Well, it's that time of year once again! No, not the time a fat guy in
a red suit drops down your chimney - it's time to get ready for the
New Year's Day Challenge!

That's right, it's time for you to post the teams who you think can win
out over the nasty scenarios that Blade and I have come up with over the
year. Those of you who've played this in years gone by already know
that there are rules for the Challenge - here they are, tweaked from
last year's version of the rules for clarification:

We've come up with three scenarios (easy, medium, and hard, relatively
speaking). Your mission, if you choose to accept it, is to recruit a
team of three anime or manga characters to help you take on one of the
scenarios. (The smart move here is to not accept the mission, but how
much fun would that be?) If you want to have your team go up against
two or three scenarios, or put together two or three teams (one for each
scenario), that's okay. On New Year's Day, we will post the scenarios,
along with the teams that are taking part in each scenario. Blade will
be judging which teams are up for the challenge - if you disagree with
his rulings, then you have one week in which to write a short fanfic
telling us how you and your recruits handle the scenario, and then
Blade and I both get to critique the fanfic.

The scenarios take place in our world. You can't send your teams to
Pallet Town or Kami House or Hinata-sou, because they don't exist here.
You can send them to the Vatican, if you think that it'll help (or if
you just want to pray for a miracle), because the Vatican really does
exist.

The characters get whatever gear *_that they own_* that they usually
wear or carry. (For example, the "Dragonball Z" character Future Trunks
gets his big-@$$ sword, because he always carries it around with him up
until <spoiler deleted>. He doesn't get his mother's time machine,
because that belongs to his mother.) We may be lenient on this when a
character has a mecha or hardsuit issued to him - convince us. However,
when the gear itself counts as one or more characters, the "extra"
characters have to stay at home. (No, picking Otaru from "Saber
Marionette J" doesn't give you Lime, Cherry and Bloodberry for free.)

Omnipotent characters, or those near enough not to matter (e.g.
"Slayers"' Lord of Nightmares, or "Ah Megami-sama"'s Belldandy or
Kami-sama), are disallowed. Picking one or more of them takes all the
challenge out of it.

Characters must come from anime or manga. (No, you can't take Gina
Diggers - "Gold Digger" is a North American comic, not a manga. Yes, we
know Antarctic Press had a poster in the January 2003 Newtype USA - that
still doesn't make their products "manga".)

While it would be nice if the characters you choose would be able to
work as a team (with you or each other), it isn't required. Also,
while we would prefer that you take a team made up of characters from
three different stories, you can pick all three from the same show if
you wish. (Yes, you may choose three "Z Fighters", or all three
Gunbusters, if you really want to. Don't think that we haven't planned
for that, though.)

You have to state from what part of what continuity you are taking your
recruits from. (There's a world of difference between start-of-anime
Ranma and end-of-manga Ranma, for instance.) If you fail to do this,
then we will assume you want the weakest possible character that matches
whatever you state. For instance:
* If you say "I want Lime" without elaboration, then you're not going
to get the Lime from "Shadow Lady" or "Saber Marionette J".
* If you say "I want Lime from SMJ" without elaboration, then you'll
get Saber Marionette Lime as of the first moment we saw her:
emotionless, unable to fight, and still in the storage chamber.
* If you say "I want Washuu at the end of the series" without
elaboration, you'll get the Washuu from the "Pretty Sammy" TV series.

All characters will act in character, with the exception that they won't
try to kill you or immediately try to take over the world (unless, of
course, that's what the Challenge scenario requires).

Was that clear?

No? Okay, here's an example, with scenarios that are not in this year's
Challenge:

Joe Newbie decides that this sounds like fun, and (not realizing how
twisted we can be) goes for the Hard Scenario. His team is Son Goku
from "Dragon Ball Z", Dark Schneider from "Bastard!", and Ryoko from the
"Tenchi Muyo" OAV series - all three from the end of their respective
series. (Obviously, Joe Newbie has made the classic mistake of thinking
our scenarios can be beaten by opening a can of whomp-@$$ on them.)

Jane Otaku decides to play, and goes for the Easy Scenario. She picks
Vash the Stampede from "Trigun", Shutaro Mendo from "Urusei Yatsura",
and Meowth from "Pokemon", just because she likes them. She forgets to
say from when in each anime she's recruiting each character, so we rule
that each one is at his weakest when they show up.

Jim Oldtimer decides to play too, and also goes for the Hard Scenario.
He picks Kirika from "Noir" (in the first episode), Ryo-Ohki from the
"Tenchi Muyo" OAV series (just after "I Love Tenchi!"), and Kiki from
"Kiki's Delivery Service" (at the end of the movie), because they've got
as much chance as anyone else of finishing one of our scenarios.

On New Year's Day, we announce the scenarios.

The Easy Scenario reads as follows:
"CPM asks you to get their anime 'Revolutionary Girl Utena'
aired uncut and uncensored on national television.
Getting it run on a cable channel isn't good enough to
qualify - it has to be a _broadcast_ of all 39 episodes."

Blade looks at Jane Otaku's team, and reasons that Mendou could simply
buy the network, bribe the regulators, and broadcast whatever he chooses
while Vash and Meowth kick back and relax. He announces that Jane is a
winner.

The Hard Scenario reads this way:
"For the third year running, and in a stunning display
of unoriginality, Blade and Rob plan to run a scenario
where a nasty virus gets loose and threatens all of
mankind. Change their minds."

Blade looks at both Joe Newbie's and Jim Oldtimer's teams, and decides
that there's no way they could succeed. (They could kill the two of us,
but that would make it impossible for us to change our minds.) He says
so in his announcement of who wins and loses.

Joe Newbie, understandably enough, doesn't take this too well, and
writes an epic fanfic in which Son Goku beats us up, Dark Schneider uses
mind-control magic on us, and Ryoko seduces us. I rule all three to be
out-of-character. (First, Son Goku doesn't pick on people weaker than
he is. Second, Dark Schneider doesn't appear to know any mind-control
magic. Finally, Blade's already got a Significant Other and I'm not
attracted to Ryoko, so even if she was to be unfaithful to Tenchi, it
wouldn't work.) I thank Joe Newbie for playing and wish him better luck
next year.

Jim Oldtimer also decides to challenge Blade's ruling, and writes a
fifty-word fanfic where Kiki flies Ryo-Ohki (in little-girl form) up to
my window, they knock, and when I answer, they have Ryo-Ohki look so sad
about the whole challenge that my heart melts and I just have to call
the whole thing off. I laugh a bit, decide "yeah, that's probably what
would happen", and override Blade's decision.

Good luck, and may the most worthy teams win! Replies to the newsgroup,
please.

before his confrontation with the villain.

All 3 challenges.

(Blade, have you seen *any* of these three anime? If not, then we're
going to have to impose on David Watson for some help here...)

Same teams from last year, but let's trade scenarios.

Easy:
Science: Bulma (GT version)
Magic: Sakura Kinomoto (end of CCS)
Muscle: Piccolo (Cell Saga version)

Medium:
Science: Washuu (TM Movie 1 version)
Magic: (Hmm... Can't use Bell-chan this year...)
Oh, what the hell - Yohko Mano (Movie 6 version)
Muscle: Mirai Trunks (post-time chamber, pre-smoked by Cell)

Hard:
Science - Skuld (O!MG manga, or does she fall into the same
catagory as Belldandy?)
Magic - Pretty Sammy (near the end of Magical Project S)
Power - Pan (GT - NOT the Goku Special version!)

As I don't know a single one of those, if you briefly describe the range
of their abilities, it would help immensely in my judging. ;p

TEAM RETURNING CHAMPIONS:

Hoping for a Three-peat, I open with the team that's made it through
all three challenges two years in a row:

Son Goku: Mightiest and most clueless warrior in the multiverse, at
his maximum power (powaaa?)

Locke the Superman: Greatest psionic to ever walk the multiverses,
hidden in the form of a green-haired boy.

Kaos, the Last Shugendo: One of the most powerful mages to ever live,
master of manipulation, wielder of the magic of the five elements and
nine virtues, creator of the Samurai Troopers.

As usual, they'll try all three challenges.

I'll also field two other teams:

Girl's Night Out:
Belldandy: The most beautiful and kindhearted of goddesses. And
enough power to kick some when she has to.
Ayaka Kisaragi: No booze or Karaoke in my house during the
challenges; after that, I'll let her throw a party. Mistress of
spirit-breaking magic, a tough investigator, and not bad in a scrap
either. Not quite up to the power level of some others, but she has
her own resources and is perhaps not quite as helpless as some might
think.
Mirai Ozora: With the nigh-infinite power and protection of Moldiver
and a pure heart (and my coaching to replace that of her brother), how
can Mirai lose?

