lots of needless cuts as they try to simplfy the whole
complex Slayers cosmology for the kids, and I bet they'll do something about
the whole thing with Sylphiel's crush on Gourry as well. Not that I think
it'll even make it that far before they can it. Hopefully they'll at least
let it get to episode ten, wich would have made a dandy final episode if
Slayers had been just a short OAV series. Oh well. I hope they don't replace
the music, and if they do, I really hope they don't have stupid vocals in
every fight scene like on Digimon. Rest assured, that, having seen all of
the first two series and alot of the third, I'll be writing amusing and
President-Bush-Ridiculing edit lists. And they'll be very, very long.

To hell with local listings. Just watch Digimon and they'll be sure to hype
it there. It looks like a good chunk of episodes are coming up,too. See
Veemon reach the Ultimate Stage! Again! Considering that Veemon has already
reached 615 different stages, it should be quite an event. Also, every scene
that was originally without dialouge will now have a joke about pizza and/or
Davis forgetting TK's name. Don't miss it.

This is certainly going to be interesting... I'll check out the first episode.
Actually, I think Slayers has a better chance to be successful on broadcast than
Escaflowne did (though I doubt it will become a hit). The series is light
enough to appeal to Fox Kid's target audience, I think. The editing probably
will not need to be as heavy as it was for Escaflowne, either. IIRC, there
aren't a lot of things that would need to be cut; I suspect most of the cuts
will due to time constraints. Most of the remaining editing will probably be
recording new dialogue: eliminating the small-breast jokes, invocation of dark
powers, and the like. TVGuy said that Fox insits on scoring all it's programing
itself, so the music will definitely be changed-- though to what degree, I can't
even guess.
That said, I'm dissapointed to see so many people are already starting to bitch

the be so stupid? I hate Fox! Wah wah wah!" Well, if that's how you feel, DON'T

I dunno. I'd think some of the RPG/fantasy world parodies might go over

Well, thats a relief. As long as CPM is handling further editing and not
Fox, it shouldn't be 'too' bad.
I do plan on watching what Fox puts out for "Slayers", just to compare with
my videos I already have of the uncut dubs. Otherwise I probably could care
less what they do since I already own it uncut on videotapes.
Like I stated above, as long as CPM handles editing for U.S. TV, most of the
humor (sans the breast jokes) is left intact, and Fox runs episodes in
order, "Slayers" just may stand up to the likes of a certain little yellow
electric rat over on that 'other' network.
-Matt
No, what he was saying that Neil Nadelman already changed the spells for the
existing dub (available on VHS and DVD) to tone down some of Lina's more
controversal spells. And this was years before any TV deal was inked.
From what I hear, Fox will be doing additional editing (video and dub
dialog) ofr the TV broadcast, not CPM.

The blood is pretty prominent in the last few episodes, and is part of a
dramatic sequence that emphasized a serious injury to someone.
Big thing to take out: the breast jokes. There's more than a few here.

As I understand it, CPM has nothing to do with this as they don't have the
broadcast rights, anyway.
From Anime News Network:
Justin Sevakis of Central Park Media has written us to inform us of a
misuderstanding regarding the broadcasting of Slayers on Fox Kids. :
"There has been a misinterpretation made of the posting on Right Stuf.
Central Park Media had nothing to do with the Fox Kids deal regarding
Slayers, as we do not reserve Broadcast rights. These are owned by Enoki
Films, who negotiated this deal separate from us."
Hmmm, so basically it is going to be a completely different version
than the exsisting dub? I remember when Fox got ahold of Beast Wars
and ruined that show, and that was an American show. I don't see
any good coming from a Fox version of Slayers.
Mmm... maybe by not airing the OAVs?
Arnold Kim
>Plus, Neil Nadelman (the translator of the TV series) said that CPM

Actually, that only happened in the first few episodes. After
that, the dub stuck pretty squarely to the sub script (Seeing how TAJ
Pro barely does any rewriting of the translations.)

So Fox is going to spend a lot of money to edit the series, which will
probably be cancelled in two months, tops, after failing to immediately
garner Pokemon-level ratings. Or better yet, Fox Kids itself will
disappear, as many of its affiliates don't want it; it's forced on them in

Whutta waste of cash. Advice to CPM: Count the money twice before you

I agree that we shouldn't incessantly whine forever, but come on! When
something you truly enjoy is about to get radically changed, you can't
blame the fans for being a little pissed. *I'm* a little pissed. I don't
have to watch the Fox Kids broadcasts, and my DVDs aren't going to vanish,

Martina is, and there is _one_ dramatic scene where

I wonder what they will do with that ? At least it's minor.

Easy, Naga isn't in the tv series. Naga is only in the OVAs and

series.

Yup, that would be easy to fix. Hell, even in the japanese version,
nothing explicit was said anyhow. It's only us perverts trying to put
2 and 2 together.

This is getting silly. Even if they cut up Slayers, the show has
enough fights, explosions and easy to understand plotline. Slayers is
very straight forward and is great for mass consumption. Now, they'll
probably change the demons into something else, which will be sad, but
it won't take away from the show if you don't know the truth in the
first place.

