Just saw the first 4 episodes of Gundam Wing dubbed. They were the unedited
version, either to be shown on Cartoon Networks at midnight Saturdays or to
be sold on video/DVD. First off, the dubbing is very good, definitely on par
with Totoro, Kiki, and that other well-dubbed Bandai show, Cowboy Bebop.
It's a vast improvement over the usual Toonami fare such as SM and DBZ. I
even think it's better than the PM dub, but that's just me I guess.

All character names remain unchanged, and I don't recall any
mispronounciations (bravo!). Background music is exactly the same as the BGM
from the original. OP and ED are both in Japanese. CN will probably chop
these. The dub translation is very close to the original. I did not notice
any changes. Whatever differences in the edited TV version would have to
come from cuts, instead of dialogue changes.

All the Gundam pilots have good distinctive voices, with Heero and Wu Fei's
as my favorites. Quatre actually sounds better than the original, more like
a guy. Duo starts off with a California surfer dude twang (for his first
scene only), but quickly goes into normal mode. His voice fits his
easy-going attitude. Heero is just Heero. Trowa didn't talk much, and
whatever he said sounded fine. Wu Fei _DOES NOT_ have a Chinese accent
(whew~) He sounds cool, especially during his fight with Noin in ep. 4.
Speaking of Noin, she has an awesome voice. Very pretty. Treize also has a
fine voice, aristocratic and smooth. Lady Une sounds bitchy enough from the
little bit I heard. I can't wait to hear her "nice" side. Relena is okay,
not annoying, but not great. It certainly goes with the character.

The only bad one is Zechs. Whoever voices Zechs seems to be trying for an
accent of some sort at the beginning (he's the only one trying here), then
gives up later. He also over-emphasizes every word he speaks very *slowly*.
Everyone else speaks normally. But his worst mistake is in trying to sound
evil. Zechs comes off as a small-time villain with a voice like that. It's
annoying. I wonder how the actor is going to handle the character's
"conversion" later.

In keeping with the iron rule of American dubbing, the voices match the lip
movements well. And most characters speak naturally despite this
restriction. There are a few unnatural pauses, but those only come from side
characters like random soldiers, generals, and Relena's classmates. Again,
the only main character who fails to do well is Zechs. He pauses way too
much, and speaks way too slow.

According to Bandai, all 49 TV episodes have been dubbed into English. I
would imagine once CN starts showing ep. 1 on 3/6, they won't stop until ep.
49. It should all be over in 10 weeks.

Some audience members asked the Bandai rep. if any other shows in their
catalogue are being considered for TV broadcast, and he said yes. When
asked which ones, he only smiled and said it'll be announced when the deal
is done.

I supposed that Cowboy Bebop on non-premium channel is out of the question.
It would work great on HBO or Showtimes.

Let me see, what other show they are holding are good for TV.... G Gundam is
very kid friendly, practically all of the Gundam shows in UC timeline is too
grim for American TV (except perhaps ZZ). Oh, let guess the odd "The Big O"
will show up in US TV.

Gundam X? I haven't seen it yet, but I'm a little wary since
this is a Tomino Gundam...

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned Gaogaiger...

Sometimes I forget that Gundam X was done by another person,
since it was one of the few alternate universe Gundams that had
Newtypes.

Of course. But I do want to show my appreciation of anime on TV.

So do they actually call him Trowa (two syllables) or Trois (one

That's what they call him in his "character" commercial...

Not when the name is actually written "Trowa", not "Trois"...

Exactly.. Regardles of what was intended, the character's name got written
as "Trowa", and that has become his name. It's like that scene in the
second season of ST:TNG:

Dr. Pulaski (talking to the android): "...Data.." (pronounced da-ta)
Data: "It is pronounced 'Day-ta'."
Dr. P "'Day-ta', 'Da-ta', what's the difference?
Data: "One is my name."

Do you think the main character in Shamanic Princess is named
Tiara or Tyallea? ^_^

Larry?

Whenever I see the names in English, Rally Vincent is spelled "Rally", Alice
is spelled "Alice", and Trowa is spelled "Trowa".

Except that approximately 17:25 into ADV's tape (counting preview
time) for Gunsmith Cats volume two, a printout on Rally Vincent that
Radinov is looking at has Rally's name clearly spelled as "Larry,"
contradicting other cels in the same episode.

And of course, that Pioneer's subtitled release of Lain uses "Arisu"
instead of "Alice."

Yeah, but think about it:

0 = Gundam Zero
1 = Une
2 = Duo
3 = Treize or Trowa (Trois as the japanese Kana might be translated)
4 = Quatre
5 = Sank
9 = Noin

Can't think of any others, can you?