DENSETSU no SUPAA-EGO! Team (Legendary Egomaniacs!)
Dark Schneider: Darshu is the Man, and he knows it. What other
sorcerer could rip out his own heart to give to a girl, and then get
better? And he has such cool heavy-metal based magic to work with.
Lina Inverse: The legendary sorcery genius, Dragon Spooker, and
Natural Enemy of All Who Live will give Darshu a run for his money in
EITHER ego OR magic. And she's a fair hand with a blade, too.
Vegita, Prince of the Saiyajin: Okay, he's no Goku, but against just
about anyone else, they'd better just pick out the casket NOW. NOT the
brains of the group, though.

Both of these teams will also try all three challenges.

But aren't the Z Fighters, at least the Sayijan Z-Fighters close
enough being all powerful to play the challenge.

I'm bringing forth the Shoujo Supreme Tag Team:

Tomoyo-chan from CCS(end of the series)
Ahiru from Princess Tutu(end of episode 2)
and for combat skills,
Oscar from Rose of Versailles(about the time she becomes Captain of
the Royal Guard)

In case neither of you have seen RoV, Oscar has the skills that one
might expect from a French soldier living in the period right before
the revolution, including skilled use of swords, guns, cannon, and
other such weapons; as well as the ability to competently command a
group of people. Nothing magical, just old-fashioned tomboy spunk.

Gods, no. Only if you're silly enough to think that Blade and Rob
will only throw FIGHTING challenges at you. I think only two of the
six challenges in the past two years have been ones you could
reasonably confront with firepower and win.

Hm...

Um...

This is pretty cool.
I assume the scenarios have already been devised? Then I'll take a gamble and
go for intelligence over sheer brawn. (but with a side order of brawn)

For Easy and Medium challenges - Team Good-on-Paper

Ami AKA Sailor Mercury (As of end of Sailor Stars)
GOOD : Magical attacker, but mainly chosen for her neato computer (which I
really dig) and her intelligence. General senshi abilities probably give her
greater speed and resiliance than her teammates.
BAD : Lower magical and tech power in comparison to other characters I could
have chosen but don't like as much.

Nancy AKA Ms Deep (Read or Die, as she is at the end of the first OAV ep)
GOOD : She's a great all-rounder with a very, very useful phasing power that
can apparantly be used without limitation. I'm not entirely sure how you can
hurt her without surprising her. Great martial arts, gymnastics and
sharpshooting.
BAD : Perhaps untrustworthy, but I don't think it'll be an issue.

Spike (Cowboy Bebop)
GOOD : Excellent martial arts, gunplay, piloting and detective skills. Also
very cool.
BAD : Possibility that he'll gripe about his teammates, most likely to want to
do his own thing.

For Hard challenge - Team Ikaruga

Excel (Excel Saga, about ep 13 as that's as far as I've got)
GOOD : Action girl, great resistance to pain, apparantly willing to work for
free
BAD : Insane, not intelligent in the slightest

Osaka (Azumanga Daioh)
GOOD : Circuituitous thinking, apparantly willing to work for bread
BAD : Insane, physically incapable

Ed (Cowboy Bebop)
GOOD : L33t h4X0R 5k!115, apparantly willing to work for a T1 line.
BAD : Insane, very wobbly.

Yeah, I'm sure an all-crazies team is VERY original.

Um, Wasp-sama, did you somehow overlook what Rob wrote in the original post?

"Omnipotent characters, or those near enough not to matter (e.g.

"Slayers"' Lord of Nightmares, or *"Ah Megami-sama"'s Belldandy or

Unless you're referring to another version of Belldandy who is somehow *less* than
omnipotent (or nearly so), I'd suggest replacing her with someone just a tad less powerful,
IMHO.... <^^;;;;

Although she'd technically only be _that_ powerful unsealed. But
then - in the manga I've read - it's been implied that Bell could
override the seals if she really wanted to. (I.e. got mad or upset
enough)

I think this calls for a ruling from Blade and Rob: Is a clearly
and permanently sealed Belldandy okay?

Each team is for all three scenarios:

Team NK1124
Nuku Nuku, Kyusaku Natsume, and Akiko Natsume

It seems like they would have a decent chance of
beating whatever is thrown at them.

Team Ethan's Favorites

Nuku Nuku, Grimlock, and Dark Schneider

Dare I dream.

Team Wreck and Rule
Godzilla, Unicron, and Anthrax (from Bastard)

My hope is that this team does more harm than
good. Godzilla is shown in UY Beautiful Dreamer
and probably some other anime.

1) Belldandy is only omnipotent if she's Unsealed. Leaving the Seal
on, she's just Badass -- and that's only if she wants to be. I'd put
her power level, Sealed, as somewhere below Marvel Thor (as of the era
I used to read 'em; I understand he's got himself turbocharged
lately). Goku, who I have in Team Returning Champions, would whip the
living hell out of her (well, assuming he WOULD fight her, but that's
another issue).

Someone should write an Excel Saga fanfic in which Il Palazzo steals

Yep. You're cheap!

first ones listed for what my daughter affectionately calls "crazy

LOL! I had one last time and I'll be running them again, for the Easy
Challenge. Here's the Google reference:

http://groups.google.com/groups?q=excel+mihoshi&hl=en&lr=&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&safe=off&selm=586abfa1.0301280040.a89c474%40posting.google.com&rnum=3

And here's the relevant section, updated:

Team Lovely SNAFU, the biggest set of female screw ups in anime that
actually have potential!

Excel Excel, from Excel Saga, as of the end of the "Japanimation"
episode (A tunnel from F-City to the US could come in very handy).

Mihoshi, from the Tenchi Muyo! OVA series, last episode, when Washuu
says "I bet on Mihoshi." ^_^ (She possesses a spaceship, which I've
always found very useful).

Aisha Clan-Clan, from Outlaw Star, when she masquerades as "Firecat".

I have faith that they'll do something really boneheaded that will
turn out to be the right thing. *rolls eyes*

BTW, I request that I take advantage of the "self-insert" rule so that
I can be the brains and source of scientific expertise for this crew.
They certainly don't have either!

FWIW, I decided to enter this team in last time's Hard Challenge after
I saw what it was, and they defeated it! Of course, they never did
succeed in the Easy Challenge. At least this year I have another
week of vacation to actually do something!

I'll be posting my Medium team and my daughter's team later.

Okay...

Easy Team:

Hitomi Kanzaki (Escaflowne) (at the start of Episode 26)
Tsubasa (KareKano) (from when she enters the story, so no, she's not still
in hospital)
Drake (Read or Die)

Medium Team:

Melan Blue (Brigadoon) (any point where he's not injured :p)
Marin Asagi (Brigadoon) (immediately after she gains the Cosmos Yariya)
Juna Ariyoshi (Arjuna)

Hard Team:

Sena Robin (Witch Hunter Robin) (post acquisition of the "artifact" in the
second half of the series... (obviously this also means she has her
glasses))
Alex Rowe (Last Exile) (before episode 19)
Seiji (Whisper of the Heart)

Skuld only has a Second Class Goddess licence. She isn't anywhere near
omnipotent, so she's okay for the Challenge.

Off the top of my head, I'd say "no" (she *is* a First Class Unlimited

I wouldn't be able to help much. I'm certainly sorted for Mouse, but have
no Galaxy Angel (nor have I seen enough to know what Milfeiulle's "usual
state" is), and only the first ep of Wandaba Style (and would like to see
more; it was pretty nippy).

Okay, let me give this a shot.

Easy challenge:

1) Cologne, Ranma 1/2.
Good: Solid balance of power and intelligence, depth of mystical knowledge,
scheming and manipulative.
Bad: Well, scheming and manipulative.

2) Bean Bandit, Riding Bean.
Good: Physically durable, strong, good knowledge of firearms, underworld
connections, plus that kickass car. Soft spot for children, which can be
good or bad.
Bad: Police are after him, which can be a problem.

3) Kyusaku Natsume, Nuku Nuku
Good: Technical knowledge. Built and android intended to be a top secret
weapon, then readjusted it so it can interface with a cat's brain.
Bad: Frankly, not much. Doesn't really seem to take much care of himself,
but that's about it.

I'll figure out the other teams later.

Hopefully, we won't have a virus *this* year ;P Besides, as Lurker reminded
me, Justice League already used that plot in its first season.

> 2) Bean Bandit, Riding Bean.
> Good: Physically durable, strong, good knowledge of firearms, underworld

Uh, considering that these characters are being ripped wholesale from their
series, I don't think he'd have a past with either underworld connections or
the police in this world. Doesn't stop him from *making* a new one, though
^_^

Anyway, I probably need to give this much more thought, but to hell with it.
I'm skipping the description of the characters I used for 2003's challenge,
assuming their status and equipment to be the same as last year's (unless
specifically updated.)

