Hmmm... that was quite the retro overdose... but fun in its own way. The first
episode of Cobra the Animation felt a lot like doing "Lupin III in Space". What
we have here is a remake of a very early 80s sci-fi action series that captures
the spirit of those times very well.

It also nearly captures the look of the times too - it's almost too bad that
they had to put in that 3DCG - the rest of the animation looked so much like
something from the 80s that it was scary.

This is a very traditional macho action series with a goofy but ultra-competent
hero who happens to be somewhat cyborgized, plenty of barely-dressed babes (many
of whom are rather deadly themselves), tough monsters, lots of things that get
blown up, plenty of blood, and tons of really dumb jokes.

BTW ďż˝ this will likely confuse younger viewers, but, at least as far as the
first episode goes, all of the nearly naked women in the show are obviously
grown up Women, and not little girls. Yes, Kiddies, at one time anime used Women
in sexual situations, and not children ďż˝ scary, no? That's why many of us Old
Farts like Retro.

The dialog is deliberately corny as hell and quite hilarious for it. The BGM is
straight out of the 80s. Come to think of it, even the background designs are
straight out of the early 80s ďż˝ when is the last time you saw a disco ball in a
modern anime?

It isn't likely to rival Mazinger Z as far as remakes go, but I do have to say
that "Co-bra" surpasses the likes of the other Winter 2010 anime so far like
"Chu-Bra" by light years.

In any event, if you feel in the mood for some low brow, old fashioned,
unpretentious fun that is a throwback to years-of-old, give the first episode of
Cobra the Animation a try.

I'm confused. Are you saying someone's RE-DOING Cobra, or has someone
FINALLY brought over the original Cobra TV series?

It's a brand new remake of the original series. The animation and character
designs look just like they came out of an early 80s OAV, except that there is
modern (but not very impressive) 3DCG for mecha animation.

"Cobra the Animation" is a collection of new OAVs, not the old Space
Cobra TV series. 30th anniversary of Cobra and all.

Damn. I was hoping I could finally get a copy of the original series,
which I have on VHS but the copy sucks and there's no translation.

Did they keep the actual Cobra OP? And from your description they kept
the "DISCO CONQUERED THE FUTURE" imagery in the new one?

No, what I watched was the first episode of a new 13 part weekly TV series, not
the OAV series that came out a while back. You can get more info on the official

I saw the series, more than two decades ago, broadcasted on TV, never
managed to watch how it ended.

I've seen the movie and a couple of episodes of the original series. Can I
start watching this or do I need to watch the new OVA's first?

This is not the sort of series where the previous stories really matter. Just
try it and see if you enjoy it.

Considering one rather infamous still from the original, I would have
thought a more appropriate title for the topic would be:
"Cobra - A fun throwback to when Men Were Men and Women Were Bikes"

This is neat, I just recently uncovered my nearly mint copies of VIZ'
Cobra comic books from about that time. They used acid-free heavy
paper, so the art is still crisp, and looks just like my memories of
the original series.

No school like the old school.

I wonder why they recast Cobra for this? Nozawa getting too old? The
new guy is pretty good, though.