Hmmm. Maybe they will and won't at the same time. With a new dub, they
can just call them the "Mazoku"...
There is one other huge problem. The show has a continuing storyline.
Will Fox Kids respect it? Or will they mix up episodes? Even if they
respect the continuing plot, the show is aimed at an older group of
viewers than Fox's 6-11 demographic. Will these younger kids be able
to follow the story from week to week? If Fox mixes up the episodes,
will the kids be confused by all the dangling plotlines?
These are the same problems, a show re-targeted to the wrong age
group, that doomed Escaflowne, and a fsck'ed continuity, that doomed
CCS.

If you mean the Mazoku (with Xellos being one of the more familiar

rendered as 'monsters' in both the dub and sub veresion even though by
Slayers Next it is obvious that they are in fact demons (pledges and

Why would a change in dub be needed? The Mazoku are already refered to as
"the monster race" in the current Next dub. I am wondering if some of you
people have accually seen Slayers as it exists currently or using some old
fansubs as the basis of your comments.

Hell, what are the odds we'll even see the same opening video? They'll
probably replace it with some flashy CGI crap like they did for CardCaptors.
For that matter, what are the odds they'll even air episode 1 first? Maybe
we should have a betting pool on which episode they air first.
I suppose the _really_ sad part of all this is that Fox is the same network
that brought you such wholesome family entertainment as Married With Children.

It's nationally broadcast, but it has a footprint smaller than

Cardcaptors isn't a relevant case here. Two entirely different companies.

Sad part of _WHAT?_ All they've said is that they're going to show it!
There is NO information about how they will be adapting the anime. There
is nothing but speculation and comparisons with Escaflone. And Slayers is
not like Escaflone...
Now that I think about it, Real Ghostbusters had demons and devils
referred to as such, including several references to selling one's soul to
one for power or vacations. And it is airing now on Fox Family... So
perhaps the "they'll cut the black magic" stuff is overblown.

From the synopsis available Slayer like Next and Try is very sequence
dependent. Messing aroudn with the sequence would leave a lot of people
going '-What- is going on?!'
Yeah, I know what you mean. Slayers is one of my favorite shows too.
If Fox couldn't handle Beast Wars in its original form then Slayers
has no hope. Cartoon Network seems to be the only channel that dosen't
have too much of a problem leaving anime resembling the original.
Not the first season, but Slayers Next has some real depth IMO and to a lesser
extent so does Try.

Some of the recent edits in anime series shown on US TV seem to
demonstrate that the acceptable level of violence, language, and occult
is apparently much lower for anime than for domestic animated/kids'
series. The logic behind this comlpletely escapes me.

That's true, but Fox Kids has shown a couple of serialized shows in order

Well, Gourry appears right from ep.1 on, so it's ok to air the show in
order.

The plot to Slayers is pretty loose until late in the show and it's
pretty straight forward. I don't see why they'd want to air them out
of order (but then they do anyhow, I guess).

Sigh, then someone is obviously not doing their job translating (maybe
he IS doing his job, but a sad one).Lina explained to Gourry
(something like 40 times) what Shub is that includes "mazoku"
(literally is "demon/devil race").
>Now that I think about it, Real Ghostbusters had demons and devils

But for the main character to pledge allegiance and draw power from
them? Changing the references isn't that big a deal, but it does take
away some flavour of the show, particualar in Try when the humans are
cought between the struggle of gods "shinzoku" and demons. But as I
said, it'll still be a fun show with all the explosions and slapstick
humour (where else would depict a fishman cooked and eaten!).
>Not the first season, but Slayers Next has some real depth IMO and to a lesser
>extent so does Try.
But will they last to air Try? The graveyard scene in Try is pretty
gruesome for 6-11 year olds.
I don't think Fox will finish the first season myself, but we shall see.
Why would they do that? The Power Rangers explicitly stated that they fought
DEMONS many times in last year's incarnation. FK seemed to have no problem
with it.
Though that's probably because Power Rangers and Digimon practically own fox
and can do whatever they want.

Because domestic kid animation shows
already have PhD people behind their productions,
so they're already "pre-approved."
Anime don't have that, so they're easy prey for network PhDs. ;p
Ask Neil to explain that one again.
Yes, he goofed, but it's up to you
whether his excuse is acceptable to you. ;)
Sure they do. Lina says so. :-) (Last episode of NEXT)
Even if she is a sociopathic bandit-killing sorcery genius,
she's still romantically innocent. What she and Gourry
did in the region the Lord of Nightmares occupied
(spoiler below*) was AFAIK the first time for her.

Who says they have to do anything if you actually pay attention to what you're
bitching about half the time maybe you'd realive that in Software Sculpters
(the small company that Central Park Media tookover) that dub the of Slayers
calls the Mazoku 'the monster race'.
Also if you got off you're high horses maybe you'd relize that Fox was also the
company that brought back Dungeons and Dragons, first aired the cartoon version
of Beetlejuice, shocked half of America by airing a show that had one of the
good guys die on just the second episode and another spend the first season in
jail (X-Men) they also had to stop one villian who was bent on letting lose a
plague that would have killed millions.
Sounds like something that mirror clone of Lina's from the OVA's might come up
with.

I originally had it translated as Demon, but the person
Software Sculptors hired to check my scripts claimed that "Mazoku"
translated as "Monster." Since Mazoku was a word I'd never run into
before, I shrugged my shoulders and went along with it. Turns out I
was wrong to accept the change, but by then it was too late and we
were committed to it.