1. Team Spirit

a) Meisuke Nueno, aka Nube-sensei (Jigoku Sensei Nube) making a comeback
from last year's victory.
New equipment: Prayer Scroll, Crystal Orb --which contains
manifestations of damn-near all phantoms he has successfully
destroyed/exorcised,-- hollow pen with his personal Kudagitsune.
b) Nausicaa (Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind)
New status: Just after naming Ohma.
c) Nigihayami Kohakunushi, aka Haku (Spirited Away)
Status: After being told his name and consequently released.
Yet another noble soul, respectable diplomat, skilled at magic, can turn
into a dragon. Being a River God, possibly has some control over water. Too
naive for his own good at times. Often distant.

2. Team Stay In School

a) Kintaro Oe, the Golden Boy!
b) Kazuo Kiriyama (Battle Royale manga)
Status: Immediately prior to being abducted for the Program.
Perfect genius. He can learn literally anything from a few instants of
practice, from playing the violin like a virtuoso to using Army-grade
weaponry to superhuman martial arts. FILTHY rich. Capricous. Has no emotions
whatsoever (brain injury) and almost never speaks. I'll tell him that
helping out with the challenge is another "interesting experience."
Equipment: His infamous Ingram.
c) Shogo Kawada (also BR, weirded out by being allied with Kiriyama)
Status: Right before the final confrontation, before his injuries become
too serious (I'll take him to a hospital immediately after he arrives, gives
him plenty of recovery time.)
Government-level hacker. Ample experience in combat, extremely honorable
and intelligent, heart of gold. His learning skills are almost up to par
with Kintaro and Kiriyama's. Intimidating and intense.
Equipment: Unlimited "Guadalcanal" equipment and the means to disable
it, SPAS-12 shotgun.

3. Team Divinity Ver. 2.0

a) Saori Kido, aka the Goddess Athena (Saint Seiya) making a comeback after
her questionable "victory" last year.
b) Virgo Gold Saint Shaka (Saint Seiya)
c) Ohma (Nausicaa) also making a comeback after his victory.

And again, like last year, I have no idea how to assign them. Probably
Hard/Easy/Medium. But I have another bonus team!

4. Team °_°

a) Guu (Jungle wa Itsumo Hale Nochi Guu)
Status: ...anytime during the anime series. After getting her bearskins,
if you want to nitpick.
Bad: Uh...
BAD: Gah!
Equipment: Bearskin coat. Her Stomach.
b) Ayumu Kasuga, aka Osaka (Azumanga Daioh!)
Status: End of series.
Good: Uh...
Homerun: A!
Equipment: Butcher knife, supply of melon bread, removable Chiyo-chan
pigtails.
c) Chiyo's Dad (Azumanga Daioh!)
Status: 4921710572719501727186023816
Good: He likes tomatoes.
Bad: He doesn't like tomatoes.
Equipment: Tomatoes.

Belldandy can unseal herself any time she really wants to. Since a
challenge may very involve saving all of humanity from certain
destruction (as has happened before), that makes her "omnipotent if she
really wants to be".

Indeed. I see a lot of people have included a ton of crap I've never
seen *coughcoughdamndigisubscough*. So, Rob, could you please add an
official addendum asking everyone to provide a paragraph about all the
characters they're using summarising their abilities?

I hate doing this to all the people who've posted already, but the
lessons of last year are clear: when there's no judge, everyone makes
their team win, and few are satisfied with it. ;p

Technically, they shouldn't be, but what the hell, at least I know who
the FFVII characters ARE. ;p I'm cool with it, but please describe their
abilities in reasonable form. Some things that games LET a character do
(like, say, cast SuperNova and destroy the solar system) are clearly not
actually within their power level and are there merely as eye candy.

Wouldn't the .hack// characters get in on a technicality anyway?
They've been seen in the opening sequences for the .hack//Liminality
(anime) opening, and are referenced strongly in .hack//Legend of the
Twilight Bracelet (manga), both of which are legal, IIRC...

I'll try making up a team; use them for all three challenges:

Lebia Maverick, from Silent Mobius, just before the episode
Alice in Logic Space. Very intelligent, police officer,
super computer hacker abilities, used to dealing with
alien/dimensional/magical weirdness.

Cutey Honey, from New Cutey Honey, after the 4th episode
when the initial plotline was finished. Wide variety of
skills, including combat if needed, and good undercover
agent.

Hiroshi Ozora, from Moldiver, during his initial Captain
Tokyo period, before his sister altered the Moldiver suit.
Scientific and inventive genius, with a super-suit to
handle any physical challenges.

That should be a pretty good team for figuring out how
to solve a problem, gathering any info and producing
any equipment needed, and physically putting the
solution into practice.

Three teams for three levels:

Easy:
Angela - Someday's Dreamers
Kokoro - Kokoro Library
Ban - GetBackers

Medium:
Ranma/Rella - Cinderella Boy (yes, they count as ONE character)
Youka - Juuni Kokki
Rizel - Rizelmine

Hard:
Sanzo - Gensomaden Saiyuki
Aika - AIKa
Poemi - Puni Puni Poemi (if she isn't killed off by Sanzo before the
challenge begins)

Bleh, out of all my characters, only Guu is guilty of the infamous digisub.
:P

Anyway, if you insist, here's a minor rundown of these characters:

Team Spirit:
a) Meisuke Nueno, aka Nube-sensei, from Hell Teacher Nube. A young and
kindly grade-school teacher with immense spiritual powers (inherited from
his equally formidable father.) His left hand imprisons an ungodly mighty
Oni named Bakki, whose influence Nube battles throughout the manga until
they finally achieve a sort of symbiotic peace. During the course of the
manga, Nube fights a pandemonium of Japanese myths and horrors, destroying a
few, stealing the powers of some and sealing others within his scrying
Crystal. Near the end, his severe injuries force him to consume the flesh of
the mermaid Hayame (who didn't mind, since she regenerates) with the same
results as Yuta and Mana. To give you an idea of his power... by vol. 24,
this guy could take on the latest Inuyasha and Naraku combined and win. He's
also extremely smart (if goofy,) would lay his life down for any one of his
students, and is so amiable and easygoing that even his enemies become
allies in no time at all.
b) Nausicaa of the Valley of Wind. Princess of her people, a natural leader
and loved by pretty much everyone due to her strong heart, iron will and
saintly kindness. She's also an astonishing warrior, pilot and strategist,
not to mention a peerless diplomat. She can read the wind currents to fly
anything from her tiny Mehve glider to the gargantuan corvettes of
Torumekia's army. She also possesses the ability to establish emphatic
"links" with other people's hearts, projecting her own psychic image to
them, which also lets her communicate with animals and (possibly)
vegetation.
c) Haku, from Spirited Away. Since it's so recent and widespread, I'll skip
the description for this one. :P

Team Stay In School
a) Kintaro Oe, GoldenBoy. A former college student in his early 20's, who
roams the world looking to increase his education. Possessed of a Lust Powaa
even mightier than Ataru's, but he's a good and noble guy at heart. His most
notable aspect is his amazing ability to learn ANYTHING within moments.
Everything is an educational experience to him. Even racing a motorcycle
babe in his own piddly bicycle.
b) Kazuo Kiriyama, Battle Royale. He puts the Terminator to shame: even
worse than Kintaro, Kiriyama's learning prowess is immense and unlimited.
He's supremely capricous, though: he joined a gang because it would be an
interesting thing to do, he learned to paint just because, and he decided to
play along with the infamous Program by flipping a coin. Unfortunately for
him, all of this boils down to him being completely dead inside ever since
infancy, due to a brain injury suffered during a car crash that killed his
parents and left him without emotions. Unfortunately for everyone else, this
also means that he's an unstoppable, ruthless machine that excels at
everything he does.
c) Shogo Kawada, Battle Royale. He's the perfect foil to Kiriyama. A tough,
burly, no-nonsense guy that irradiates menace, he's really an honest and
honorable person for whom friendship is invaluable. He has had prior
experience with guerrilla warfare, and as such he has mastery of typical
firearms, recon and surveillance, and to top it off he's adept enough with
computers to hack into the most secure systems in the BR world. By the time
I picked him, he has also regained hope in the future as well as an
unflappable drive to help all those in his care.

