Death Note. There's 6 volumes out in the US and there will be 6 more (the
manga is already over in Japan). It's pretty cool.

similiar to Hyper Police? Geobreeders.

Death Notes is the hottest shonen topic right now in the entire Japan
w/ the live movies release, (Nana for shoujo), I would not exactly call
it underrated.

I'm aware of this. And if we were in Japan, that would be relevant.

Really? How many people in the US know about it?

"The corpse's bitter crimson tears flow and mingle with the endless sand,
feeding the chaos within me and making me stronger."
-Gaara, _Naruto_.
My recommendation: Spiral - Suiri no Kizuna (The bonds of mystery)
No spoiler discussion.
Although Tokyo Pop seems to have run into some licensing delays, they
are supposed to release it. On the Tokyo Pop web site, somebody posted
a URL where you can preorder the first volume. It meets your criteria.
It's new and not mainstream.
If you've seen the anime, you can judge for yourself whether or not the
manga might appeal to you. If you haven't, I recommend it. It is
primarily a mystery series. Narumi Ayumu (given name Arumu) is a high
school student who solves mysteries by deciphering subtle clues. The
individual mysteries are set against the backdrop of a larger mystery
involving the disappearance of his older brother two years earlier and
the enigmatic "Blade Children." Characters are well developed, the
artwork and character designs are crisp and clean matching the
atmosphere of the series, and the story develops with an appropriate
mix of drama and lighter interludes.
Although the anime can be enjoyed on its own merit and is somewhat
self-contained, it never resolves the larger mysteries. For that you
need to read the manga. It recently wrapped up with volume 15
completing the series. There is a related series "Spiral Alive" that
started a few issues before the main series ended and is still
continuing. The end of the manga also advertises three volumes of
"Spiral - Suiri no Kizuna" novels.
I won't divulge the plot of the manga. Suffice it to say that if you
enjoyed the anime and were intrigued by the overarching story line, you
will enjoy how it is expanded and resolved in the manga.

I got to about the 3rd DVD and I can't find the energy to rent anymore...
I got tired of:

Characfter #2: "Aha! I knew you would, so I came up with a cleverer scheme

I liked Spiral (the anime) quite a bit, and I've been rewatching it since
Funimation has been showing it on Colours. The main thing I like is that all
the battles are mental battles, which is rare in anime and manga.
In terms of underrated manga, I'm currently collecting the following:
Hunter x Hunter - dammit, when will someone license the anime?
From Far Away - shoujo adventure
Hana-Kimi - shoujo school story
W Juliet - also a shoujo school story
Genshiken
Ouran High School Host Club
Samurai Deeper Kyo
The rest I'm collecting, like Bleach, don't fit the OP's question.
laurie
I really REALLY like this one. Consider that I buy almost every shoujo
manga that comes out when you read that statement. ^_^ It's one of my
ABSOLUTE favorites!
>Hana-Kimi - shoujo school story
Good, but I don't like the main character as much as Kyo from Girl Got
Game, and Girl Got Game is VERY similar, and shorter. The art is better
in GGG too (IMO). That said, I still like Hana-kimi a lot and buy it as
soon as it comes out.
>W Juliet - also a shoujo school story
I always dread starting a volume of this when it comes out but I always
absolutely LOVE it when I do read it. I don't know what's wrong with me
in regards to this title, but anyway, it is really good.
>Ouran High School Host Club
Ouran bored me during the middle of vol2 of the manga, so I stopped
buying it. I find the anime to be much better.
>Hunter x Hunter - dammit, when will someone license the anime?
>Genshiken
>Samurai Deeper Kyo
Not read/seen any of these, so no comment.
To this list I will add:
- Nodame Cantible
- The Wallflower (known as "Yamato Nadeshiko" in Japan, I believe)
Both are absolutely hilarious and have rather unique plot twists/points
for their genre (both shoujo). The Nodame "kotatsu" chapter is one of
my all-time favorites, and the Wallflower main character, Sunako, is my
absolute FAVORITE main character of any series.
Apparently my news server has dropped the rest of this thread prior to
elsie's post and one of catherine's, so I am extrapolating what the OP
wanted from what elsie had in her post that I am replying to (if anyone
understands what I mean...).

good the manga is . . .