Team Divinity Ver. 2.0
a) Saori Kido, aka Athena, Saint Seiya --end of the Hades Chapter. Think
Nausicaa times ten, but slightly more distant and aloof, and without the
warrior abilities. Her godlike powers extend at least to weather and slight
cosmic manipulation. She can shine her Cosmo into other people's (and other
gods') hearts and redeem them, and she can also protect her Saints from
DBZ-level attacks.
b) Virgo Gold Saint Shaka, just prior to the Hades Chapter. He's arguably
Athena's most powerful Gold Saint, almost godlike himself in spiritual
power. Vastly intelligent, wise and level-headed, but aloof almost to the
point of rudeness. His attacks are terrifying, his defenses unsurmountable.
It took three of the most powerful Gold Saints to even hurt him, and that
was because he allowed it. He's fond of tossing people all over the Buddhist
planes of existence.
c) Ohma, the Arbiter, from Nausicaa. The Innocent, this is the God Warrior
recovered from Pejite and tamed by Nausicaa. He is a walking nuclear
reactor, with power comparable to a fission bomb. He can "space-bend" to fly
at extremely high speeds, but his Light is poisonous (read: radioactive) to
unprotected creatures. By the time he declares himself to be the Arbiter, he
has values similar to Nausicaa's and is relentless in his pursuit of them.

Team °_° lacks a description because it's the quirky bonus, not meant to be
taken seriously, and to be removed if there's a three-team limit to the
challenge :P

What about characters whose primary gimmick is the ability to summon
their posse, like the preacher's kid from "Haunted Junction" or
Akuma-kun from "Akuma-Kun"? (Mind, certain events in HJ suggest the
School Spirits wouldn't be able to be summoned transdimensionally, but
the Thirteen Disciples of Akuma-kun most certainly can be.)

Hmm...Theme Teams, I guess. All of the following for all three
challenges.

Team Fuji

Doraemon, the Atomic Cat from "Doraemon", towards the end of the manga
so he has the maximum number of useful gadgets shown.

The Smiling Salesman from "Warai Salesman", anywhere in the manga as
his power levels don't seem to flucate much.

Mami Sakura from "Esper Mami", from near the end of the manga (I
haven't seen the end of the manga, so she might lose her powers.
Before that.)

Team Tezuka

Astro Boy from "Astro Boy", the chapter where Dr. Tenma supercharges
him (I think he was fighting Pluto.)

Blackjack from "Blackjack", let's go for late manga so he has maximum
experience under his belt. (Of course, this year there probably won't
be a virus.)

Sharlokku from "Three Eyes Sharlokku", at his maximum power.

Team Devious

Dr. Hell from "Mazinger Z" Near the climax, when he's powered himself
up enough to take on Mazinger in hand-to-hand.

007 from "Cyborg 009" Wherever in the manga he's most powerful.

Arsene Lupin the Third from "Lupin the Third" as of the most recent
movie.

Cheers,

Quick notes: Catgirl from a race of cat people. She can transform into

Quick notes: Basically, she's the anchor. She's calm, cool, and

shuttle and hijack it...

Quick notes: Il Palazzo is a visionary for the future, and has plans
in place for the eventual takeover of the world, however he knows that
each journey begins with one step. He (with the help of subordinate
Excel Excel) defeated his dark side, and now resides in full control of
ACROSS, as That Man, and his 5 lookalikes have been dealt with by
Pedro, Nabeshin, et. al.

Quick notes: A stone monkey demon with a pole that can extend several
feet and weighs several tons. He is constantly hungry, even after he
just ate, hopelessly devoted to Sanzo priests, and once his limiters
are removed (usually by his choice), his power, speed, and attitude go
through the roof and he is almost unstoppable by mortal men & most
other demons as well.

Since the flu kept me from sending my scenarios to Rob and Blade, I'll just
submit a team instead.

I've decided on the old lady team:

Cologne at the time of her introduction (since I don't know Ranma nearly
well enough to know if she changes her power over time)

Genkai before the Dark Tournament begins

Fortuneteller Baba during the Buu saga

What the hell -- I'll put up my ladies against all three scenarios. They may
be crotchety but they're good.

OK, as for general abilities (geesh, you'd think they'd hire
experts for these contests... *grumble**grumble*)... :-p

> >Three teams for three levels:

> >Easy:
> >Angela - Someday's Dreamers

http://www.somedaysdreamers.com/angela.htm
17-year old apprentice mage. Powerful enough to bend and
warp giant landmarks/radio towers with her magic. Calm, quiet,
almost emotionless outwardly; but has a stubborn streak.

> >Kokoro - Kokoro Library

http://www.jvcmusic.co.jp/m-serve/tv/kokosho/chara/index.html
10-year old librarian trainee. Kokoro Library is the place where
small miracles always seem to happen... and Kokoro (whose name
is the same as the library) always seems to be involved.

> >Ban - GetBackers

http://www.animenfo.com/anime/character/display.php?id=1859&n=vpgnac&t=ban_mido
Mido Ban, one of the GetBackers (retrievers... taking back that which
has been stolen). Laid-back, cigarette-smoking, sunglass-wearing
fighter with superb speed and strength. Possesses two "special"
abilities... his "Snake Bite" grip, with the power of 200 kg; and his
"Evil Eye", if he makes direct eye contact with you, you will fall into
your own personal dreamworld for exactly 60 seconds (can only
be used once per 24-hr period).

> >Medium:
> >Ranma/Rella - Cinderella Boy (yes, they count as ONE character)

> Yes, they do.

The owners/operators (do we use the plural "s" here???) of the
R&R Detective Agency. Ranma is clumsy, yet resourceful (has
a fear of heights); Rella is beautiful, outgoing, adventuresome,
rich (let me pause a bit here... *sigh*... ok), has a expert source
of info via computer. But they share one body, and only exist
as themselves for 24 hours, their shared body switches them
out at midnight every night, neither knowing what the other has
done the previous 24 hours.

> >Youko - Juuni Kokki

http://12k.divadrummer.com/major_chara.php
Redhead schoolgirl chosen by the taiho Keiki to become the Empress
of Kei. Very shy and unsure of herself initially, eventually becomes a
confident, strong leader. Wields a sword... is an expert swordswoman
and destroys several youma during her ascent and leadership. Shows
great compassion and understanding; but also has little patience for
those lacking in those qualities and is quick to reprimand them.

> >Rizel - Rizelmine

http://www.pc-moe.com/rizeru/
A 12-year old biologically engineered girl (hey, the team needed an
energetic, puppy-loyal, cute girl!). As for special abilities... well, her
tears are made of nitro-glycerine, so when she cries, things blow up.

> >Hard:
> >Sanzo - Gensomaden Saiyuki

http://www.animechains.com/saiyuki/profile.cfm?id=5
23-year old monk, but not your ordinary kind of monk. No, Sanzo
is a foul-mouthed, booze-swilling, ciggy-puffing, hot-tempered SOB.
Has the Evil Sutra which can quickly eliminate demons, as well as an
a gun which he uses to threaten companions as well as to eliminate
demons.

> >Aika - AIKa

(there are truly no worthy AIKa sites on the web... for shaaaaame)
Salvager supreme. Highly resourceful in any situation. Martial arts
expert, can operate most machinery and weaponry, it seems.
Has an almost-sentient bustier that envelopes her in times of need
and gives her the protection of a body of armor (an ultranate suit)
and the strength to destroy a small army single-handedly.

> >Poemi - Puni Puni Poemi (if she isn't killed off by Sanzo before the
> >challenge begins)

http://www.animeacademy.com/library/poemi/poemi.html
An X-rated Excel. Think of what Usagi of Sailor Moon would be
like if she were secretly replaced by Excel of Excel Saga. Poemi
has a transformation, she kicks the asses of several other "magical
girls" in the opening sequence. She's a fast-talker, although she
rarely says much (like I said, Sanzo will probably shoot her before
the mission begins). Oh, and she has a fish that turns into a magical
wand and helps her transform. O_O;;; The link above isn't that
helpful; but most fans that have seen it haven't recovered enough
yet to put proper images or reviews to website...

D-Chance.

Hey Rob, are you taking down the teams or will we have to remember
who we have?

Okay here's my team

Easy team

Team Mighty Ones

Ran Kotoboki-Super GALS: The one the only #1 GAL of Shibuya! She's
savvy, trendy and powerful in a fight plus she knows how to have fun
in Tokyo on only 5 yen!!!! Okay she's not too smart but she has
integrity and is the protector of Shibuya against the vile schemes
of those nasty Gals of Bukaro and the Tan faces. I pick her from
the beginning batches of episodes

Sarah-Now and Then, Here and There: trapped and pregnant in a
horrible Earth billions in the future where humanity has descended
into barbarism, fighting over scant resources while the Sun is dying.
Sarah has brought a chance for peace and hope amongst the people of
that world. I pick her from the end of NTHT

Saionji-Revolutionary Girl Utena: 1st rate kendo fighter and bottom
rate boyfriend. He's brutal, egotistical, weak-willed, obsessive,
and kinda ingrateful as well as immaturely cruel. Still somewhere
deep, deep, deep, deep, deep inside there's a streak of good in him.
I pick Saionji from anywhere up to the Black Rose Saga

Medium

Team 'Roid Boys

Gatsu-Berserk: this muscle-bound one-eyed swordsman has earned his
reputation as the 100 man slayer. Demon killer extraordinaire and
survivor of many tragedies and hardships, Gatsu is troubled by his
rage and hatred but his indomitable will keeps him going. Such is
his will, that he has come to escape Destiny's grasp in a world where
a cruel Godhead has always controlled the fate of humanity. Standing
outside of destiny, he plots to bring the ruin of the man fated to
be king. I pick him in his accursed armor form (his sword has become
filled with the essence of hatred from the ghosts of those murdered
by the Apostles and his armor keeps him from feeling pain plus does
quick and dirty emergency repairs (such as ramming metal rods into
broken bones), it also has bonded to him so he can't remove it and
it makes him even less able to control his berserker rage

Louie-Rune Soldier: this muscle-bound magician is a godawful wizard
and even worse fighter. But man, he can scare ogres with his biceps.
Single-handedly killing a rampaging boar by throwing it high in the
air and then punching it, Louis doesn't know the word fear (that's
because he's too stupid to know how to use a dictionary). He brings
enthusiasm and big-heartedness to this team plus he does come a long
way over the course of his adventures despite his stupidity. I pick
him in his later days when he's grown up mentally a bit

Gateau-Sorcerer Hunter: big, beefy and bisexual. He doesn't do squat
amongst the Sorcerer Hunters except grunt work and hitting on Marron.
Still he is macho (or so he says) and he always honors his parents
with his magnificent posing. I pick him from when he's so unimportant
that he barely gets screen time

Hard

Team Russian Roulette cuz it's interesting

Tsukasa-.Hack//SIGN: according to all the fanfiction written by girls,
Tsukasa is .Hack//STUD or he was until they found that he's actually
a she. Kind of understandable that the number of Mary Sue fics went
down dramatically. Tsukasa is self-loathing, regularly abused,
procrastinating, abrasive, rude, cowardly and rather nihilistic
initially. But Tsukasa is fairly pain resistant and has a large
knowledge of movie trivia and even a hint of mischief. I pick her from
the early parts of .Hack//SIGN, note that she has the spells of the
Wave Master class but I don't want her to have the Guardian Monster of
hers (it was on loan anyways), but can she have her accompanying theme
scores?

Chief Maid Sanada-UFO Princess Walkure: fanatically loyal to Princess
Walkure, this maid seems to have little trouble doing unethical things
such as turning a large number of women into Catgirl maids to be at the
beck and call of her beloved Princess. In addition to the dreaded
Catgirl transformation gun, she has more traditional energy weapons of
mass destruction as well as the necessary items for fulfilling her maid
duties. And she can always order more stuff from the Intergalactic E-bay.
I pick her from when she still had the Catgirl transformation gun

Ryo Soma-Argento Soma: mutilated anti-hero who makes a faustian deal
to become a double-agent inside an anti-alien task force. Ryo Soma is
a genius metallurgist and expert in sciences in general. He's also a
crack fighter pilot and resourceful.

Staying on sidelines, scratching their asses are my substitute team
for all Challenges. Note that since no one's a scratch anywhere these
guys stay on the bleachers

Team Good for what ails you

Ayato Kamina-Rahxephon: considering that his name means "to find God,
he has the will" and his mech means "Sword of Rah" (the Egyptian sun
god), he has serious calibre on hand. Such is the Rahxephon that it
can alter time and space to recreate history as the pilot desires.
Ayato has girls eating out of hand because of his bishonen good looks
and he's a very talented painter/drawer. The Rahxephon has other
powers as well those these are more the traditional attack and defense
abilities plus it is incredibly strong even by mech standards.

Youko Nakajima-12 Kingdoms: honor student turned queen of a magical
land. Youko is innately immortal and can only be done in by
decapitation with a divine weapon designed for dealing with minor
immortals. She herself has a demon familiar bonded physically to her
which gives her superhuman fighting skills, strength and agility.
In addition she carries 2 valuable artifacts of her kingdom, a powerful
magic sword that allows her to scry anywhere in the world and a magic
orb that can remove curses, heal people, provide warmth and significantly
reduce the need for sleep and food. As a queen she has owns a royal
army including the tame demons and equipment of the kingdom-they're her
property.

Tohru Honda-Fruits Basket: one of the kindest and gentlest characters
in anime. Tohru has fantastic ability to endure hardship, can befriend
almost anyone and is almost insanely optimistic. She maybe an onigiri
in a fruits basket but this girl has almost everyone in that world
love her.

[snip]

What the heck, I'll give this a shot (delurking to do so). Mind you, I
wouldn't say my team is the most effective one out there, but I'll try to
avoid being boring... n_n

Team Cute and Marketable will be taking on all three challenges, and
consists of:

Kirby (from the 'Hoshi no Kirby' anime, brought to the US as 'Kirby: Right
Back At Ya!') -- a short, pink, bouncy ball with decorations. He can fly,
swim, squash, and stretch; he's also got an apparently bottomless appetite,
and only rarely has he encountered food he couldn't stomach. His most
famous ability, of course, is being able to inhale objects approximately
his size and gain the ability to use them as weapons; in some cases, this
means spontaneously creating things (inhaling a fireball lets him shoot
fire, while inhaling explosives lets him create bombs), while in others, it
grants him skills (inhaling a hammer doesn't just resize the hammer to suit
him; it lets him use it effectively in a fight). He's quite brave and can
use his powers creatively. On the down side, he's basically a
six-year-old, mentally and emotionally, and has a tendency to be more
interested in eating and having fun than saving the world. He's also quite
friendly, even to people who are actively interested in killing him, as
long as they aren't trying to do it right that second. His power level
doesn't vary, at least in the episodes I've seen. He has access to the
Warp Star, in case the team needs to fly somewhere, but it's kind of small,
so someone might have to be strapped to the roof... (Since the anime
doesn't have any humans to compare him to, I'm arbitrarily setting his
height at two feet.)

Mistral (from the .hack games) -- a tooth-rottingly energetic girl who also
happens to be a Wavemaster in the World, an MMORPG with a habit of putting
people into comas when they visit the wrong zone. Mysteriously, it's her
avatar in the World who's participating in the challenge, not her physical
body-- but it's probably for the best, as this allows her access not only
to her powerful magical attacks (centering around the lightning element, as
she's drawn from the end of the first game, the only one I've played so
far, and all the best equipment is Lightning type) but also her potent
healing abilities (she can heal the wounds of any one person, and anyone
fairly close to that person, trivially; she can also raise the freshly dead
with little more effort). She's also a pretty good cook, so the team won't
go hungry. On the down side, she's a bit on the ditzy side and convinced
this is all some new level in the World, so she's apt to take the challenge
less than seriously. She has a small supply of Antidotes and
Restoratives-- not enough to cure a world plague, but enough to keep things
from going pear-shaped if somebody on the team gets a status ailment.

Butterfree (from Pokemon) -- yeah, the yellow rat gets all the fame, but
darn it, I like Butterfree. A jumbo-sized flying bug that was Ash's first
catch and grew into an important part of his team before flying off into
the sunset with his lady friend. He's the member of the team most likely
to take problems seriously, but his abilities are more oriented around
messing with people than doing straight damage: he can release powder from
his wings to poison, paralyze, or knock out opponents, release powerful
gusts of wind by flapping vigorously, or tackle them with his pudgy body.
On the down side, he talks less than Kirby does, leaving Mistral as the
spokesman of the group. He comes with a +3 Scarf of Dashingness, and is
taken from the episode of his last appearance (in the first season, at
least).

Well, that ought to do it. The team will do well in a fight, with Kirby and
Butterfree tag-teaming the baddies while Mistral provides healing and fire
support; if they need to be sneaky, Butterfree can knock guards out,
Mistral can fry security cameras, and Kirby can squish himself into places
the others can't reach. Diplomacy will be trickier, as Mistral's the only
one who can talk, but they'll muddle through... somehow. And, of course,
if any disasters break out, Kirby and Butterfree will be airlifting people
to Mistral for healing. They'll take on all three challenges. Wish them
luck!

He is in Headmasters. He is one of the guys who leaves
with Rodimus to look for New Cybertron. I like that he has
the same speech defect in Japanese as in English, except instead
of Me Grimlock, it is Ora Grimlock or what not. Funny thing about
Headmasters is Prowl is in the first episode and he died in the movie.

Here is a picture of Grimlock from Headmasters:

Not even *Doraemon*?!

Capsule descriptions, then.