- ReFlex76
- "Let's beat the terrorists with our most powerful weapon . . . hot

- "The difference between young and old is the difference between

- Jesus Christ - The original hippie!
Hmmmm, I like Battle Angel Alita (Gunnm in Japan), for the fun martial
arts, sci-fi, and Existentialism. The author had to wrap it up quickly
because of a near-fatal disease, so that explains why it 'ends' in
Battle Angel Alita: Angel's Ascenscion, and 'reboots' in Battle Angel
Alita- Last Order.
Don't know if Gunnm actually qualifies as underrated though, since Ping
Kuo mentions it as one of his consistent reads in rec.arts.manga...
I'd heartily recommend Naoki Urasawa's 20th Century Boys a dozen times
over, but that won't be coming out until Monster is fully released...
might still be able to grab the scanslations, though. Again, a big
favorite on rec.arts.manga, so maybe not 'underrated' as such...
Please Save My Earth might catch your fancy if you like weird shoujo
drama about Reincarnation. Or maybe not, her art was less than
fully-developed at the series beginnings...
I dunno what else to say. Maybe I'll just second Nodame Cantible, which
someone else mentioned, and leave it at that. And despite being highly
rated, One Piece is surprisingly fun and continually inventive, even
with the latest Japanese releases... :)
And you've already grabbed Nausicaa, right?

Ah, I haven't had a chance to read 7-9 yet. The to-read manga pile keeps
piling up and up and I am just not having time to keep up with
everything I buy. (that may sound ridiculous... but it's true)
Anyway, on to FFA... I really liked that they addressed her inability to
speak the language. I also find her selfless-shoujo-heroine thing to be
more believable than most others in other manga like her (and she is
*definitely* a huge stereotype).
I don't know what is different about her, but somehow I actually like
Noriko's personality instead of being mildly annoyed by it. Maybe it's
because they don't make it a minor plot thread of her trying to convince
herself to actually do something that any normal human would be able to
do, like most shoujo manga do with this type of main character. She
decides in a page or two that she wants to do something, and then she
does it with everything that she has.

Well, it's really just a personal preference. GGG's art I find to be
cleaner and more consistent. I do prefer Sano as the main male love
interest rather than Chiharu (GGG), personality-wise and appearance-wise
(even though I like Shizuru Seino's art better).
My biggest issue with Hana-Kimi is that Ashiya consistently annoys me
with her stupidity. She looks too much like a girl (art-wise), and
certainly ACTS totally like a girl in public and in private. I don't
know how she can think Sano doesn't know with all the stupid stuff she
does when she's alone with him. She is just deluding herself.
I read the manga anyway because there are a lot of thinks I do like
about it a lot, but Ashiya's refusal to awknowledge that she's
blown her cover annoys me a lot, and sometimes she makes it really
difficult for me to finish a volume without yelling at the book. ^_^;;;
Keep in mind that I'm about 4 vols behind on reading this one, vol 7 or
8 was the last one that I've read. I'm just so behind on everything...

I think it's the art that draws me in and forces me to like it. Most
stories resolve themselves satisfactorily in this series, so it's not
too bad. And I do like Itoh a lot. Sunako is still my favorite main
character (Wallflower), but Itoh is in the top three probably.
I've read too much about sissy female main characters so it's refreshing
to have someone who can body-slam people running the show for a while.

Admittedly, I stopped reading the manga after vol 2 and I also stopped
watching the anime. I am starting to think the character archetypes
interest me (the twins and their antics are amusing) but Tamaki (??) as
the main male lead is... well, there's really nothing I find appealing
about him at all so my interest in the series has dropped a lot.