Doraemon: A robotic cat from the future. Has encyclopedic knowledge,
but his primary usefulness is the pouch on his stomach, which is
actually a storage tesseract filled with "sufficiently advanced
technology". Among the literally hundreds of gadgets inside: a time
machine (which *can* change the past), flying propeller beanies, a
shrinking tunnel, spaceships, submersibles, a TV that allows you to
enter and interact with the programs, a filter that turns soda pop
into synthohol, a megaphone that temporarily alters reality according
to what you say into it, a potion that reverses your reaction to heat
and cold, a paralysis ray, etc. Most of them are reusable, too.

However, Doraemon suffers from a flaw in his construction that
makes him lazy, greedy and careless about consequences. In the
storyline, he's also handicapped by being owned by Nobita, a lazy, dim
and easily bullied eight-y-o boy. Fortunately for the team, Nobita
and his gang don't come along.

Smiling Salesman: A snake oil salesman par excellance. He (as if by
magic) knows the weak spot of potential customers, and always has
exactly the thing they want. Usually, this ends up destroying the
weak or foolish customer (it's the thing they want, not what they
need), but every so often the Salesman will reward virtue. His powers
of persuasion are top-notch.

Is quite possibly demonic in origin.

Mami Sakura: A bobbysoxer and mutant with psionic abilities. Her
powers include: Telepathy (requires touch or a conductive medium,
unless she knows you very well; can enter and manipulate dreams),
Telekinesis (can lift several tons, and independently manipulate
multiple objects. She can use it to fly. However, she must have her
hands free to direct the TK), Teleportation (up to several hundred
yards, but only to get out of the way of an oncoming object. Mami
wears a small brooch that fires beads, and points it at herself to
trigger the teleportation), and Danger Sense (city-wide, it sounds to
her as if a telephone is ringing in her head. It gives her distance
and direction, but does not specify the nature of the danger.) She's
also an experienced nude model and a good painter for her age.

Mami's powers tend to get out of control when she is ill or
drunk, and she's not used to dealing with other superbeings (only one
other in the series up to the point I saw, and he was a preteen.)

> And one more I don't know...

Sharlokku: Is the last of the mysterious three-eyed race that once
ruled the Earth. When his third eye is covered, Sharlokku is a shy,
goofy boy with a good heart. When it's uncovered, he shows
supergenius intellect, trident-fighting skills (with a trident he
controls mentally), acrobatics, the ability to control technology
(particularly that of lost civilizations) and the gift of kitbashing
together machines that will do anything he needs (within reason, of
course; he can't defy the laws of manga nature.)

His primary drawback is that the longer Sharlokku is free, the
more megalomaniacal he becomes, and the less concerned about the puny
human cattle that now infest his planet.

Dr. Hell: Mad scientist who uncovered (some of) the secrets of lost
Atlantis. Like most mad scientists, he's adept in all branches of
science, but specializes in biological manipulation. He created (or
recreated) numerous giant monsters in repeated attempts to conquer the
world, and has brought people back from the dead. (Admittedly, fusing
two half-corpses of different genders together and then reanimating
the result is not the way I'd go about it, but they call him "mad" for
a reason.)

He's really ugly, and iirc is supersized at the time I'm drawing
him from, so stealth is out for this character. He also is constantly
thwarted by teenagers with pure hearts and giant robots. Oh, and he's
a megalomaniac who wants to take over the world. But no one's
perfect.

007: A actor at one time so brilliant he was named "Great Britain",
he was on the skids when abducted by the Black Ghost organization and
turned into a cyborg. His body is now able to transform itself
(including color) to look like anyone or anything 007 can visualize,
gaining the physical abilities of the form. For example, if 007 turns
into a fish, his gills will allow him to breathe water. A bird, he
can fly. A buzzsaw, he can cut through wood. This does not seem to
apply to superpowers as such: If he turned into the Flash, it
wouldn't actually make him any faster. This unusual body structure
also makes 007 very hard to kill. 007's sidearm is a blaster pistol
that can be set to paralyze, stun or kill.

007 is fairly cynical, and likes to goof around a lot with his
powers. He's also a bit of a coward.

Um, please correct me if I'm wrong, Wasp-sama, but isn't Lucca a video game
character, and not an anime or manga character (unless a CT anime or manga
slipped under the radar somehow)?

Please correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't Blade and Rob already address
this? :P

At my prompting, I might add, even though the question ended up being moot
in my case.

I wonder if some of the new people playing know what they're in for,
judging from some of the team choices. IIRC, the first year's
challenge was DBZs' Cell absorbing Godzilla and going on a "Destroy
All Cities" world tour--and that was the EASY challenge!O_O

We made a rule revision - as long as it's a Japanese game, it's okay.
Chrono Trigger is a Japanese game, so Lucca's acceptable.

a very astute observer, and learns quickly by example.
She is capable of personal initiative, but rarely acts.
Kiku does not possess super speed or strength;

Milfeulle is also a world class dessert chef.

As a military officer, she is assigned an Angel
Frame, an interstellar fighter which is tuned
specifically to her nervous system, so that no
one else can use it; this is a safeguard against
such advanced technology being misused.
An Angel Frame can be equipped with many
different combat options depending on the

sidearms and assault rifles as well.
She does own the utensils in her kitchen,

There _is_ a Chrono Trigger OVA that was made for a convention of some
kind - it's about the monsters having some kind of party, I think. It's
rubbish ^_^

Rubbish?! RUBBISH?!

How COULD you, sirrah?!

How DARE you call that masterpiece of an OAV RUBBISH?!

It was sheer brilliance! BRILLIANCE!

Why, it even featured a dazzling musical number by one of the biggest stars
of the game itself!

Still thinking about my Medium team, but my daughter just IM'ed me her
team. Here it is:

S

P

O

L

E

R

S

A

H

E

A

D

Edward Elric (Full Metal Alchemist)

My daughter and I have only seen up to Episode 3 and Episode 2 is the
one that, so far, shows him at his most powerful. Very powerful
magic-user, although he functions in a steampunk world and his magic
follows fairly scientific principles (conservation of matter, in
particular). He can convert any object or material into one of
equivalent mass. He can even fix machines that way. He can't raise
the dead, though. His attempt to do so cost him an arm and a leg
(literally). If you think that's bad, you should see his brother!
Anyway, Elric has a cybernetic arm and leg that makes him a very
strong and dangerous fighter.

Pacifica Casull (Scrapped Princess)

As of Episode 12--she gets stronger later, but my daughter and I
haven't seen that yet). Pacifica is the "Scrapped Princess" herself.
She's whiney, spoiled, a lousy fighter...and the savior of the Earth
5400 years in the future! Her strengths are her abilities 1) to
resist mind control and lift the mind control of anyone around her and
2) to get people around her to help her (not, AFAIK, part of her
anti-mind control talents, just being a typical kawaii 15-year-old
girl).

Micheal Lee (Witch Hunter Robin)

As of Episode 4. Michael is a $UP3R L337 H4X0R (hacker) who made the
mistake of getting inside STNJ's mainframe. Consequently, he was
given a choice he couldn't refuse--join STNJ as their resident
<s>hacker</s> network information gathering expert. Other than Lebia
Mavelick from Silent Mobius, he probably has the best combination of
computer sk1llz and tolerance for being around magic users of any
character in any anime licensed in North America. That's a good
thing, considering who he's working with!

As you can tell, my daughter likes to use very recent characters.
Last year, she tried to use Magical Girl Puni Puni Poemi and Purin
from "Tokyo Mew Mew" and I got her to change her mind and use
characters that were 1) more familiar and 2) in the case of Puni Puni
Poemi, more suited for her age. This year, I'm not so worried.

I'll tell you at which level my daughter decides to use this team when
I post my medium team. Type at you all then!

I think the only guy on my team that would need an intro blurb
would be the guy I'm replacing Yohko Mano with on my Medium
challenge team:

Jo Azuma (Harmageddon):

Enormously powerful (but inexperienced) psi-talent. Can use
powers fly at speeds surpassing Mach 1 and walk around in volcanic
heat in only mild discomfort, throw energy bolts and erect large
and powerful barriers. Posesses some telepathic powers. At the end
of the OVA, his "true" power emerged (Apparently all powerful
espers in his world can do the things he'd been doing previously,
although not at his level of power.): He can generate both blazing
heat (enough to burn his handprint into solid rock) and freezing
cold. (Although I think he needed the combined power of the other
espers to generate Absolute Zero like he did at the end.)

So that would make my Official This Time It's Final rosters:

Easy:
Science - Bulma (GT version)
Paranormal- Sakura Kinomoto (end of CCS)
Muscle - Piccolo (Cell Games version)

Medium:
Science - Washuu (TM Movie 1 version)
Paranormal - Jo Azuma (end of Harmageddon)
Muscle - Mirai Trunks (post-time chamber, pre-smoked by Cell)

Hard:
Science - Skuld (O!MG manga)
Magic - Pretty Sammy (near the end of Magical Project S)
Power - Pan (GT - NOT the Goku Special version!)

Cool! I always wanted to try one of these. Let's try some teams where all the
members have something in common. I think you'll know 'em all but just in
case...

(very minor spoilers possible)

Easy Challenge

Saki ('Steel Angel Kurumi'), from the end of the SAK2 OAV series --
Super-powered android maid with an angel's heart. Less powerful than her
'sisters' Kurumi and Karinka, but smarter. Shy, selfless, and devoted.

Alielle ('El Hazard'), from the end of the first OAV series -- Small, cute,
oversexed servant girl. Fairly smart, but has no powers aside from being
adorable.

Yuna Kagurazaka ('Galaxy Fraulein Yuna'), post-GFY Returns -- Savior of the
Light. Bouncy, happy girl who tries to make friends with everyone she meets.
Possesses powered armor and the strongest combat mech in her Universe.

Medium Challenge

Eimi Yoshikawa ('APCCG Nuku-Nuku'), from the end of the OAVs -- Super-powered
android girl with a few stability issues, both technical and mental.

Excel ('Excel Saga'), from some point after the 'Fist of the North Star' parody
episode -- A lunatic of astounding loyalty and persistence who is on good terms
with the Great Will of the Macrocosm and can use a shiatsu attack that turns
people into sickeningly cute 'Digi Charat'-style characters.

Magical Girl Pixy Misa ('Magical Project S'), from the end of the series --
Unhinged, egotistical magical girl who used to be evil but mostly got over it.
Can create monsters of variable and often dubious usefulness from whatever
happens to be available and gets to kick people in the head while they're
posing. Can do a lot more damage in conjunction with other magical girls.

Hard Challenge

Nabeshin ('Excel Saga'), from episode 25 -- Anime director and action hero with
a dimensionally-transcendent afro and the ability to power up to
Super-Afro-Jin. Always knows _somebody_ involved in the plot, usually from the
old days in Pogota.

Ginji Kawai ('Magical Project S'), from the end of the series -- Sasami's Dad.
Is apparently good at nearly everything and licensed for most things --
fireman, ninja, astronaut, SWAT officer, waiter -- and can use 'Dandy Power' to
charm women or female monsters.

Xellos ('Slayers'), from the end of 'Try' -- Mazoku Trickster Priest. Nearly
indestructible, possessed of tremendous magical powers, plays tennis well and
looks good in drag, but is vulnerable to happy songs and works for the Forces
of Destruction. Knows a lot, but only tells just enough to stir up trouble.

This should be fun. Thanks for running it.

everything you could want in a maid. She cooks, cleans, and
occasionally turns back alien invasions singlehandedly. Aside from
excellent culinary and domestic skills, Mahoro is a Vespar combat
android, with unmatched hand to hand skills. As far as I can tell,
she owns her gun, a flightpack affectionately called "the sylpheed",
an android "cat" support mecha, and her maid's uniform. Despite what
appears to be an inferiority complex regarding her bust, Mahoro is
really only flat chested by anime standards, but this unfortunately
has led to a pathological hatred of all thing's ecchi.
> May (Hand Maid May)
Most days, the maid of the Saotome household is diligent,
hardworking, polite and pleasant. Like most maids, she cooks, cleans,
answers the phone and otehrwise keeps things running, which in iteself
would be no real accomplishment, save for the fact that May is the
size of your typical barbie doll. (With three sizes that seem Barbie
like in proportion as well!) Minus the combat skills (how much
fighting can a 7" tall robot really do anyway?) we'll think of her as
Mini Mahoro. (We'll take her before she gets bigger when <spoiler
deleted>.) As a cyberdoll, she's able to connect to the net, change
the channel on the television, and with a little programming help,
destroy computer viruses capable of decimating entire android
populations. The downside? Aside from her size would be the price.
I'm hoping cyberdyne doesn't try to cash that check that I sent them,
cuz at $1.45 million, it's likely to bounce.
> Mer (Popotan)
Most days, the Maid in the traveler's household is nothing you'd
really want in a maid. She cooks adequately, and can seemingly keep
an even enormous Christmas theme'd mansion clean, but it seems she'd
rather lounge around, order massive quantities of takeout food, and
generally take it easy. Mer seems to have a personality that could be
kindly described as "acerbic". Despite being flat chested by even the
most generous standards, Mer is not above the "service" of the sort
you'd expect from an anime maid, and despite what appears to be a
complex regarding her chest size has a disticntly approving attitude
towards all things ecchi. Jiggle factor aside, Mer is also the
appointed guardian of the travelers, with exemplary combat skills,
most notably super human speed. Despite appearances, she's got a
pretty good grasp of tactics, (to speak nothing of her complete lack
of tact..) and appears to own a selection of gun and grenade based
weaponry in addition to her dozen or so identical maid uniforms.

>
> Medium: Good cop, Bad Cop. Robo Cop
> Noa Izumi (Patlabor TV)

Ever the genki girl, officer Izumi is a second division labor
pilot in the employ of the Tokyo police. She's quite good at piloting
these 12 meter tall mecha, even if her aim with the 120mm "pistol"
leaves a little to be desired. Off duty, miss Izumi is more than
capable of drinking most folks well INTO the floor, to speak nothing
the table. She's got a mischevous, almost impish streak to her, but a
strong sense of justice, and almost always trys to do the "right
thing". Noa knows she's not the smartest, prettiest, or most
atheletic, but she always does her best! Sadly, she is occasionally
subject to temper-tantrums (in a mecha no less!), and has a borderline
neurotic attachment to Alphonse (her childhood dog, and the pet name
of her labor). Aside from day to day trivialities, Noa owns a motor
motor scooter of indeterminate brand, a second division labor pilot's
uniform, and from a past position, a traffic division uniform.
Surprisingly, she does not regularly own or carry a fire arm, nor does
she own her mecha. (Although should the need arise, she seems to have
no problem what-so-ever with "borrowing" it.)
> Nene Romanova (BGC 2032)
Ever the genki girl, officer Romanova is a tactical dispatch
officer in the employ of Tokyo's AD-Police. A computer console
operator AND programmer by trade, Nene is always there feeding Tokyo's
finest all the information they need to keeps the streets safe from
rampaging bio-mechanical androids, terrorist bank robbers, or even the
occasional insane speeding motorcyclist/pop singer. By night, she's
an elite member of the Knight Sabers, a vigilante (And Mercenary!)
power/suited fighting group of women who work to keep the streets safe
from rampaging bio-mechanical androids, terrorist bank robbers, or
even the occasional insane speeding man/car hybrid. As a tokyo police
officer, she owns a police uniform, and has ready access to all sorts
of neat police databases and the like. Nene seems to know a little
about everything. She doesn't "own" her hard suit per se, but under
the assumption that there's some sort of world threatening
(bubblegum?) crisis looming, we'll "Hire" her for the duration of the
event. I'm hoping the knight sabers doesn't try to cash that check
that I sent them, cuz at $1.45 million, it's likely to bounce.

> Tachikoma (Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex)