I just read vol 8 yesterday and as far as I can tell it is just a
situational comedy with no over-arching plot. Like a good Game Master
(hah hah), all Hiyakawa Tomoko did was throw in a good plot hook at the
beginning to get all the main players where she wanted them to be, and
then she just throws weird situation after weird situation at them to
see what they'll do.
I can like that if the characters are really interesting and the
situations are off-the-wall, and I get that in Wallflower for the most
part (IMO, of course ^_^). I checked recently, and I think Wallflower
is still running in japan.

vol 15, released March 13, 2006
The boys' goal is so far from what Sunako is that I just don't see how
they can ever really achieve it. Sunako would cease to be Sunako if they
ever successfully turned her into a "lady". For me, what *should* be
contained in the final volume of the series is Kyohei and Sunako finally
hooking up, with Sunako retaining most of her quirkiness. At least,
that's what I feel this series has promised me as an ending so far. So
yeah, no over-arching plot. I am not sure if the OP requested that since
my server has dropped the first few posts.

I like Kyoya Otori. He's my type, and he almost seems to belong in a
different kind of story. In some other story, he'd be a young Akio Ohtori,
but he's in this kind of story so his potential for malice is blunted a bit.

I think Kyohei and Sunako will definitely hook up. She's the only one who
isn't falling all over him because of his looks, and he appreciates that,
while he's the only one who can call her on her weirdness and still like
her. The boys do seem to be bringing her out into the world a bit. The
extras no longer seem to think there's a ghost in the room. So while I don't
think she'll become a lady, I do think she'll be a bit better able to
function in society later on.

I guess you can't call in underrated but Kimagure Orange Road the manga has
certainly been overlooked. You can walk into a Borders Bookstore and find
virtually any title but KOR. When you consider that Animeigo's
distribution of the OAVs back in the early 90's was one of the early
footholds of anime in the US, you wonder why the manga has not found an
official publisher.

What about Hikaru no Go. Who would have thought that a manga about a board
game could be so dynamic? It's got great characters and plot. The
characters include young kids and elderly adults. Far from being static,
the authors bring a dynamic quality to the Go matches which are set against
a backdrop of compelling drama.
いったいどんな碁だったんだ
Ittai donna go dattan’ da
What in the world kind of Go was that
- Hikaru no Go - Akira is looking at the final layout of the game between
Shindou and Yashiro. He's talking to himself, amazed and puzzled.
DMP released 3 volumes before they decided to focus more energy on the
various Boys Love titles of their YAOI line. If sales continue we can
hope more volumes will come out.
The few stores in this area that stock it say it is a steady but slow
seller, as are many titles that have been out for more than a few months.
On the surface it is a fight manga, but not a kid's fight manga like
Dragonball.
The art is very well done, the characters have distinct personalities,
the inter-group politics is complex without being too confusing.
I've never seen the other, but I actually have a copy of
I Saw It; it was probably the first manga I owned (and
I still have it). My younger sister used it in one of her
high school classes back in the late 80s, and her teacher
borrowed it for use in her class for a few months.
The 'Eucalyptus' manga tells the story of a militaristic boy growing up
in 30s Japan whose patriotism falters when a friend's father is
tortured by the secret police; then his neighbour, a soldier, shows him
some atrocity photos from the Nanking Massacre (very brave of Nakazawa
to acknowledge that).
As for 'I Saw It', my opinion is that it manages to say just as well in
20-odd pages what took 'Barefoot Gen' at least a thousand. Longer isn't
always better -- I wish more manga-ka would realize that.

Well, my recommendation for today is Read or Die. I believe Viz Media is
putting it out in the US. Not only that, but there are more novels than
manga tankoubon. Beginning this fall, Viz is going to start putting out
the novels. This is a really unique series set in the UK with a kind of
Carmen San Diego spin.

Saishuu Heiki Kanojo, often referred to as Saikano, English title - "She,
the Ultimate Weapon". The Japanese creator came up with the English title.
It is a manga and anime series by Takahashi Shin (given name last).
The manga is quite dark. The 'she' in the title is a schoolgirl who has
been weaponized to help save Japan from a WWIII type of invasion. If you
don't like depressing stuff, don't read this because it can get quite
depressing. However, it does have some interesting, although bleak,
commentary on quite a number of topics.
By the way, its thematically relevant subtitle is the last love song.
It is realistic, it is SF, it is not mainstream, so it fits all your
criteria.