Ever the genki tank, tactial support weapon Tachikoma is an
experimental AI (with a vocal module programmed to sound like a
Japanese Schoolgirl no less!) that lives in the body of a 4 legged
armored fighting vehicle. With the curiosity of a child, Tachikoma
seems to view the world in general, and police work specifically, as
one big game for her amusement. In the employ of Japan's "section 9",
Tachikoma is often called upon for a variety of missions, and has at
her disposal twin arm mounted machine guns, smoke launchers, grappling
cables, and a really cool "stealth-mode" that lets her sneak by things
invisibly. On the downside, Tachikoma has what appears to be a
physical addction to organic oils (Quite a feat for a cybernetic
organism!), disturbingly kleptomaniacal behavior, and a tendancy to
question her orders. (And whine about them too!)
>
> Hard: Unpredictable, Unbelivable, Undead
> Alucard (Hellsing, with the new gun)
A vile and vicious blood sucking monster, Alucard manages to be
both the vampire of legend, and the bad-boy that your momma told you
not to hang out with. Long black hair, thin features, circular rimmed
glasses, and red trenchcoat/hat, Alucard resembles nothing more than
John Lennon, on a bad acid trip, cosplaying Vash the stampede, while
reading for the role of Knives. Bound by blood pact, Alucard is the
resident-monster of the Hellsing organization, and is (at least on
paper!) duty bound to help them destroy any vampires that might
treaten the fabric of British Society. Burdened with this duty for
many hundreds of years, Alucard has both the weight of experience, and
an insight into the dark side of humanity that is unmatched by even
the most hardened of criminals, and oh boy does it show! Alucard
doesn't weild destruction so much as embody it. He's nasty incarnate.
Thankfully he's loyal to anyone who can earn his respect. Sadly,
earning it usually involves tragedy beyond what most of us mere
mortals are expected to survive. In theory, as a Hellsing retainer,
he has access to most of that organization's intelligence assets,
firepower, and facilities. In practice, he needs none of that. All
Alucard seems to need is his bad-ass guns, (did you see the barrel on
that thing?!?) and a target.
> Miyu (Vampire Princess Miyu TV, Present Day)
A quiet, contemplative, blood sucking monster, Miyu manages to be
both the tragic lolita cursed by fate and modern gothic cliche, and
the sweet little girl that Mommy wishes all your friends were like.
She regularly attends school, generally getting good marks, and while
she doesn't seem to be in any school clubs, Miyu is presentable, and
respectable. Of course what mommy doesn't know is that Miyu is also
the one chosen to seal away the Dark Shinma, the vampire princess.
Burdened with this duty for many hundreds of years, Miyu has both the
weight of experience, and an insight into the dark side of humanity
that is unmatched by even the most hardened of criminals, and yet she
still holds on to her compassion. While Miyu is not "soft-on-crime"
by any means, she's just and fair, and for the most part, without
unjustified malice. (Quite a feat for a vampire!), As a japanese
school girl, she owns a cute seifuku, some charms from her
girlfriends, and a book bag. As a shinma-hunter she owns a kimono
that she ties FUNERAL style, the ability to summon and manipulate FIRE
ITSELF, and the ability to send deserving humans into a comatose
"dream-bliss state", where they can finally reach peace. She doesn't
really "own" Larva, or that nasty little bunny demon, but from what
I've seen, whereever she goes, they go, and Larva at least is a force
you do not want to reckon.
> Mosquiton (Master Mosquiton OAV)
A spineless, craven, cowardly little excuse for a blood sucking
monster, Mosquiton manages to be neither the fearsome monster of
legend, nor the for the most part a worthwhile companion, until you
put a little blood into him. As the servant of O-part hunter
extraordinaire Inaho, Mosquiton is often set upon, abused, and even
outright killed. He doesn't experience suffering, he embodies it.
Mosquiton is "Whipped" incarnate. Thankfully, he has at least the
typical powers of a vampire, and the help of two demonic servants who
quite literally are fire and ice. As a vampire, and only a vampire,
he owns his coffin, a typically vampiric, cape, a decent pair of
sunglasses, and his fangs. He doesn't really "own" Yuki or Houno, but
where he goes, they go, and they at least are a force to be reckoned
with. Actually, for the most part, he goes where Inaho goes, so I
suppose the trick is getting HER to respond to the new years
challenenge. I suppose I could sell her the information regarding the
location of an o-part as payment. (I had to sell my last one on
e-bay, and it didn't quite cover the costs of buying a cyberdoll, or
hiring a knight saber. But I do have the buyer's address...) :-)

I assume this rules out all the other members of the GD cast, too.

How about if someone can point to where a non-anime/manga

Would that work?

How about a live action show based on an anime/manga, like Pretty

As I have done before, I chose to compete with... IRON CHEF FRENCH!

No, wait, wrong show.

original you can accept as being just truth, justice, and the
Japanese way; with William Shatner as the Chairman and all this
transferred into an Americanized setting, the USA version seems
so... contrived...)

OK, I chose to participate in ALL THREE CHALLENGES, and to use the
same teams as last year for each! So you and Blade can't claim
it's a suprise. And now, to introduce my teams, and - as
requested (mutters about anime newbies like Blade and RK not knowing
everything about every series) - provide descriptions of them:

EASY CHALLENGE: My FAVORITES!

ChibiUsa (SAILOR MOON)! Description: The embodiment of all that
is PINK AND GOOD in the world! Short, kawaii, fearless, able to
transform into a magic girl with a BIG, VIRILE, STUDLY white winged
pegasus as her pet! I want her from the end of the SuperS series,
just before the horsie flies off...

Mihoshi (TENCHI MUYO OAV)! Description: She may look like a
blonde beach bunny, and a walking dumb blonde joke, but Detective
First Class Mihoshi of the Space Police always gets her whatever
it is she's after! Somehow. Mainly through incredible luck and the
use - sometimes not in the ways the builders intended - of various
gizmos and gadgets. Amazing levels of destruction. And perhaps a
hidden, 'Get Smart' sort of competance... This is the Mihoshi
from the end of episode 7, with (repaired) spaceship, will travel.

Nabiki Tendo (RANMA 1/2)! Description: An attractive, extremely
competant wheel-dealer, with an amazing ability to manipulate
people in ways that result in her making money. Has no powers but,
if you shake her hand, count your fingers when you get your hand
back. I don't think the 'when' matters, as long as she's normal.

MEDIUM CHALLENGE: It's an all DR SLUMP show!

Arale-chan! Description: Arale-chan is ADORABLE!!! She's also
an android in the form of a little girl with thick glasses. She has
unlimited strength, superhuman speed, awesome ability, is pretty hard
to damage, and absolutely no common sense. I mean, really, she acts
just like a totally innocent six year old with superpowers. I want
her at any time she's fully functional, intact, fully powered, and
no different than she usually is. Which, in Dr. Slump, is actually
a significant condition (remembers the time Arale-chan wound up
the size of a mountain...)

Ga-chan! Description: A small winged humanoid with green hair
and antenna, Ga-chan hatched from an egg found back in dinosaur
times. He can fly, eat anything, fire totally destructive blasts
from his antenna, and is actually a baby angel. I'd like him from
any normal (so to speak) time after he hatches, and before there
are two of him.

Turbo! A human toddler, Turbo was accidently killed by aliens
who, horrified, brought him back. Not knowing what was normal for
humans, though, they kind of missed the mark... Turbo can fly, has
telekinesis, and genius on a Washuu level. As with the others, I
want him any time after his transformation, but when he's normal.
For the Dr. Slump universe, that is.

HARD CHALLENGE: Bring on the Bad Guys, part II!

Galaxia (SAILOR MOON)! Description: She's bad! She's mad!
She's golden! She's Galaxia, the most powerful Senshi in the
universe! Unbeatable in combat, capable of hurling massively
destructive blasts OR beams that will rip your starseed out of your
bod with her bracelets, a world destroyer of tremendous power,
Galaxia is actually a good girl, but she's possessed by the evil
of Chaos... This is the Galaxia of just before her final battle
with Sailor Moon

Freeza (DRAGONBALL Z)! Description: Looking like an evolved
lizard with a perpetual sneer, Freeza is also a world destroyer, and
also of immense power; except that in his case, he's not possessed,
he's just evil and pretty happy about it. From when? Final form,
just before he goes all to pieces...

Kagato (TENCHI MUYO OAV)! Description: There's cool. There's
cooler. And then there's Kagato. Anyything Ryouko and Washuu can
do, he can, too. AND play the organ, besides! He's also
extremely cunning and deceptive, and a brilliant - if very
egocentric - scientist. From just before he and Tenchi fight for
the last time...

Right! Let's see what you can send at my chosen teams and myself
that my imagination can't weasel us out of!

(Also, as mentioned, I need clarification on what some of my
characters possess. I mean, OBVIOUSLY you don't want to break up
ChibiUsa and the horsie! Even if Pegasus is another character,
they're so CUTE together! And the source of most of her power in
SuperS... And besides, don't forget how in the first Challenge
ChibiMoon wound up riding Pegasus (bareback) and strafing Godcella
from the air with Pink Sugar Heart Attackus! SURELY you would not
want to deprive the folks of the chance to see THAT again!

(And why shouldn't I call you Shirley?)

Ditto for Mihoshi and her space ship! I mean, Mihoshi isn't Mihoshi
if she isn't crashing into something or blasting off at supersonic
speed with her ship! And if you have the ship, you've GOT to have
the ship's computer...

Also...

Kagato has the Souja, Galaxia has her phone booth teleporter, and
Freeza has major attitude. Any problems with those?)

Bleh. I can't remember who was going to be in my Team No Respect, but I'll
try to put together my serious team.

1. Duke Fleed from UFO Robot Grendizer. I assume he gets Grendizer, since
he stole it fair and square, and he drives it around in nearly every
episode. I don't think Duke or Grendizer itself became significantly
stronger or weaker at any point in the series, but I'll take him from the
last point in the show in which Grendizer was in perfect repair.
2. Cibo from BLAME! She was useful enough last year. From the Toha Heavy
Idustries Arc, where she had and was in complete control of the Safeguard
body.
3. Jotaro Kujo from JoJo's Bizarre Adventure. Granted, this leaves me
without a mystic on my team, but he's just so damn cool! And, really, being
able to stop time is nothing to sneeze at. Anyhow, I'd take him from the
final scene of series 3, where he's recovered from the fight with Dio, but
his time stopping ability is still at its peak.
4. Me from reality. I do have one or two useful skills, after all.
